“Is that you, Tolbert? This isn’t very funny you know. I’m hung over, my knees are killing me and if you’re gonna pull this s- at least you could have said you’re from the Yankees.”
I love Taylor’s body language after Vaughn shakes off the curveball sign the second time. He’s thinking to himself “we’re really doing this, aren’t we?”
Just to add... Charlie was a highschool pitcher, and could throw a fast ball in the mid to high 80s, which is the reason he looked so comfortable and natural on the mound. To make it appear as if the ball was moving faster than it was, the mound was actually moved up. Also - Charlie admits to being on steroids for this movie in an attempt to get his fast ball even faster.
LOL! I remember that part of the movie. Here are a few of Tom Berenger's (aka "Jake Taylor") ensuing lines from that scene: To Charlie Sheen (aka "Rick Vaughn"): "Just relax, I'll take care of that" To the A's hitter: "By the way, I saw your wife dancing last night, you must be real proud of her......". This line distracts the hitter just enough for him to hit a high foul popup above home plate on Vaughn's first pitch. Taylor jumps up and throws off his catcher's mask and says, "Ah, this one's over, I don't think it's got the distance!" and catches the popup for the final out of the game. :^)
Never noticed in all the years I've watched the film, the ump is moving to call the strikeout before the ball even got to the plate. Doing his best Leslie Neilsen I guess.....
I bet he simply jumped the gun (missed his cue, screwed up the timing). Actors do that a lot!!!!!!!! In editing they probably just said, "Ahh he turned to early to punch him out. Oh well, let's use it. Too much work to re-do the scene. Only those with a VCR will see it's off." Or something like that.
Out of all the baseball movies, Charlie Sheen probably looks the most like a baseball player. His motion is good, and his follow through was even better.
I remember reading a story that one time Charlie Sheen purchased a ticket for every single seat in the right field stands for some random game at Angel Stadium because he wanted to catch a home run ball
I don't want to check all of the comments to see if this has already been posted, but Haywood was played by Pete Vukovich, former major league pitcher who won the Cy Young award as a pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Been so long since I've gotten to play some baseball. Spent my whole childhood and into my teens playing nonstop with my 3 neighborhood friends....we had our own league going and kept track of our numbers/stats and everything....miss playing!!
That’s a little sad, but awesome that you kept stats for all that. I’m a numbers guy, so I probably would have done the same as you. Listen, it’s NEVER too late to play anything!
Yes. I had something similar. We had 5 kids, we kept stats, we would take turns pitching to each other... Its hard to play pick up baseball, because you need 18 people to play a game
I absolutely LOVE what Tom Berenger (aka "Jake Taylor") says in this scene to the Yankees hitter after the first two strikes: After strike 1: "That sucker was moving, wasn't it? If it hits you, it'll leave a two foot hole coming out!.........OK, what should we call now? Let's see how the kid feels about the old Number 1!"........" After strike 2: "Aw shit! All these pitches to choose from! Maybe we ought to try something different this time!" LMAO! :-)
Berenger's body language after Vaughn shook off the signs, and he gave in and called for the fastball. Nice touch. Good piece of acting. Berenger was really good in this. "One more good year in the sun."
I was that catcher when I played. Talking to the batter, the pitcher and throwing the hitter off his stride. Made sense to have the batter think a different pitch other then the Terminator was coming
Excellent pitch selection here. First he starts him with a 2-seamer on the inside corner, then goes up with a 4 seamer at the top of the zone, which perfectly sets up the high 4-seamer...
Seriously, this is one of the most bad-@$$ scenes I've ever seen! I've been an avid baseball fan my whole life, and this scene captures the epic drama of baseball so well! Love it!
my college coach (Dan Quisenberry) always said..."the high fast ball is the right pitch to a right handed power hitter...they can't hit it, can't lay off it"...too bad we had no one who could through high 90s heat...LOL
Obviously it’s a movie, but this scene illustrates that if you’re a pitcher with an overpowering fastball, it must always be your go-to pitch in a tough spot, regardless of how good your off-speed stuff is. This especially applies when facing a great hitter. If he gets around on it and connects, so be it. Odds are much better he’s gonna swing right through it. A breaking pitch, on the other hand, can work just as well if not better, but there’s so much less margin for error. Anybody who knows baseball knows what happens to a breaking pitch that doesn’t break, especially against a great hitter.
Bassmaster Florida When Ricky threw the first strike the ball was quite low to the ground, I'm wondering if he wanted too throw the ball towards the ground. Plus if the ball hits the ground it doesn't count as a strike, it's a foul ball 0:36
Many of you must have watched the behind the scenes stuff..the actors actually did a spring training month to get ready for the film...Charlie was so good because he was a great pitcher in high school...and was considering playing college ball..however he went to some college games and realized he wasn't a good as what he was watching...so he decided to follow his dad into acting..
Pete Vuckovich did an amazing job on this particular role, actually. He fit the role perfectly because being an asshole comes naturally to him. I've met him a few times unfortunately.
Blake Hardy They had to do something to put butts in the seats (as they say!)!!!!! They sure were not doing it by winning games!!!!!!!! Then the 1990's came and the Glavine, Smolts group came to pitch - and all of a sudden - the Braves had 3 or 4 Hall of Fame pitchers and won the division 12 years in a row - tying the Moscow Cosmos (European soccer) for the most division championships in a row!!!!!!!!!
Sheen was actually a pitcher, also the wall scaling scene with Snipes was actually real and Snipes himself. The director and producers all say Snipes was crazy athletic.
Well, yeah Cleveland Municipal Stadium was one of the largest stadiums in baseball. (85,000) Even though Jacob's Field had the sellout record (ending at 455 consecutive sellouts) for a decade, it was still only 35,000 people.
Cleveland Muni was a huge stadium, but the movie was actually filmed at Milwaukee County Stadium, the home of the Milwaukee Brewers. I probably went to a dozen games there before they built Miller Park and tore down County.
“Forget about the curve ball, Ricky...give em the heater” RIP Skipper
GIVE 'IM THE HEATER!
I hear that every time I watch Nash Bridges. 😂
"Forget about the curveball, Ricky. Give him the heater." One of the all-time great line readings.
It's how you speak when you know you're right through a smile and a big ass moose-tasche
Turned into a games weapon text too 😭
I can't think of another movie with anymore more best 1 liners
“Is that you, Tolbert? This isn’t very funny you know. I’m hung over, my knees are killing me and if you’re gonna pull this s- at least you could have said you’re from the Yankees.”
Got to love how the 1982 Cy Young winner plays the monster hitter in this movie.
Mark8675332 wow. I never knew that.
Vuck
The 1981 AL Batting champion played the monster hitter in Angels in The Outfield.
He’s my uncle
@@1and2shoerestoration That's great
I love Taylor’s body language after Vaughn shakes off the curveball sign the second time. He’s thinking to himself “we’re really doing this, aren’t we?”
If Vaughn did that to Crash Davis he would have been made to regret it

Thanks mate, As an Australian, this was my introduction to baseball :)
nfr201 I thought he reached the mid 80's *after* taking steroids, not during high school.
Are you saying he actually pitched a 101 mph fastball here? :O
Joseph DiSalvo No. How the fuck did you get that?
MikeDunn he just said he could throw mid 80s.
Then did steroids, and also had a mound height advantage.
I absolutely LOVE the epic walk to the mound to the song “Wild Thing” right before this scene!! Charlie’s walk was 🔥🔥🔥🔥
'89 was a hell of a year for comedies. The Burbs, Major League, UHF, Christmas Vacation, Road House...
What a lineup!
Not entirely comedy, but Field of Dreams was 1989 also. My team, the Cubs, won 93 and the NL East that year. Lost in the nlcs to the Giants 4-1.
I love it when he says, "Alright. Let's get nasty."

Junior year, my baseball coach would randomly yell “give em the heater Ricky!” to our pitchers from the dugout
From the standpoint of cinematography and editing, this is a beautifully crafted scene..
One of charlies greatest movies ever
Never noticed in all the years I've watched the film, the ump is moving to call the strikeout before the ball even got to the plate.
Doing his best Leslie Neilsen I guess.....
Good catch.
Scott Reece The ball was past him when Haywood swings, which is why the Ump was turning to punch him out.
George Baldwin Not for strike 3. He was on his way to calling that strike well before the swing.
chaseman12 I'd bet he was simply following the script!!!!!!!!! Actor do that a lot!!!!!!
I bet he simply jumped the gun (missed his cue, screwed up the timing). Actors do that a lot!!!!!!!!

Out of all the baseball movies, Charlie Sheen probably looks the most like a baseball player. His motion is good, and his follow through was even better.
Lenny Draheim Well Sheen is a former pitcher so it's no surprise
He's also a HUGE baseball fan.. So I've been told lol
I remember reading a story that one time Charlie Sheen purchased a ticket for every single seat in the right field stands for some random game at Angel Stadium because he wanted to catch a home run ball
I heard another story that Bob Uecker bought 500 pairs of pants so that he could sit on park benches.
He pitched in high school.
No music
No bad movie
Just a masterpiece
Legend has it - the groundskeepers still thinks they're sh*tty.
I don't want to check all of the comments to see if this has already been posted, but Haywood was played by Pete Vukovich, former major league pitcher who won the Cy Young award as a pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Hey....I just noticed Vaughn had a skull and crossbones in the middle of his glasses! What a badass!
3 straight smokin hot fastballs and down goes Haywood!
Yeah, with a career slash line of .159/.169/.192 LOL
Ted Williams once told my cousin at his baseball camp "Never, ever, ever throw the same pitch 3 times in a row." Ricky Vaughn got lucky there!
Dunno why I always thought that was Hrabosky instead of Vuckovich. Liked 'em both, though. I remember watching Vuke in the '82 Series.
@@39KHall I was thinking the same thing they look similar....
Ty Tratar no one was also throwing 100 mph when Ted Williams played. If you throw that hard, that’s probably the only time you’ll get away with it.

.....it was in That Moment; "They knew they FUCKED UP!" Lol
It's almost like Vaughn has tiger blood in his veins.
This is my favorite Ricky Vaughn moment in this film.
Sheen's throwing motion was truly impressive. Too many baseball movies have an actor slinging the cheese like a sissy! LOL!
He trained with professionals and was juicing to look as legit as possible. His fastball was in the 80s for this movie.
+Ryan Monteleone really lmao
tionlover yeah I can't remember where I read it, but you can probably Google it. He took the role seriously lol
Sheen played baseball in high school so he knows a little bit.
Tim Robbins in Bull Durham was that sissy
Pretty good pitching motion. Definitely played ball at a reasonable level sometime in his life
Forget about the curveball, Ricky. Give him the heater.
Fastball grenade mod - Borderlands Series
The 3 straight heaters gets me pumped to this day. Wow what a great movie
1st heater: 97 MPH
2nd heater: 99 MPH
3rd heater: 101 MPH
Quite possibly the best baseball movie ever. The Natural and Field of Dreams are a close second.
"It happens every spring"
Charlie Sheen is one of the few actors in a sports movie that look like they could play that sport for real.

The yankee hitter is Pete Vuckovich, starting pitcher who played for the White Sox, Blue Jays, Cardinals and Brewers, between 1975 and 1986.

I have to wonder why his little kick in the air wasn't there in Major League 2? It made his whole pitching motion that more badass.
