  • Today I'm in Niles Il, about to walk into an OfficeMax I hadn't been inside the store for over 25 years!
Just some brief history: OfficeMax, founded in 1988, was once the third-largest office supplies retailer in the United States. In 2013, it merged with Office Depot, transforming into a brand and subsidiary of Office Depot. This merger made it the largest U.S. office supplies chain, although it faced legal challenges along the way.
On November 5, 2013, the merger was finalized, and the global headquarters was moved to Boca Raton, Florida, resulting in the closure of OfficeMax’s headquarters in Naperville, Illinois. Since then, the two chains have integrated, with some stores retaining the OfficeMax name, while others have been rebranded as Office Depot.
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the demand for office supplies as many people shifted to working from home. This change reduced the need for traditional office supplies, putting additional strain on retailers like OfficeMax. Despite these challenges and several store closures over the years, OfficeMax continues to defy the odds.
Recently, Office Depot partnered with Dormify to provide college students with an expanded collection of dorm and school supplies. This new partnership aims to set students up for a successful school year with stylish furniture and dorm essentials available both online and in 200 stores.
Will these efforts be enough to ensure their survival in a rapidly changing market? Let's dive in and explore more about OfficeMax's journey, its current state, and its plans for the future.
