It always feels awesome when ThioJoe uploads a video related to windows settings. Would like an another video where you dig deeper in these settings and squeeze more performance.
7:09 I think this setting controls how long it takes for power requests to time out. The default value is the 32-bit integer limit in seconds, which is set that way to effectively disable timeouts
That's most likely it. It seems to always be set to 0xffffffff seconds when powered, but at least on my laptop it's set to 5 minutes when on battery
It looks like that value is 0x4444444 though? Unless 1 unit is 16 seconds?
@@SolomonUcko Maybe double check your math? 71,582,788 * 60 = 4,294,967,280 (0xFFFFFFF0), likely not calculated to be exactly at the integer limit due to rounding
There is a PowerSettingsExplorer utility made by someone on guru3d forums which can view, change, hide and unhide all these power settings for all power plans without ever needing to go to the windows power plan menu. I have used it so many times and it is a huge time saver.
Interesting 🤔
The HDD idle timeouts are actually very useful. If I remember correctly Windows turns off the hard drives after 20 minutes. If you only use them for backup or rarely used stuff, especially in a laptop it would make sense to reduce it
Yes! So, that's what's been happening! I use a 1TB TOSHIBA HDD to keep my non-essential files and I notice that every now and then File Explorer takes a hot minute to start reading the files that are there. And then I think to myself: "I paid so and so money for this good of a laptop and an HDD of quantifiable caliber for File Explorer to slow down on me."
It's a useful feature. In my HTPC, it keeps the drive with all the movies and music turned off until I need it, which will make the drive last longer.
I one installed games on a WD Blue which by default would spin down after eight seconds of inactivity (yes, seriously) so I needed to increase that time otherwise games would stutter everytime they loaded something new to RAM like a voice line
@@Thornskade How did you increased that time of your Hard Drive?
@@Aquabyte It's somewhere in the advanced Power Plan settings for your power profile. This was a long time ago so I don't remember what it's called
The advanced CPU power settings that I enable is the "Processor performance boost mode" that regulates the TurboBoost or AMD Boost of the processor. On a laptop I turn it off to save power when on battery and reduce fan usage keeping my CPU at stock speeds instead of boosted speeds. Turning off TurboBoost may help a lot with laptops when cooling is an issue.
You've come a loooong way since those satirical how to videos. I used to laugh my ass off watching those back in the day. Now I come here to get legit computer help. Thanks ThioJoe!
The Ultimate Power Settings is mostly reserved for the near-future Implementation of "Microsoft DirectStorage" technology that allows GPU communicate directly with SSD without waiting for request from CPU or RAM.
Max processor speed is useful for laptops to keep them from constantly overheating and throttling.
To elaborate on this for those who don't know: Setting max processor state to 99% instead of 100% disables the frequency boost feature, which is a sort of build-in temporary overclock that may cause overheating in some systems with poor cooling or in processors with shitty architectures.
@@AlexRaylighthow low is it possible to set the max processor state? My new laptop CPU temps hit 90C even with less than 20% load when gaming....
@@clbr4458 The setting I was talking about helps only with the boost feature. If your cpu overheats anyway, that indicates cooling issues, which may not be solvable when it comes to laptops.
I had a similar issue where I had a gaming laptop that could reach 90°C+. What worked best for me was a cooling pad, but make sure you get one that's powerful enough. (There are some very weak ones where you can barely feel the air moving.)
@@clbr4458I'd recommend undervolting instead
@@clbr4458i dont think laptops are meant to be pressed on too much, on a pc with considered cooling you can do that however you want though, if you dont care about power bill
Imo the cpu performance boost settings shouldnt be hidden, they make a huge temperature difference on laptop processors especially these days
i used an free app named quickcpu which allowed me to make a custom powerplan and there all of these settings were visible and allowed to change😊hope that helps
Where can I get this from?
The interrupt on change setting has to do with plugging and unplugging USB devices. The interrupt steering is so that drivers don't redirect requests to specific cores that may be asleep at the time to save power as well as slowing things down due to the wakeup procedures of that core and as data needs to be copied from one core to another. If it lets the system do the steering then its request can be sent to an active core which is likely to be the same core if it had an IRQ previously.
I thought the video was going to be a troll. Like years ago. Great to know that you're doing real computer tips and tricks now. 😊
6:42 I am glad to hear someone who is willing to admit that there is something they don't know.
It's worth noting that system oems can tie into these settings as well. For example, my Latitude E6530 from 2012 gives you an extra drop-down in the advanced menu for thermal mode where it gives you the options of Cool, which slows the CPU to 2.3ghz at least for the top tier i7-3720qm model like I have and more aggressively runs the fan to keep surface temps as low as possible. Quiet runs the fan very non-agressively and still limits the CPU to 2.3ghz to allow for quiet operation, standard is the default operations runs at full speed with the normal fan curve. Ultra performance removes the turbo boost time limit and runs the fan extremely aggressively to prevent thermal throttling, even if it results in 90 degree plus temps even after repasting. These settings do not affect GPU performance at least in the NVS5200M which is the top tier for this model, don't know about Intel graphics models.
yeah the fan starts to fly just to prevent "heat"
Well Nice video, but have you tried to do a performance test to see the difference between High performance and Ultimate performance?
I guess this is the only way we can really distinguish if windows has 'fine-tuned' high performance mode even further.
But I guess it would be a marginal difference of like 5 fps.
Mr. Thio Joe, you're an absolute king. I was searching for these things for literally one year, until I found your video.
If RUclips allows me, I would give you thousands of likes.

It also boosts the kernel and reduces the timers intended for audio video processing and actually unterdict a person, something it will actually trigger that due to the focus of avoiding until you do that 🤔

Good to see now more people will know about this. I always tweaked these settings whenever I reset my windows or get a new windows device. Boy the performance improvement that you get after tweaking them is amazing.
And what are you favorite adjustments?
What settings you tweaked?
@@Aquabyte Instead of selecting a high or ultra performance option, I have tweaked few settings for High performance and do note these are recommended only if you have plugged in your computer:
1. Settings enabled by default:
-> Device Idle Policy set to Performance
-> Turn off Hard disk after 10-15 mins
-> Wireless Adapter Settings set to max performance
-> PCI Express link state power management should be set to off.
-> Processor power management:
-> Minimum & Maximum Processor State set to 100%
2. To be enabled using the code:
-> Processor power management:
-> Processor performance boost mode set to Enabled from Aggressive.
If you want better battery & cooling for laptops, you can lower down or do the opposite of the settings mentioned above.
Apart from these, most of the settings shouldn't be tweaked as they are good enough.

@@thedigitallens Thanks dude. I have changed the PCI Link State Power Management before and it stopped micro-stutters in CS:GO. Will try all your settings once I reinstall 2 year old installation of Windows.
Thank you so much for this! I love getting Windows to work the way I want.
Win 10 suspended the USB despite opting the disabled option for both "battery and plugged in" for the "USB Selective suspend setting". But the advanced hidden settings as shown in this video helped to change the "USB 3 Link Power Management" settings which enabled the USB port. Thanks Thio Joe.
Edit: Double Quotes
I have made .bat files that adjust few CPU settings after comparing all settings between power saver and balanced plans. I've noticed that when using default power saver plan power consumption is low but CPU is kinda locked at lower frequencies so games can be a bit choppy at times. By adjusting few of the settings a little bit towards balanced plan values I can adjust performance/power consumption per game to minimize power consumption and still have good fps. At current electricity prices every little savings matter lol
Would you be kind enough to tell us how make those .bat files or give us any link to download them? I want to bring my 4yo laptop back to live so this would be pretty useful
By default a lot of the proccesor power settings don't do anything at least on modern cpus, a lot of them are related to controlling when the cpu goes from low idle powersaving speed to full speed, however this is now handled by the cpu itself, for that there's one setting on there that controlls how agresivly the cpu goes to higher speeds and one that disables the cpus build in controll and lets windows conrrol it.
And can be controlled in the bios, C-states.
Di u know Why when I click in ultimate performance do not save the changes when I close it?
@@Attix-lOl late reply could be your computer does not support ultimate performance
This would be helpful if you have multiple identical systems, but one behaves differently.
I used to support enterprise workstations that would receive enormous amounts of data 24 hours a day. I discovered that some workstations would periodically disconnect their integrated network cards in some idle states. Disabling all power saving of any kind fixed the issue, but not directly. I bet there was a hidden setting for that.
Maybe try running benchmarks on both Ultimate and Max power settings and see if it changes anything
well, according to my experience, there are some differences, when I switched from high performance mode to ultimate performance mode, my FPS decreased by ca 50%, and my friend had similar problem

Interesting video. Good to know.
Ultimate performance mode usually comes from power management tools. For example, on my custom built pc which has an MSI board, ultimate power became available after I installed MSI's dragon center. It's honestly just a tweaked high performance profile.
Interesting and curious. It really makes you wonder what else could be hidden, but however with that said sometimes it's best to leave them alone. At least for average users.
Maybe no harm in looking for knowledge but can be a disaster if messed with or changed. There is a very good reason why they are hidden.
In the DAW world where DPC latency tuning is sometimes requitrd this is great. Thanks a Million
Funny you mention that. I'd love to see someone tuning their system for that. I wonder if any of the hard drive options can keep my external drive turned on. It seems like my laptop turns it off after a short period, then when I go to add another Sample, it has to turn on and spin up the drive again. It's about 10 seconds of hanging.
What's DAW?

Idk if I’ll even mess with these settings myself
@@ThioJoe Maybe do it in a virtual machine to just explain all of that?
I’ve been waiting for this
I can confirm there is more than you can see in power plan settings. For example with my Ryzen there was drop in idle consumption on power-safe mode but if you clone balanced/performance and set ALL the settings like power-safe it didn't have the same effect. Yet if you clone balanced/performance and modify parent plan as power-safe then you have settings from balanced/performance yet CPU has lower idle consumption. I tried every single setting and none made the difference. Thus Windows or AMD drivers behave differently based on power plan type and not only just on the settings in power plan. This may explain why Ultimate Performance doesn't seem to have any extra changes in the settings yet it may behave differently.
Very interesting

is there any way to combine all individual settings of power saving power plan for battery mode, and settings of high performance mode for plugged in mode.
like automatically using power saving while in battery and using high performance mode while plugged in.
is there any short command for this?
7:08 It's 136(.19) years because that's the maximum possible number of seconds an unsigned 32-bit value can hold, and they didn't think to make it signed so they could use a negative number to indicate "off" (since there's no such thing as a negative interval of time and the maximum signed amount of 68 years is more than sufficient); they figured using the highest possible value is good enough to "equal" off. Amateur hour. (It's not backwards-compatibility, it was this dumb from the start.) 😒
Don’t know if this is a hidden setting or not, but my PC has an internal speaker that beeps all the time when the CPU is under high load. How can I disable the beeper? I cannot find any way to do this.

I just use Bitsum Highest Performance power plan and I checked the box to reveal processor speeds in power settings in Park Control
Looking through the settings there is some BIG-little core settings in there to deal with intels hybrid processors.
But also the option to require a password when you come out of sleep. Thats a good one for home users ^^ (Dont do this on your laptops.....)

From your perspective, is Windows 11 better to use or can give performance like Windows 10?
Win 11 performance can be better on new hardware (new GPU drivers work better for example because of new WDDM). But you can make performance better by yourself if you disable all windows mitigations (all from defender, virtualization based security, spectre mitigations) and stuff like dynamictick, then it will be at least the same as latest win10 or even faster (can be done in win 10 also)
Do these settins appear in godmode?

im having an issue ive typed in the cmd for ultimate plan but it still doesnt show is there something i need to enable
i've been bothered for a while now that i can't charge my laptop from my docking station because it doesn't have enough power. If you look at the power supply specifications, it's true (power supply 150w, docking station 135w), but since my laptop only needs about 40-60w most of the time, it should be possible.
Maybe I can find the solution to my problem...

Why i couldn't duplicate any new power plan schemes? I already run the command but nothing added. Only the 'balanced' available.
Also can't add the attributes as well, even no error when i'm running the command 😢
Thank you so much, this is really helpful.
Found out that if you have an 8 core cpu, it makes sense to adjust the percentages in the park core section for a better matching of the mathematical fraction of the actual number of cores.
For instance 10% of 8 cores = 0.8 cores doesn't make a lot of sense, right?
So I made sure to use setting following the fact that 1 core of a 8 core cpu is of course 12.5% which led to use 13% since the setting does not seem to allow fractions.
Then I did the same with the percentage settings that are taking care of the frequency load (X % of max fq), matching my AMDMrsTweaker custom p-states.
Never had better fps in Fortnite's current season. 😃👍
P.S.: The guys at the Windows power plan department are kinda lazy, ngl 😅

Why when I click in ultimate performance do not save the changes when I close it?
I don't think high/ultimate performance is necessary for consumers since the CPU clock speeds will always be boosting, no matter if the payload is minimal. This is very energy inefficient, and the balance mode regulates clock speeds and power consumption.
Any one of hidden setting is not showing even after i am Putting the commands

Does it help me to increase the performance on my computer?!
An actual solution for that one person who posted "help my power settings are missing" somewhere.
I set the Max CPU performance in the balanced 99% and it drops my CPU performace to 3700hz and then when gaming it will boost up to 4900hz. the temp drops by almost 20C in general use.
I keep mine on balanced, In testing I've done, I saw zero performance difference between ultimate and balanced power modes, Power saving mode hurts performance though. But the way I see it, My main PC is like a jack of all trades, its acts like nas, a back up media server, a back up DNS server, so its on most of the time, and I figure letting the clock speeds clock down, its just a tiny bit of power savings.
I got another PC I use as a media server and also the main DNS server for my network but if it goes down, my main one picks it up, and im usually the only one that uses a nas, so I retired my make shift true nas saystem and just use my main PC, not ideal, but it works.
There is actually a difference between High Performance and Balanced. I used to get micro-stutters in CS:GO and a bit of input lag on Balanced setting, when I switched to High Performance, the micro-stuttering was completely gone and my input lag also disappeared and game felt a lot more smoother.
