  • Theres many longboard surfing turns and I always thought many of them were just for style. This experiment with drop knee turns proved my theory wrong. Enjoy!

    The drop knee. Try to rotate your front foot outward towards the rail. This anatomically opens up your key body joints (ankle, knee, groin, hips) which in turn allows you to drop lower, opens your shoulders more comfortably forward, and turn the nose more sharply off the tail without bogging. Works a treat for backhand, drop knee take offs. You want to be so low that your leading hand is skimming the water. Good luck. You're in a good place.

    An observation looking at you doing a dropknee on land @5:05 you are low and balanced. When doing them in the water you are tall and not front on most of the time. I don't do dropknees, but being front on mostly relates to good balance/ control in surfing. Another observation is perhaps looking at the board while doing the dropknee. Great content once again! Can't wait to see your content blow up, the quality is of a high standard!

      thanks so much Tim! your exactly right! the turns I did better on, I was lower and more balanced. I also noticed the looking at the board problem yesterday while editing haha. I think my next time out I’ll be so much better at them now that I have the form a little more figured out, and I can start focusing on looking where I’m going

    I've been watching thru some of your videos and found myself wondering "when is he gonna start trying drop knees". Looks like it was 7 months ago.
    Indeed, they are a bit of a novelty in that other turns accomplish the same thing. But they're definitely functional and add classic long board style. They're also fun to do.
    I've tried 2 techniques. If you keep your feet perpendicular to the stringer (stay in full front side/back side stance) you do the turn with your normal trailing foot back. If you open your shoulders for a deck walking stance you'll take a single back cross step and turn in to a switch stance. Since your shoulders are open to the nose this usually doesn't feel too awkward like a full switch stance can.
    Like you've pointed out, skake boarding doesn't help with turn but does help cross stepping.
    I have no idea what happened to me as a kid. But I established a locked in body memory of riding a skateboard goofy foot and a surfboard regular.
    (Goofy on a snow board too) But this doesn't equate to being able to switch stance worth a damn.
    The only switch I can do is the one step back drop knee when my shoulders are open.

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 года назад

      I'd really like to learn what you're talking about with the switch stance drop knee. Phil rajzman does this so well. It might come a bit easier for you with your wacky goofy/regular stance mix up haha!

    • @michaelburk9171
      @michaelburk9171 2 года назад

      @@LongboardSessions wacky foot is a great term.
      Difficult to describe here. Ideally you want your feet not much farther apart than our shoulder width at any time. When you take off and move your back foot back your stance is usually wider than that. Unless you start with a super close stance. Or do a quick hop back or slide/shuffle your front foot back to maintain width of stance. A cross step back can let you move from a shoulder width stance back to another shoulder width stance by moving just one foot.
      You've mentioned doing a hop when you get in a hurry. Trying to maintain width of stance might be the reason.
      I switched to the sup learning curve about 6 years ago. And got a smaller less stable but more maneuverable board every year. I started at 12' and am now down to an 8' high performance (for a 210 lb 55 year old any way) JP Australia Surf Slate.
      I did cross step on the longer boards. But the "sweet spot" where I can turn well on my current board is so small that the only cross step I can do is the single one back in to something like a drop knee turn. I usually do this near the end of rides to do slow drifting back side turns or to get my weight back so I can pull out of white water. It lets me do a quick pivot front side until the board is pointing out of the white water then a cross step forward to push the nose down behind the white water. This lets me remain standing. Never seen any one else do this on a sup but me. Maybe it's the wacky foot thing. (I do see long boarders use this to pivot their boards quickly out the back tho) maybe that's another thing to put on your list

      Thanks Esteban! Practicing cross stepping on a longboard has been the single greatest on land practice for me. I noticed the benefits after only two skateboarding sessions worth of practice. I've even been thinking of producing my own surfing specific longboard skateboard to sell lol.
      That being said, any longboard will do the trick. Try and find the longest one you can. Hamboard makes one that's over 6' long that would be perfect... it is $600 tho
