- In tiki bars across the country, there are secret societies and clubs that you almost never hear about. Clubs where you earn your membership with the loyalty that you show to the bar...
Okay, this may be a bit hyperbolic and a sensationalist way to explain a 'loyalty program', but it's more fun this way, so get off me.
Here's the cocktail that you received in the 1960's from the Mai Kai after you became a member of the Okole Maluna Society.
To make the the drink in the video you will need:
--------------------------------------
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz fresh orange juice
1/2 oz fresh white grapefruit juice
1/2 oz passion fruit syrup
1/2 oz dark Jamaican rum
1oz gold Cuban rum
2 dashes Angostura bitters
4 oz crushed ice
--------------------------------------
Put everything in a blender or spindle mixer and blend at high speed for exactly 5 seconds. Pour into a bamboo mug or tall glass.
Garnish with a mint sprig.
--------------------------------------
Spike's Breezeway Cocktail Hour tiki mug is available in a limited edition of 300 and at the posting of this video, 1/2 of them are already sold out. The mug was loosely modeled after the Leroy Schmaltz-carved tiki (Oceanic Arts) that flanks the left side of the Breezeway bar. This will sell out and once they're gone, they're gone for good. Breezeway hidden cork society!
Great episode, as always. I remember making this drink and thinking "that's it?!" as well when I got the bottom. I've made it a double everytime since then.
A black velvet painting of yourself next to a giant cork.
I joined a secret society once but they wouldn't tell me the name or where they met.
Wife and I have completed our passports for Ventiki, a great tiki bar in Ventura.
There is really only one modern day "Tiki Secret Society". Its existence since the early 2000's has been a mystery, but its infuence in making this world a better place can not be debated. But its secret, so we don't talk about it 🍹😏👍🏻
Great video! My husband and I just earned admiral status (200 runs) in the Kill Devil Explorer's Club at Laka Lono Rum Club in Omaha, Nebraska.
The rum lists that I’ve completed are Kon-Tiki Expedition (Oakland), Kill-Devil Club at Forbidden Island, Guardian of the Cove at Smuggler’s Cove
Great episode as usual. Thanks so much for the shout out, Spike! Glad I could contribute in some small way to the show.🙏
That black velvet portrait is on the way! Soon enough. Great video, my friend!!
Great episode, Spike! I've read both those books, but somehow missed knowing about the Mai Kai drink club. If you ever need a quiet tiki bar to film an episode, you're always welcome to come back to my place.
Love learning about the history of Tiki bars. Great drink too!!
Awesome episode! Love the mug too. Are they available anywhere?
I can't wait to return to the Mai Kai
Great video Spike! Fun info on the secret societies of tiki.
Great episode. Thanks for the hard work. Are you out of Cuban rum.
Glassware link broken....thanks for another cool video to watch.
Thanks for the video and the bonus view of the inside of the Breezeway!
Oh man, I can't even hear the phrase
Love your channel dude. Don’t sleep on the song “Big Bamboo” by Horace Peterkin. 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
