A Brief History of Barnes & Noble:
1873: Charles M. Barnes starts a book business from his home in Wheaton, Illinois.
1917: His son, William, partners with G. Clifford Noble to establish Barnes & Noble in New York.
1930s: The flagship store opens on Fifth Avenue, NYC, gaining a global reputation.
1971: Leonard Riggio acquires the company, expanding it into the "World’s Largest Bookstore."
1980s: Barnes & Noble grows through acquisitions, including B. Dalton Bookseller.
1990s: Introduction of the “superstore” concept, revolutionizing bookselling with vast inventories and a welcoming atmosphere.
1993: Barnes & Noble goes public, launching its e-commerce site, BN.com, in 1997.
2009: Enters the eBook market with the NOOK® brand of e-Reading products.
