For a man to be masculine, he needs to be potentially dangerous. He is capable of being dangerous and is in complete control of his emotions. He becomes dangerous when it's necessary to protect and defend himself and those he cares for. He also does not need the permission or the approval of women or other men to be masculine.

Fighting will involve all kinds of toxic behaviors in their disposal, not just physical. They might use their narcissism, wit, money, power, influence etc. It's a destructive path.

As a woman whose husband has abandoned the family, traditional masculinity is totally required. I have to be the stoic who puts her feelings and fears on the shelf for my children. I have to be ready to get my elbows out professionally or maybe even socially. Is it going to hurt me? Probably. It'll be worth it for those who depend on me. Knowing that I have done my duty will be enough.

One of the things I love about having grown up as a wrestler and coach is the sport teaches you how to channel your aggressions while keeping you under the auspices of older virtuous adults who have paid the price and understand what how to channel male aggression into hard work, goal setting and achievement. As well, there is always someone better than you - and you are going to meet them - and they will humble you. The wrestling community, while highly competitive and gritty, honors humility and graciousness whether winning or losing. I have known many national and world class wrestlers. Almost all of them are humble, understated individuals off the mat. They have learned to keep their "fire in the belly" under control, but man-o-man, if I were ever in a foxhole, they would be the ones I'd like to have next to me.

The first few guys on campus are clearly flummoxed, stressed, and uncomfortable (watch their body language). When asked for the definition, they have to answer using other vague, undefined descriptors. The most succinct, honest response was by the black guy at 1:22 - "There isn't any logic to it..." "TM" is among the wide pantheon of brilliant, genius woke phrases that manipulate people's feelings against a particular sub-group without having to justify itself.

    I resemble those remarks! ...
But seriously, nice work! Delighted to find your cogent voice regarding our human shenanigans. As a seemingly lifelong agnostic, I at least try to remain circumspect about contests (in this case perhaps) boiled down to "I'M not the more toxic person! THEY'RE the more toxic person!".
As such, I'd feel remiss to not express a sort of gut reaction to what it unfortunately sounds like you've had a ringside seat. In essence, I'd hope the superseding toxicity of exterminating innocent people is given its proper position among the dialectic and questioning of what is "pono" (correct, righteous) and what is our "kuleana" (relational responsibility) in the revelation of this wisdom. Looking forward to more listening of your refreshingly erudite rap.
    Keep up the good work,
    Darren

Sorry lady. But I don't like this masculinity because it forces us to be a certain way and all that, I'm a feminine man, I have no interests in traditionally masculine things like fishing, hunting or sports. I'm not comforming to those norms. Protecting people was never my forte, what annnoys me that only men have to be protectors, society doesn't seem to understand that there are a lot of masculine women capable of fighting and yet it is still our job to protect people, duck that. As a feminine man I always liked barbie dolls and cute things. Maybe that's a good thing, that I grew up without a father. I don't like this alpha beta and sigma male stuff, that men have to be alpha or sigma, it's just stupid. Basically there are a few thing I agree with, and some things I don't agree with things , like porn thing, it doesn't work that much on me because i just watch one video after like 4 minutes i'm done that's enough for me and I understand that those videos are just videos and not real. Also I'm asexual, so it's impossible for me to become a porn addict, or have interest in sex with women, since I'm still attracted to women.

Is the soldier who bombs nations he cannot spell... a warrior (ty for ir service?). Or a barbarian? What about a Russian or Iranian or Israeli or Palestinian soldier?
So then context matters and is subjective opinion.
So then is Hannibal a warrior or a barbarian? And Ceasar? What about Benedict Arnold and George Washington? To the victor goes the spoils.
Relevantly, the dominant force then is framed paychologically as the good and righteous warrior.
Revolting slaves too are criminals, property, or barbaric... unless they win.
Is the barbarian the cynical anti-war slacker? Or the one getting paid to kill? Does it matter which war? At first it may seem a just war, so then they are warriors but when leaks reveal manipulations and lies, then the soldier is a barbarian?
We see that these terms are metaphorical and contextual and subjective.
Who is the antisocial one- the investor with sophistication who corners a real estate market? Or the bs who pee behind it? Who is parasitic.
We see that "might makes right," or alternatively, that weakness is evil. This is human subjectivity. So power defines success defines morality.
The poor die in gulags and ghettos, often after working harder than anyone else with nothing to show and are popularly regarded as parasitic.

Is spelling a litmis test for war? A soldier is one who follows orders regardless of ability to write in cryllic or glyphs. Barbarians are war mongers. Soldiers can be barbarians and the structure is expected to remove them to preserve the virtue of the whole. War will never be beautiful or perfect, nor will the men tasked with executing it. PTSD is a byproduct of that. Virtuous men tasked with breaking the cardinal structure of society.

Roni - In your section on The Barbarian archetype...
First, I agree with a lot of your points, and conclusions... and in the case of some people, your asserted cause... but there are some differences.
"On the receiving end of abuse growing up..." YES, agree... but very often, that abuse growing up, was FROM THE MOTHER... which explains why, often-but-not-always, his victims are female. "The Barbarians" tend to make up a huge percentage of the prison pop., and most of the prison pop were raised by single mothers... which also ties in with your comment concerning the Barbarian's lack of an honorable male rolemodel... which should have been provided by his father.

I recently started my little one in a martial arts class and love the way those tutors engage the children. I was concerned initially my little shy lad might not get involved. Anyway reflecting on myself I think me trying to control can be destructive and always has resulted in negative consequences. I fear I am losing control even with my little one on computer games. I struggle to maintain that control and I think computer games are a curse for young boys. I believe a good male archetype is being a good father.

There is no such thing as toxic masculinity. Men cannot be virtuous unless they are a dangerous monster in some way. The key is the monster must be under complete control at all times, and cannot be ruled by emotion except in extreme situations where it aids victory. Defeat and failure are much more likely outcomes than victory for the average man.

just kidding. Very nice to see some proper defining of this rather nebulous term. Just very bad history. For example, the Visigoths invaded Rome during the Migration Period to protect the future of their own tribe after they were pushed out from their homeland by changing weather patterns and the nomadic domino effect. They tried to negotiate with Rome but Rome being Romans treated them with racism and xenophobia until things went out of control.

@AmeliaHouck-o9j i think there is value in being able to access these dark archetypes when one must confront them. One of the most manly things one can do is have the most dark capabilities with perfect control over them. If someone tries to harm my wife and children and I can't kill them with my bare hands what good am I as a man?

  • @jami1974

This is spot on! Boy scouts, military training, sports groups, gaming comnunities etc channel the male energy and teaches the boys the rules of the group - in good or bad. Women cannot guide boys in this and hard for them to raise good men.

As I see it, it’s two barbarians fighting it out with one side have better weapons.

    Thoughts?

I’m sorry however a lot of this is negating the reasoning behind it.
The Barbarian and Tyrant is looking at the results of actions taken not the reasons behind them also dismissing who is declaring them as such. Ghangis Khan and his Kin like Atila whose actions may appear to us now as excessive however look at what the groups they conquered had to say about how life for them improved in some aspects. This is known fact by not only the groups they ruled over as well as their adversaries like the Chinese and Western Christianity.
My point is simple if you are going to look at these masculine traits from a moral high ground you cannot cherry pick what pushes a singular narrative. You have to look at it from both sides the causes and effects.
Any trait be it masculine or feminine can be toxic when taken to the extreme that is what needs to be understood.

So, you may want to clarify the Joker analogy in the future, not every Joker portrayal is the same as Heath Ledger's (Agent of Chaos), Cesar Romero (Trickster) & Jack Nicholson (Mobster), even the comic books have these different tropes & one of the editors discussed it in an interview roughly 10 years ago.

No..... there's no such thing as toxic masculinity. There are toxic men. What you're trying to do is project. It's not about toxic masculinity its....... guys are doing things and behaving in ways we don't like, because it doesn't serve us. How do we stop it and bring them to heel? The answer is....... you don't. Don't shit on the people who make your soft easy boss babe existence possible.

Shadow work can be effective for raising awareness of masculine and feminine traits within ourselves. Men may be influenced by unconscious toxic (and positive!) feminine traits that propagate from our "anima" while the converse is also common for women via their "animus". Each of us are whole and the truths we seek are most commonly found by opening our hearts with childlike curiosity to all aspects and potentials of the one we know best: ourselves. Archetypes are a wonderful inspiration for building these "relationships". Go with courage, you are safe and you are loved.
