  • The plot in a nutshell:
After the Beethoven intro to the song, Ritchie showcases his talents with a mesmerizingly beautiful guitar solo and then brings the song to a sudden halt, only to disappear into the wings, leaving the audience flabbergasted about what to expect next.
Determined the audience is in no mood for a bass solo, Rob decides to surprise Ritchie with a birthday present, summoning him back on stage.
Much to Rob's surprise, Ritchie spoils the surprise by bringing the band his own bucket of surprises, the purpose of which will forever remain a mystery.
Ritchie tries to accept Rob's gift (a toy guitar) but when Rob, totally oblivious of Ritchie's outstretched arm, goes on and on about the gift, Ritchie loses patience and waves Rob goodbye.
After Rob's numerous attempts at summoning Ritchie back on stage prove futile, the song finally ensues with a splendid solo from Jens, including a snippet of Finlandia, much to the crowd's appreciation.
At the song's finish, Rob and Ritchie apparently exchange words about the mysterious white bucket Ritchie had brought onto the stage, but perhaps the moment is gone and Ritchie spreads his arms in frustration and exits the scene.
Shot with a Panasonic DMC-TZ101 in 4k, cropped, colors adjusted, stabilized about half way thru (after several attempts my Computer just couldn't handle the whole song stabilized but kept flashing the Mercalli logo at the start of a stabilized clip)
Audio recorded with a Zoom H1.
A special thanks to tkl69 for providing me with additional footage where my own was shaky or otherwise unusable. A big thanks to A J Photo and Video for uploading good quality footage of the song, especially the gift episode.

For those fools that thinks they are back in 70's, i can only say: Richie is over 70 years old and cannot repeat energy from his youth. Nobody can do that. But he's doing excellent job with Blackmore's Night. This is only he's goodby with Rock. When you realized that, you may enjoy this.Long live Richie Blackmore, King of Rock an' Roll.

I was there, a mediocre concert. Much better in London O2 and in Birmingham (both times). And Ritche showed he has no self irony - sad for Rob. I believe there were no encores either. But, great recording! 🙂

Look at Led Zeppelin's integrity, perfectly intact. Their 02 arena one off gig was awesome, they don't have to prove a thing. Ritchie needs to finally give up the rock thing. I would love to see Purple invite him up for a few songs just like they did for Jon Lord then that's it. Finish off with the medieval thing

He’s basically having a last hurahhhhhh with the strat…. He has said that many times… the true purple/ rainbow fans will pay whatever it takes to see him on stage one last time and also know his better playing days are well behind him…. It’s all about seeing him and not necessarily watching or hearing him blasting a ten minute solo at lightning speed like once before… the guy is over seventy with arthritis in his hands and has nothing to prove to anyone…. Give him credit for he’s the only guitarist I know who has constantly worked and performed year after year since he started back in the 60’s…. Decade after decade, not like Clapton, Beck or Page who were on a high for one decade and then disappeared….. 👍
