One big issue is the loan services do not inform borrowers of these rights, to first rehabilitate and second do income based repayment for old student loan debt. Thank you for providing this information to those who struggle with Federal debt.

I am on income driven pmts, and a senior . I am also terminal with cancer and am so over re applying every year..they have one option for cancer and that is even worse because you have to reapply every six months. When you are so sick and taking chemo it is just awful, I have been given one year to live and yet they force you to keep reapplying

If your student loan is federal, there's a calculator online that you can use to determine if you qualify. The federal student loan administrators are obligated to help you if you qualify. I personally know people who pay zero on their student loans because of income qualifications. Be aware, though, that the interest continues to build even when you are in one of the income-driven repayment plans. If you think you'll never have enough income to repay the loan, however, the remainder is forgiven after 20-25 years, as I understand it, depending on the age of the loan.

My husband is 63. He is 30% permanently disabled veteran. He is still working. He's been paying for years and still owes $70,000. He went back to school in his mid 40's and has a Master's Degree in Cross cultural education. He was unable to secure a permanent teaching position once he relocated from California to another State. They required him to get a teaching credential from this new state. This would have required taking courses and increasing his debt. He was only given substitute teaching positions and eventually resigned. His payments are just over $400 a month. He recently had it temporarily reduced to $173. This is a real struggle for us and eventually, we will have to retire for physical reasons. I'm scared for the day we can't work anymore and we will only have our Social Security. We live paycheck to paycheck and have very limited savings.

I think that a lien should be put on any property people own that owe student loans. This way people can’t sell their property without paying off a loan owed to the taxpayers of this country. These people had their whole working career to pay off their investment of college, instead they probably drove nice vehicles, took nice vacations and over spent their whole life and now the cry. Oh well, I’ll enjoy my nice pension and almost max social security in my homes we have the deed to because I didn’t waste money on college and still made millions during my working career. Actually over 1 mil my last ten years in my techie job. My whole careers was like that making close 75,000 at 28 which is about 200,000 today. I am tired of paying taxes for people that refuse to cover their own debt.

Good advice for younger persons but seniors sometimes find that life didn't work out like they planned, often because of no fault of their own. It's not a perfect world. A set-off of 15% of Social Security for someone whose only income is $1250 Social Security can be devastating. Lawmakers in their wisdom have provided means whereby this set-off can be stopped or prevented for the poor amongst us. There but for the grace of God go any among us. I really wish it was as black and white as that. I worked for 45 years as a Registered Nurse. I saved and had quite a bit of money in my tax shelter and the promise of a good monthly amount of social security. In the 2008 downturn, my tax shelter was decimated. I tried to take my money out of the higher risk stocks and my analyst kept telling me to hang on and that I wouldn't have a way to turn my situation around unless I stayed in the market. Clearly, I wasn't given good information. I was upset but knew that I planned on working another 10 or 12 years so I felt that there was an opportunity to recoup. In 2015 several things happened. I started having horrible back pain, my car died and I was diagnosed with diabetes. I tried to continue working but the Doctor said that it was chronic changes to my back related to repetitive lifting, pulling and pushing. I was too young for Medicare and without work I didn't have health insurance. My diabetes medications averaged $650 per month. My car insurance averaged $275 per month, my heating bill from November to April ran about $700 per month. I started living on my credit cards and was able to make my bills each month by "robbing Peter to pay Paul". When I had exhausted my credit card limits, I had no further way to pay my bills. I called my credit card companies and asked to set up a payment plan. I told them I planned to be accountable to pay my debts but needed to have a brief respite until I qualified for Medicare and hopefully my prescription cost would go down. They told me that I had made the debt and I needed to pay my bills. I again told them that I planned to but needed short term help. They refused. They did tell me that if I filed bankruptcy that they would leave me alone if I gave them the name of my lawyer and my case number. I also had to buy a car. I bought a bottom of the line, Ford. I took the last money out of my savings to change from electric heat to propane heat but by this time, I was so far behind the eight ball that I didn't know what to do. I have student loan debt of about $25,000. I have been helped by the freeze placed on student loan debt by the government related to COVID.
I am in a period of time where I am trying to find my way out of this and frankly, other than being stupid about my tax shelter, I don't fell that I did anything to directly impact my debt. It is funny that the credit card companies have told me to file for bankruptcy as they then write the debt off on their taxes. They would rather do that than have me pay a monthly sum. The system we live under is quite interesting. Anyway, I know what you are trying to say, that if we make our debts we need to pay our debts but it isn't always that easy.

Wallstreet banks get bailouts whenever they need it. Congress gave 100’s of millions in last ‘stimulus’ bill to foreign countries( which will be siphoned back to congress members as kick-backs). Congressmen enter as middle class and leave congress mu,ti millionaires. The beat goes on and on. Then, congress passes legislation to make these students debt slaves for the rest of their lives! Oh and let’s not forget the trillions wasted on endless war since 2001, chasing the boogie man in caves around the world! Just print the debt away, congress has no problem nor does Executive Branch to print for all the other pork and BS!
