      It is easy to take sections when you have long hair. But what if you have a pixie cut? I find it hard to do the roots with my pixie cut and I went to hairdressers who overlapped a lot because of my short hair so I am doing it at home.but it is impossible for me to section it as it is 3cm long only.

    Coconut oil has a low Molecular weight, thus allowing it to penetrate the hair shaft. This helps the hair maintain protein that would be otherwise lost in the hair when bleaching. With more protein surviving after the chemical process, The hair shaft does not expand and contract since it is full; meaning there is less chance of breakage and only the pigment had been bleached. Using an 100% organic coconut oil is best, since it is organic; like ur hair, the bleach will penetrate it, but at a slower pace. If your are not fast or a professional, this trick she is showing you allows you to take your time and get a consistent/safe result. ALTHOUGH, application of the coconut oil should be applied 30mins before you bleach (minimum, I prefer 2 hrs and using a volume 30 for black to blond). This is the best video I have see on how to safely DIY bleach your hair, Bravo !

      This might sound like a dumb question... If you were to bleach all of your hair, would u just apply it normally to then ends or would you do the ends and roots at separate times? I assume once you do the roots you do the ends as well but I just want to double check... Im going coral pink here in a few weeks and I am a little nervous to be doing it all myself... :p

    I’m a licensed cosmetologist and honestly I have almost no complaints for this video..Almost. If you’re bleaching at home, or using any sort of chemical- you need to wear gloves. Chemical burns aren’t pretty, people tend to forget to think of bleach as the chemical that it is and it can do SERIOUS damage.

      I completely agree with this but this makes me wonder, how can it then be safe to apply to the scalp, and even worse, twice? I have done this before and had blisters on my scalp (both when I did it at home and when I went to several different professionals), which is why I choose not to be blonde anymore.

    • @samvernon7909
      @samvernon7909 6 лет назад +92

      Gwen Tegels there are special formulations of bleach that is specifically for on the scalp application, but me personally -in order to get the proper lift- I use foils between the hair itself and the scalp. You get maximum lift, because of the heat produced from the scalp incubating into the foil and you’re protecting your skin ❤️ very good question

      @grahamulax 5 лет назад +48

      @@samvernon7909 Is that why she put oil in her hair and scalp so it would add a layer of protection? Currently in phase 1 of this video :)

    • @samvernon7909

      GrahamQuest in some ways yes and in others no. The oil actually coats the hair, protecting it from some damage but it also keeps the bleach from penetrating the hair strand itself. If you’re using bleach at home I would advise to use an oil barrier as a bit of a safety net. But coming from a professional, it’s always better (in my opinion) to go to a salon or to a local stylist to get your hair done, yes it will be more expensive but you have better chances of your hair being less damaged, of it turning out the way you want it to and of protecting yourself from chemical burns/rashes ❤️ I wish you luck!!!

    Just want you to know that because of your video, I've been bleaching my hair to a white platinum for over a year using your method! Only thing I changed was that I start with a 20 vol then I gradually go into a 30 (because my hair is darker than yours). I also switched the coconut oil with a redken extreme hair mask just because the oil made the bleaching a bit blotchy but the hair mask protects really well. Thanks for making this very easy to follow. People ask me all the time where I get my hair done and I love being able to say I do it myself!

      Sandwoman the higher the volume number, the faster it processes. 30 is a bit harder to control than 20 so it can damage your hair more if you accidentally overprocess.
      I personally do my bleachings a day a part which isn’t recommended by stylists. Just be careful, use hair mask treatments before bleachings and start with a 20 to see how your hair and scalp react

      Hmmmm strange because iv always started at the top/ front with every colour wether it's foiling or full head or root regrowth because it's colder on the top of your head than underneath so takes that tad longer to process than underneath because of warmth of your neck and hair it's in a confined space so generates heat more quickly so by time you get to the nape the overall colour will be processing evenly rather than underneath being over processed and causing breakage 😣 I see that a hell of alot in the whole 15 years of my hairdressing career . Just my opinion love and sharing it from years of experience I'm most definitely not trying to pull you down on your comment just my opinion ❤

    • @TwoBs

      Same. I ruined my hair in high school with my dumbassery, going as far as bleaching up to 3-4 times in 2 days using 30vol and 40vol. Never again. Took my long hair 2 1/2 years with constant trimmings to get it all back to 100% virgin hair.
      Another trick for the scalp if you itch during the processing is to add two packs of Sweet N' Low sugar (the little pink packs) with your bleaching powder before mixing it up with the developer. It helps a lot.
      Nowadays, I have a short disconnected pixie cut, so I can play with colors more often (I'm at a white color right now with silver hues). With bleaching, though, the dirtier the hair ... the better it will do so I can go up to 4 days without washing without it being noticeable. By the 3rd day, I apply coconut oil really lightly to my roots. If I am not going anywhere that day, I apply it early in the morning and sleep in it later that night while it's wrapped. Then the next day I will slather it all in coconut oil an hour before bleaching, and my hair turns out fine.
      I'm not really a fan of double processing at home in one day as shown in this video, though, as once is damaging enough as it is no matter how much Olaplex and coconut oil one uses, so I'd suggest finding a good bleach that can lift 7-9 levels in one go (my favorite is the Schwarzkopf Blondme line which hasn't failed me yet), because when you tone afterwards, most toners that require developer will add more damage (why I favor toners that use 7vol)....so the less bleaching is better if you plan to tone, or at least use the soap cap/bleach bath method if you HAVE to lighten your hair a bit more a couple days after the first bleaching.

    This is the video I go to over and over again to remind myself how to do this. Not only that, it’s the BEST video I have yet to find with product, technique, clarity, and true life results that I have found in years and so many, many hours of searching for answers.
    I dont make enough to get professionals to do what I want, and I am capable of doing it myself. $30 of product, my own time and ability, and I can finally achieve the look I want for myself. I do the steps, I trust the process, and I get a beautiful pale hair color that is perfect for applying fun colors that pop.
    If adding colors on top of the bleached/toned white-ish color, add a splash or more of white conditioner to the color of your choice to create more product and lighten the hue. Great for getting pastel colors by tweaking the ratio of conditioner to dye color (increase conditioner amount to dye color amount).
    I’ve never gotten the at home results of vibrant and clear color until I preceded the process with the directions of this video. I have hair so dark it’s mistaken for black, but it’s just an intensely dark brown - and this works wonders!
    Thank you for this tutorial! You’ve saved me SO much money and headache!

      steph I think her hair is just naturally thin, and the coconut oil helps prevent some of the damage. Obviously if you bleach your hair often, it's not healthy. But cutting off the dead ends and using coconut oil helps it to /look/ okay

    Hey! Thanks for this tutorial I followed it to the T and my hair came out PERFECT BEAUTIFUL platinum! I just wanted to add to your info. After I toned my hair with the t18 wella color charm and went to wash it out I used a dime size amount of Fanola no orange shampoo. Its blue pigmented so while the wellas purple color cancels the yellow the blue pigment in the shampoo cancelled out any remaining orange. Thank you so much!

      I know! I've been to at least 5 different high end salons in Nashville, and not 1 could achieve the platinum icy white hair color I wanted. Some weren't even willing to try because they didn't want to bleach anyone's hair. Really...that's your job! If you don't know how to use bleach safely, find another profession. I ended up having to teach myself, which took a lot of trial and error, but I did it, and it is perfect. I was utterly shocked when I started this process that I couldn't find a salon in Nashville (hello!!! Music capital of the world) that had a professional colorist who could achieve this color. I want hologram hair now, but I'll have to fly to NY or LA to get that done. They obviously can't even use bleach here!

    What I'm seeing throughout the comments and the video:
    1. Coconut oil: It is similar to Olaplex so do use it, BUT you should apply it overnight so it would be absorbed better without blocking the lightening.
    2. Two sessions: It's healthy to have multiple sessions, but with this brand and her roots, she could've done one session. But it was easier to do two to get it even (though, again, possible with one).
    3. Lightness of hair: This is a tutorial HOWEVER, she does have about a level 7 hair which is not everyone so take caution doing this.
    4. Gloves: USE GLOVES even when mixing and not applying
    5. Consistency: Use ratios and measure things instead of "pudding" or "jello" because you're bleaching hair. Unless you don't mind going bald, be precise for your own sake.

    So it seems like she has already bleached most of her hair and is just touching up her roots. For anyone who wants to bleach all of their hair, bleach your hair accept your roots and move up to your roots. The closer your hair is to your scalp the warmer your hair is which makes the bleach process faster. This is so that when you dye your hair it looks more "natural" because roots are usually darker than the rest of your hair. Just a little tip ;)

  • @amiemariecreative163
    @amiemariecreative163 6 лет назад +16

    For people with sensitive skin, or weaker hair I highly suggest you don't bleach your hair twice so close together. If it's your first time doing it yourself do it once for 30 minutes max I would say, then see what you're hair is like over the next couple shampoos. Get to know what works for your hair.
    When I started dying my hair at home I did almost this exact process except without the coconut oil. My skin is sensitive and reacted badly to the toner after already having been sensitized from being exposed to bleach. (This did happen when I went to the salon as well) However when I did it at home it really didn't do anything because my hair wasn't lightened enough. I decided to never do toner again and I just do color now.
    At one point I lifted my hair to a very very light blond and "toned" it using a mixture of mostly white conditioner and a dime sized dab of purple demi-permanent dye from n'rage for 5 minutes. It came out a silver violet. Then I used a light purple conditioner to maintain for a few weeks until I wanted to do a different color.
    Also I use a cream bleach from Ion designed to go on the scalp and that's conditioning (as much as bleach can be I guess lol). The powder stuff scares me since I can't measure it properly and especially because of my sensitive skin. Never had a problem with the cream bleach.

      @amiemariecreative163 3 года назад

      @@Flirkinn heck yeah! You're welcome! Its a great, non damaging way to tone a light blond.
      Not sure where you live, but where I am (Alberta, Canada) the purple from N'Rage is discontinued. But I can find it online still. It's the best purple I have found for pigmentation and longevity. Most others seem to suck. If anyone sees this and has another brand of purple suggestion that would be cool.
      That being said, using the process of white conditioner with a small amount of purple to "pastelize" it should still work with other dark purples that are semi or preferably demi-permanent colors.

      It's not the product's fault your undertone is yellow, most people will lift to either a yellow-based level 8 or a brassy-based level 7. If you did it yourself, you probably used the wrong toner. If you want white and your undertone is yellow, you use a purple toner, if you want white and your undertone is brassy or orangey, you use a blue toner. plus, never go over pre-lightened hair, as you can cause the hair to become overly porous and permanently damage the hair cuticle. If you're serious about keeping a healthy head of hair as well as achieving pale delicate colors, i suggest going to a licensed cosmetologist who actually knows what they are doing.

    I'm really curious, how well does the coconut oil help to protect your hair while bleaching? Like, do you have barely any damage at all?

    • @jllianelise
      @jllianelise  7 лет назад +112

      Chubby Cake it helps a bit I've noticed... I think it soothes my hair and I've read it does help with a bit of protection. It's a nice (and successful) hair mask afterwards to sleep in. But what I mainly use it for in my bleaching process is to make the sectioning and application easier. I've done it a ton before without coconut oil and it would get so messy with dry hair and wetting your hair isn't good so coconut oil does both protect and put nutrients into the hair and it makes it super easy to apply to bleach!!!

      Chubby Cake bleach will eat through hair , coconut oil will slow the damaging effect while the bleach is working , i tried it before and it does help , i spent 4 years bleaching my roots every 16 days to maintain the platinum . Olaplex is better because its designed especially to help with the process . If you want to bleach here is a few things you can do : have a VERY dirty hair and oily scalp , coconut oil if your hair is clean . Bleach with low developer ( max 20 ) use blue bleach not white , try not to use heat at all & never use coconut oil or have dirty hair if you want to dye your hair , you will have a horrible uneven colour

      And that is why I always consult my hairdresser. He knows best, studied for it and knows what is possible with my hair and it's texture.
      I have bleached my hair myself for the very first time, but even when I go to my hairdresser... I make sure my hair and scalp are 'dirty' and the bleach won't burn my skin too much (sensitive skin).
      I know what I can do and I take my hairdresser's advice very seriously.
      After all, he rather sees healthy hair then have anyone come in to get their hair 'fixed' after a big fail due to misinformation or careless acting.

    Then 4hrs later I put on a streaking cap and colour my hair Purple & Rose Gold.
    Aluminium foil helps the blonde mixture to set as it hold in the heat for it to activate , be sure to put either Cooking Oil, Coconut Oil, Shea or Cocoa Butter, Vaseline, Baby oil on your ears and around the hair line even when colouring so it won’t stain your head or ears.

    I'm very grateful for you and this video! Thank you very much, this really works 100%, I've tried it and it's very helpful and informative. I have colored my hair at the salon for 17 years. My hair stylist moved a year ago and it hasn't been as bright ever since. I love all my hair stylists, but wanted to try myself. This video is also organized, very neatly and professionally. Don't be shocked if you doing this yourself at home isn't as neat. If you're doing it the first time like me, the entire room and bathroom were unorganized. Scalp will also tingle on both times. My color came out though excellent following all the steps in the video. I don't think I will go back to the salon to have it colored, only for other services. Thank you again! P.S. Make sure to use clothing you don't mind getting dirty! It also took me approximately under 4 hours to complete both processes (after waiting an hour to start the second process). Again, very helpful, informative and an extremely bright result. Hair bright, soft, smooth and healthy. Thank you! Sending love and hugs!

    Great video! Very informative in a short period of time. The coconut oil idea is genius. Although I would wear gloves and I usually just do a one time application of 40 volume for like 40 minutes to get the desired result on my hair. I only touch up like once every 2-3 months to avoid frying my hair though and then condition and do hair masks like crazy and only shampoo once a week after that.

      Never put 40 vol on your scalp, it will give you severe burns. The most I'd put is a 30 vol, but even that isn't ideal. It's much wiser to do two rounds of 20 vol

    It's super important to note that you do NOT want to stimulate the scalp and open the pores on your head before bleaching!!! In this process she starts out using two steps that involve stimulation: brushing in coconut oil then combing it through. These are great steps but be sure to do your best Not to drag the brush and comb across your scalp. If you do the pain from the bleach application can be 100x worse than need be!

    my hair is naturally dark/mid blonde could i get away with bleaching it just once

    • @jllianelise
      @jllianelise  7 лет назад +27

      Maria maybe.... however I've tried doing it only once and it never really gets as blonde as i want it and my hair is naturally mid brown... so I'd say if you're doing your full head you can try it and even go through with the toner and if you think it's not light enough ( which you'll be able to tell if there's any yellow in it) then you can always do a bleach bath to get it lighter which is mixing up the bleach powder and developer mixture and then adding shampoo in it to a 1:1 ratio... this way it kinda waters down the bleach and you can get it a bit lighter. The only thing you'll waste is your toner which they're like $8 a bottle... but it's worth it to test and see what your hair needs ... it's better to not over do it than trial and test to get it right. It took me my first 5-8 times to get it right and after 2 years now I still have to test it a bit as I go. Hope that helps.

    • @TheiaSilvermoon
      @TheiaSilvermoon 7 лет назад +10

      Maybe you were using too dark of a toner, the contributing pigment in the toner needs to be the same level as the color you want your hair to be. So say you want to go from a level 5 light brown/dark blond, and you want to go silver or ash white. You'd lift that hair to maybe and 8 or a 9 using a blue based bleach and a 30 or 40 vol (no coconut oil on the hair). You'd start at the midshaft of the hair and then go back through and hit the tips, then the roots. As the hair lightens, when it reaches that level 8 or 9, spray a bit of water and the bleach automatically deactivates. (To slow the processing you can use a drop or two of coconut oil in the bleach mix - for if you have longer hair like mine) when all the hair is done processing have someone double check that it all looks even (if you're doing this on yourself) otherwise, you're good. Shampoo with a neutralizing shampoo and then condition(without the neutralizing shampoo, your cuticle will be left open, hair has a natural acidic ph of about 4.5-5.5, and bleach is very alkaline, which lifts the cuticle. Neutralizing shampoo is very acidic, bringing back the natural balance). If you're worried about damage, it's okay, toner is just a deposit and won't damage the hair like bleach will bc it is less alkaline, and you can do moisture treatments after toning, unless you're worried the moisture treatment may discolor the hair, then by all means, go ahead. Tone the hair with a pale lavender, not a deep purple, to achieve a pale, delicate color. Too harsh of a contributing pigment will make the hair look odd and not give you the results you may be looking for. After toning, moisturize either using coconut oil or some other oil (I suggest argon). This will help you to save money and not waste any product in the future.

      might depend on your hair type, I also have semi dark blonde hair and I used little bleach with more 10 volume developer (not a 1:1 ratio but not exactly 2:1) then the toner and it was silvery white, more white at my roots because a majority of the length of my hair was faded out teal and didn't lift as well 😅

    Never ever bleach your hair within 72 hours of it being wet or freshly bleached. Your hair needs time for the pores to seal and have enough of your own natural oils on the strands to protect it from being chemically stripped. And never ever put your hair up while it has bleach on it! Anyone who has ever bleached their hair before knows that bleach heats up while developing on your hair. By putting your hair up you are not only unevenly developing your hair, but you're putting excess heat on your hair which, when mixed with the chemicals in the bleach, weakens your hair and will cause it to break off or turn into a jelly-like consistency .... before it breaks off.
