8:20 One of my favorite Tchaikovsky passages of all time ... the solo woodwinds in the recap. Magnifique! Gorgeous balance. I'd sit through the whole symphony for just that 10 seconds. This version is a little quicker tempo than I'm used to though.

3:05? 3:08 is pretty cool. That is the leaping-frogging scales effect. He used a similar effect at the end of the Nutcracker March.

A Russian orchestra so should be the real thing .! Too much footage of the conductor though. My favourite lump of music, good old Tchaik

Especially that pathetic-sounding clarinet 2 line at 8:29. Do do .. do do do do do. While clarinet 1 prepares to do the harmonic minor scales. I transcribed the piece onto MIDI back in 2003.

How about 3:47 in this gimmicky tapestry of a symphony? Where all four string sections play the same pitch and then spread out into multiple notes? I think its kind of a fail. Kind of anathema to the rules of counterpoint.

I like it this way. Have heard it more slowly and didn't feel what I think is a true Russian voice.

Hmm, I see what you mean. Bernstein likes exaggerating his signs. I'm not faulting him, but, as you (probably) know, a conductor is a leader of an orchestra and needs to get the entire orchestra organised. Although jumping up and down is an (um...) *interesting* way of doing it, as long as the orchestra knows what he is trying to do, he is golden.

@@lilyevans7959 Yes. I played violin in an orchestra. A conductor is primarily a communicator.
