Okay, first of all Wendy your so pretty! But any viewers need to know just a few things about this video! For one, all of these products can be purchased at Sally Beauty Supply (in case you were wondering). I am also a professional. If I were Wendy I would have re lightened my roots after the first application (not gone straight to toning), maybe for 20/30 mins as long as your scalp can take it. This would have lifted the hair to a pale yellow (which would have been perfect for toning). I also would have used the Color Charm developer for the toner, not 30 volume. The Color Charm toner's developer has very low ammonia, and prbly would have toned her roots a lot better after the first application to begin with!! If lightening the hair twice, then toning. The toner might have come out ashy/purple at first. But quickly fades after a few washes. And one last thing, try not comb color/toner/lightner through your hair at all. This is what will break your hair. Just use your finger tips to rub the color onto your roots and scalp if you have to! Hope this helps!!!

Hey! I am a hairstylist and salon owner- If you simply try your best to not overlap the bleach onto the previously dyed hair and use a 40 v instead of 30, and put the toner on the roots only (like you did the bleach) you will get a PERFECT result! :) Great vid though

I Work at a salon and am always washing up colours bowls and what not and this looks pretty accurate. This is great for in between trips to the salon but ideally you should see a professional about your hair as different people need different percentages (or volumes) in their hair. Another thing is if it is the first time lighting/ lifting your hair you are bound to feel a tingle or itch/ uncomfortable feel on your scalp. You shouldn't leave this too long but the longer you leave it the blonder you will be and the better your hair will lift! Use a purple toner afterwards so your hair doesn't to a horrible yellow colour and continue to use violet or special blonde shampoos! Great video, well done!!

I am a cosmetologist, if it is new growth 90 % of the time you could use the lightest blonde with the color line your using and since its new growth ( virgin hair) with 20 volume it will turn blonde and be less harsh on your hair

You should actually stop before the already blonde hair starts to prevent overlapping which will cause breakage and a line or demarcation. You can bring you toner through all of the hair so you can blend it into one colour. If you doing a half inch or less of regrowthh you should actually stop a little bit before the blonde stuff starts because the heat from your scalp with help develop and expand the bleach so it ends up reaching to the end of the roots. If you only have a half inch or less and you go right to the end of the roots, the bleach will expand and cause overlapping. Which you do not want to do. And trust me I used to do the same all the time but I'm in cosmetology school so I learned not to do that anymore. Wish I knew before because it would have saved me a lot of damage on my hair.

I have been lightening my own hair for years now. My mom was a beautician and taught me allot about hair. I very much agree with the last few comments. 30 volume is way to strong. I have dark brown hair and I go almost white. I use 20 volume and I always double bleach back to back the same day. I wait til the next day then use my toner. I use 10 volume in my toner. You run way less risk of purple hair and can leave it on longer.
My biggest concern is I feel you used way to much developer for your mix. Once again thats 30 volume and way to much of it. It's never supposed to be that runny. I just feel that anyone making a tutorial should be measuring as per instructions. I use Quick Blue High Performance. It lifts up to 7 levels and it mixes 2 - 2.5 ounces developer per scoop of powder.
I don't mean to sound like a ass but this kind of video can cause someone some grief.

Toner will not make your hair purple. If you had left it in longer you would've had blonde not yellow hair. The purple neutralizes the yellow. They're complimentary colors so putting purple on yellow neutralizes it. Just for future reference.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a hair stylist I've done this obviously before I went to hair school. Doesn't mean I would recommend it. To the person that comment saying to a stylist "why don't you upload a video your you touching up your own roots" why do you think we as a stylist would do it ourselves when we've clearly stated on here that you should see a professional?
What people don't realize is that just because a stylist went to "hair school" does not mean it's easy! Yeah we've all probably messed up hair you'll never find a stylist that hasn't it's called learning by trial and error! Reasons why I wouldn't condone RUclips videos like this is because some people have different reactions to these chemicals. You can't always put 30 volume on your scalp with lightener and you most definitely shouldn't use 30 volume developer with a toner considering the cuticle of the hair is already blown out due to the lightening process prior to. So when you go to tone the hair with 30volume developer it can only blow the cuticle of the hair open anymore and even cause breakage. Not to mention that some people can get a chemical burn. Just be aware that you're actually working with chemicals here. Just because it says "sensitive scalp" does not mean that it won't cause little to severe damage.
And overall don't sit here on these posts and bash a stylist because they're telling you you're doing it wrong. Hair color formulation involves science and math! If you don't know what chemicals you're using and you aren't using the correct percentage of that chemical as a stylist we could cause harm to someone. I can't speak for every stylist put there because some might just be lazy or don't have enough education but it is wrong for people to sit here and bash someone's profession when all they want to do is help prevent people from possibly physically hurting themselves (or others) and to help prevent them from possibly breaking their hair off. Before doing something like this educate yourself first is all I can say. You don't know how your hair or body would react.

Usually you would use the lowest vol with a toner. And you really don't want to comb it thru when your just touching up roots. That's why the rest turned purple while the roots still look yellow

i agree i think you should've used a diff toner i always use a 9A-9.1 n its a very light ash blond that way it wont make your hair purple like it did. the gray will only take off redish tones. n use a 20min developer.

You probably needed a 20 or even 10 volume developer to tone. The exact same thing happened to me. I had yellow roots, and the wella t18 kinda fixed it, but I used a 20 volume. I needed a 10 since my hair is more resistant to toners. Let us know if you fixed it and how.

i used to ammonia free bleach by ion & then i didn't go far down enough when i wuz touchin the roots up in the front cuz i wanted to avoid overlapping & i got brown lines here & there from where my natural hair ended.. oh god, it was terrible. But, thank god for that wella t18 toner. I found it 10x easier to apply the toner with bowl & brush to avoid my already blonde lengths... i was able to leave it in for more than 20 minutes & got a really beautiful pale, pearly shade of blonde... all i kept

you should try roux violites hair bleach, i found it to be less damaging for me since i took my jet black hair to white and it was still manageable and not completely fried and since its a violet it will reduce the yellow/orangy/brassy color and shouldn't need a toner with it.

Thank you for doing a tutorial on this! I'm a newly bleached blonde and the most part I'm worried about is having to do my root touch up.. do you normally start on the top of the head or on the back? and I thought you have to use 20 developer with the powder? And do you have to use the same toner when you do root touch up? I used the T10 Wella Colorcharm when I bleached my hair.. didn't know if you had to use the same ones or not...

Weird, Guy Tang swears by Olaplex. It's not a cheap product so it's not something that people who don't bleach their hair on a regular would need (probably why some people resell it). Also, if you don't know how to use it correctly, it's not going to work properly (again, probably another reason it gets resold).

I've also been debating on whether i should kick my developer up a notch to 40 instead of 30 ... everytime 30 is used & left on for the maximum time, i NEVER get the right shade i want... i think that extra peroxide will help lift it all the way. I've looked around youtube & people who use that volume always come out with the right shade. & plus i look at it as, either way there is gunna be some damage. I'd rather get the right color the 1st time then have to go over it again from using a 30

Your hair would be even prettier if you follow these steps...To save breakage, try not to over lap the lightener on to the dark parts because it does cause breakage, especially the "baby hairs" around your hairline. When you apply the purple toner, only place it on the brassy parts (like your roots) because by placing the purple toner where it is not needed (on the pale blonde), it turns purple. Other than that, your hair looks pretty. I hope you don't mind me saying...

You will find that hair is nearly the same as copper wire its externally tough and its actually very hard to make your hair fall out with chemicals the only way it could is if you mixed a dye or bleach real badly and completely wrong or left in on way passed the time they have told you on the packet/bottle. i have belached my hair that meny times and dyed over my hair over 10 times in a month when i was younger to fix what i had done to it my hair never fall out ever.

Well hell I hope you're right, but I went to a professional hair salon and they said they had to do it little by little, in other words in a process instead of dying the whole thing which is what I wanted, But you might have stronger hair versus mine. Some people are blessed with strong hair and can do what ever they want. My friend bleaches her hair like no tomorrow(by herself) and it looks the same. mine dries up from just highlights. it sucks :/

40 vol is really risky to use i never go that far as once its been bleached with it you cant do it again so it has to be done right first time or your hair feels terrible ans brittle but even if you damage it it will heal over time naturally anyway but however did know a girl who bleached her hair and then washed it out with hot water she would use for a shower her hair did snap off in some parts.

Did anybody else notice she didn't measure the developer when mixing up the bleach? You cant just "eyeball" when working with chemicals. Too little or too much can cause the bleach to not work properly.

Are you responding to my comment or the video? I'm a licensed cosmetologist. I know what happens when chemicals aren't mixed properly.

Excellent video for an amateur. But I would say leave the lightener to the professionals. RUclips bleach gone wrong & you'll see why. I'm sure the owner of Wella does not condone their professional product being used by non-professionals. Where are non-pros buying this stuff anyway???

Sally's Beauty Salon is where I go and I'm sure many others from here as well. Also I'm sure you can purchase online too...maybe Amazon? It is much better than drugstore box hair products... Also I don't think she is speaking for Wella, she is just showing the products that she uses. All videos are really for you to do at your own risk. This particular way this lady does her hair in the video, it works for her..may not work for everyone, it does work for mine as well...good luck everyone...Do it at your own Risk.

If they didnt want it used by non proffessionals, then why do they sell it in Sallys where it is open to the public? Seriously be smart.

Sally's is fine. I buy lots of things there and end up with great results.
My best friend is a certified beautician. She says sally's is salon grade, but not to the level of state. It is open to the public who has experience and no how of what they are doing.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to bleach your roots. I haven't been to cosmetology school and I've been bleaching my hair for years. I have no breakage and hair half way down my back. Trust me if you do it right and carefully you'll be fine. You can get everything at Sally's...I thought everyone knew that.

Everyone doesn't know that and think if your not a "professional" your an amateur. The best way to learn is from experience. Trial and error. Iv been bleaching hair for almost a year now and i have split ends but no major damage. I noticed my hair is a lot better since i started using WEN too, i do notice a different with the right shampoo. Like bleaching your hair is of course going to do some damage, its bleaching. Whether you are a professional or not its still bleaching your hair. But doing it correctly is what makes your hair still manageable. I noticed some brands of lighteners work better than others. Quick white doesnt fry my hair as much as the brand in the purple package at sallys. It didnt lift real well and it actually fried a piece of my hair off. Which rarely happens. I rarely had to bleach my roots twice, with that brand i did. It depends on what lightener, what developer you use. The safe route is to use 20 or30 NEVER 40 or 50. If you want to be super super careful use 10 volume and leave it on for a long time and keep bleaching until the desired lift, because 10 volume is very weak and gradual.

I love how everyone is like your hair isn't even blonde. When you bleach your hair it is tones of yellows and whites. The white blonde is usually achieved by purple dye and a ton of conditioner. Her hair looks amazing
