It hits you when it hits you. I found out about an ex who died years before, and I was shocked but didn't cry, figuring, ehh... he was just an ex. A few days later, it hit me while I was cooking and I broke down. The brain/heart are weird like that.
I just think that it hadn't hit her yet. But when it did, you could tell that she was hurt. Plus, she had to stay strong for the community. It would've been very difficult to celebrate the life of James if Florida was constantly crying. She had to be a strong host.
This episode taught us how grief is displayed differently. Everyone doesnt break down immediately or in front of others. I believe Florida was in shock
Wilona uncharacteristically was enabling this in denial behavior. Her role changed considerably after the Penny storyline arose and Ester took time away from the series.
I totally agree with your comment , everytime I see that episode I say to myself I'm not going to cry 😢 until it gets to the part where Florida is in the kitchen putting away everything and then it happens she finally lets it all out 😢😢😢😢😢😢
People grieve in different ways, different stages & how they want to! Never let anyone tell you how to grieve! Stop thinking screaming, falling out, & hollering is how we all should grieve!
I really hated how Thelma was on a rampage to make Florida cry. Sad thing is people do this in real life. Telling people when they can or can’t cry. Leave people alone.
I don’t think Thelma wanted to make her cry she was wondering why Florida was being festive instead of grieving. Thelma and Michael were still too young to understand how and why people felt differently from others when losing a love one. Some people put on a brave front to keep themselves from breaking down in front of others.
She wasn't at fault. To some people, it can be weird that some people don't react by crying to a passing of a loved one cause it is the usual response to it
Florida was the main reason why they were stuck in the ghetto. When James got that high paying job in Alaska Florida didn't want him to go because she said that the kids need their father. But when Florida wanted to go back to school and James said what about the kids the first thing she said that they were practically grown. She always wanted things her way and that's why they got stuck
Florida didn't want them to get stuck in the ghetto. The children didn't want to move to Alaska. Also, there wasn't anything wrong with Florida going back to school to improve herself. You got it wrong!
@GeminiladyJackson-xq6hc First of all james said He was the only one that was going to Alaska.. Not the whole family. He will go there and send money back home. Then they can probably find a house. And second of all, I'd never said that there was nothing wrong with florida going back to school. I said every time She wants to do something Then the kids are always grown.
3:44 Thelma was completely unfair. Florida only said that she doesn't need to justify to anyone how she reacts to James' death, including Thelma and Michael. She never said that Thelma and Michael were wrong about how they're reacting. Just that she mourns in her own way. She didn't say Thelma and Michael were wrong about how they reacted. The only judgey ones in this video are Thelma and Michael. Even J. J. showed an uncharacteristic maturity in accepting how Florida grieves.
He was fired for wanting to focus more on the children being positive and not stereotypical. It is sad and just shows they only wanted to show black in particularly low ways. At that point none of the writers were black.
I've seen both sides of the equation, we all grieved over a passed aunt, her daughter was probably the most composed of everyone. I was impressed and concerned all at the same time. But one thing in common we all missed her.
Florida had to deal with grief her own way. It took nearly 2 years for me to actually grieve my grandma & it took me 9 years to begin grieving my dad. People handle grief & loss differently
I know they’re kids but they need to understand that people are not the same, and they handle grief differently. All that pestering about her needing to outwardly show how she feels is only gonna lead to an emotional breakdown honestly. I’d understand if Flo was trying to pretend that James never existed and was bottling up her feelings, but her needing to emulate a certain reaction to prove she really cared about him is just ridiculous.
I have preached funerals and one preached in Washington Court House Ohio I remember when all the people were sad and I thought to myself how can I bring them some joy knowing that this one is at a much better place there in Heaven so I brought up this story and all at once instead of tears coming right down there eyes they were in joy laughing and the moral of this story is even still they were in tears for the lost that they lost right here on Earth they knew that he was in Heaven smiling
My sister is disabled and has never been able to cry unless she is in pain. But with emotional pain she can't cry. Even when we lost our mother and father she didn't cry. We knew she was suffering though.
The celebrating the life of the person rather than mourning the person at the wake in actually in many cultures around the globe. Esther Rolle was a truly talented actress. This episode showed her acting skill because she had to go from being the good hostess to finally letting herself feel the lost of James. Just because a person doesn't show it emotionally on the outside , they are crying on the inside . Be patient , their tears will surface , give it time . Been there many times , so I know .
One thing to remember is everyone mourns in their own special kind of way. My father died three years ago. My heart broke into a million pieces. I cried for my mother when she cried at the hospital. It will always hurt me and my mother and my sister. My mother doesn't hurt more or less than me just in a different way.
01:39 BULL! Surviving family members and friends do not laugh and shout happily when a family member is killed in an accident! This is terrible writing by Norman Lear and his writing team. Despite Florida's triple cursing at the end, the relatives of both parents should have been there to give heartfelt consolation to the bereaved family. This scene could have done much better. Norman Lear was quite happy to fire John Amos and it shows.
People in the comment section have no sympathy or empathy for Thelma or Michael, they're young and just lost their father and don't understand how grief works in children.

Some people grieve in different ways. This is how it was back in the day. People didn’t know how to just be them themselves. They had to be forced to do something. They didn’t want to do. So true, we all have our own way of grieving when we lose a love one.
It hits you when it hits you. I found out about an ex who died years before, and I was shocked but didn't cry, figuring, ehh... he was just an ex. A few days later, it hit me while I was cooking and I broke down. The brain/heart are weird like that.

This is so real. My family went through this. Each grieved differently, and we each caved in in our own time.

Florida had to process her grief on her own. I saw this with my mom when my grandmother passed.
