Today, I'm at Barnes & Noble in Skokie, IL, stepping inside for the first time in over 25 years! In the age of the internet, I rarely buy physical books anymore, so I'm amazed this bookstore has stood the test of time. Join me as I explore this iconic store.
A Brief History of Barnes & Noble:
1873: Charles M. Barnes starts a book business from his home in Wheaton, Illinois.
1917: His son, William, partners with G. Clifford Noble to establish Barnes & Noble in New York.
1930s: The flagship store opens on Fifth Avenue, NYC, gaining a global reputation.
1971: Leonard Riggio acquires the company, expanding it into the "World’s Largest Bookstore."
1980s: Barnes & Noble grows through acquisitions, including B. Dalton Bookseller.
1990s: Introduction of the “superstore” concept, revolutionizing bookselling with vast inventories and a welcoming atmosphere.
