Great lesson! Classroom learning is good, but it's important to learn how to actually use a language as opposed to just reciting what we've studied. Your examples make it easier to understand the degrees of intensity so learners like myself can be more specific and less repetitive. 新年快乐!
6:58-7:13 speaks to me on a spiritual level. I can't tell you how many times I've said like...2 words in Chinese, and either my students, co-workers, or local just LOSE their minds! I've been told it's just the general expectation that Mandarin Chinese is a less globally spoken language, so when a foreigner can speak even a little, it's really impressive to hear. That said, your American self perfectly sums up what I'm thinking in those situations.

If they say your chinese is really good, it actually has the opposite. It means your chinese sounds very foreign but we don’t want to tell you to your face that your mandarin isn’t that good, so I’ll just say “it’s really good”
@@jordandavis6709 I’m fully aware of this too. But that doesn’t really make it polite, and it feels really disingenuous to me. Personally, I’m not fishing for compliments when I try to communicate in Mandarin. I’m trying to ease the burden of language, and to develop as an individual. Honestly, much better to say nothing at all and just talk with me than to pay a compliment where it isn’t even due.
@@GregBackwards It’s also cultural as well. To then if they were to be so direct, it might be considered ignorant or they might loose face as well. If you’re closer friends it’s not that bad.

Thanks for the video! I tried to tell multiple people happy lunar new year today who are chinese. I was basically ignored and one of them even said I should stop trying to learn chinese because I'm not chinese. Do chinese people want non-chinese people to not learn their language? I felt really sad about what happened today. Kind of made me feel like I'm not supposed to celebrate the holiday or learn the language.

You have to understand mandarin is just a dialect of many other chinese languages. The Chinese you encountered prolly are those who speak other brand of Chinese languages like Cantonese or Hokkien. They tend to have superiority complex degrading those who speak Mandarin. I'm assuming you're from the states.

your explanation of you3 xie1 makes me think of the subtle difference between 'some' and 'somewhat'. 'some' is like, middle, medium but 'somewhat' adds a slight degree of doubt, a little bit less than some.

Here is the video I neeed
Can you do a video of vocabulary used in crime shows or would be in a crime book? I'm studying Mandarin and would like to write and read Chinese mysteries. But the videos do not have vocabulary for occupations or places.
Can you also say 多麼/那麼 for “a lot” ? Like the song tittle “你那麼愛他” ?
