Because unlike a lot of shows that want to sell a message, this one was actually funny and had some quality actors. It wasn't just about the 'dynomite' stuff. And way way better than the Cosby show.
James was a great dad. Not stupid or a clown. He was a protecter of his family. He disciplined. He was honest and straight spoken but also had a tender side. He loved and cared for his family. The show never recovered once they wrote him off. Even Janet Jackson being physically abused could not save it.
It's all up to whether the businessmen who control the entertainment industries allow the artists to be independent. A great writer can submit a great script and the script can get ruined by being continually changed by other people. Sometimes what we think is a badly written show is not the writer's fault but the fault of the people who changed what he wrote.

That Brady dude seemed decent for marrying a woman with 3 kids bringing the total to 6. He somehow never even had to raise his voice to get the kids to do something. Side note, I’d never marry a woman with 3 kids.
The 70's was a great time for TV, less PC crap to sensor real issues. Good times was way ahead of the times yet still firmly rooted in the present. Great show!
Back when community knew- and were responsible for all kids. Their parents most likely went to high school together. And parents would snitch on the kids acting a fool in the street. By the time they got home, the kids were in deep trouble.
Later, maddog appears in court but itll take months before his case is heard, then his mother played by Lynn Hamilton who is another great actress, shows up and he begins behaving all cocky and showing the attitude, and she just cant take it anymore,so she slaps her son and says that she hates him and wishes he has never been born, then thats when he drops the tough act and begins to cry,and James actually felt sorry for him,and although his mother did the best she could,he had no father figure to set good examples like James had done with his children, great episode.
I’ve never seen any drama like this on a sitcom in many of my years because this was my first time watching the segment which features JJ joining a street gang because I remember his mom and dad was there during that time when he spotted JJ and they were asking questions, and that was when one of the gang members pulled out a gun and fire the shot, hitting JJ somewhere on the arm or the bodyor we could say I don’t know where he got shot at but long ago recovered because I know whoever done that may have been caught later on.
The writers from the beginning of the show's pre-production did not want a father figure in the show. Eric Monte insisted that the father stayed on the show and when Ester Rolle threatened not to do the show entirely if a husband/father was not given to her, the writers gave in and he stayed.
You know from the jump, James ain't no punk! Whether they're bluffing or not, they realize immediately James is that one! He definitely gonna out there and throw hands.🤣💪👊
