Cushing's syndrome/disease both occur due to the high levels of cortisol in the body. Cortisol is created by the adrenal glands, and it is a stress hormone that helps the body work through stressful situations.
Cushing's syndrome generally occurs due to excessive cortisol from tumors or issues with adrenal glands, or from chronic corticosteroid use.
Cushing's disease generally occurs due to a tumor in the pituitary gland causing excessive release of ACTH.
Cuhsing's symptoms can be thinning of the skin, truncal obesity, reproductive issues, elevated blood pressure, striae on abdomen back, and excessive body hair.

If I may add, "long time on corticosteroids" can be hours to days if the patient is either terminally ill or has a rapid disease process in place. As a hospice nurse, I've learned to always evaluate for Cushing-like syndrome for any of my patients who started a steroid, even at a low dose.
Thank you so much for the explanation.
So, I'm a daily corticosteroid user (asthma), is there a concern in my case? Correlation is not necessarily causation here, right? Or should I try to limit my use?
Thanks for the great content, u helped me pass my NCLEX in 2022
Does this kind of mimic diabetes behavior of the high glucose and sodium factor?
