They cut out the "you don't have to fetch me coffee.." part. Believe it or not, that's the part I remember most about this scene. Tess finally being in a position of authority, and not abusing it because she knows how it feels.
Maj Mahal Tess would be the type of boss I would work for she is somebody that doesn’t abuse their authority and take you for granted by taking advantage of your kindness and generosity, unlike Katherine she took the credit for Tess’ idea and tried to pass it off as her own. Some bosses talk down to you then treat you like dirt and make you feel like that you are nothing to them. Then bully and harass you out of your employment to the point where you would quit your job, and then use dirty tricks to get you terminated from your employment.
Yup - "first of all, I don't expect you to fetch me coffee unless you're getting some for yourself. I expect you to call me Tess. And the rest we'll just make up as we go along." Over 30 years since I saw the movie but I can still remember that line :-)
Amen - you realize there are still jerks out there that "still" act as if one has to get coffee for these jerks that wouldn't make coffee themselves until I got there? I thank God I left not because of that but because of the sexual harassment that I endured at this small office. NEVER again did I have to deal with such vulgar display by any man except when I was in my early 20s at a different time at a different office? Men felt they can step over the line each time. This totally grossed me out.
My mom started out as a secretary in the 60s. She got her MBA after my sis and I were born. Sadly she never got that big office, but this scene always makes me think of what she might have gone on to achieve at the workplace had circumstances been kinder to her. When I ask her how she feels about it now, she feels she achieved a lot in life anyway. She continues to win people with her charm and humility, and I aspire to be exactly like that :)
Your mom might not have got a big office but she has you..... Ask her what does she adore more..... You r like her... the way you feel.... You r like her...
And that's the real gender disparity in employment. It's not that men and women really get paid differently for the SAME work, it's that MOTHERS pay a penalty for the time away from the office and from a perceived lack of focus. It costs them over time.
What a great scene this was, the way it was set up to have you thinking Tess was starting a new secretarial job and her secretary actually using her office. I'm sure every single viewer was fooled ! Then when the knockout punch comes you can't help but cheer for Tess finally breaking thru. Melanie Griffith was so spot-on perfect for this role
I was too young to understand all of the film from a video tape rented by someone when I was around grade 8 and I wish this film will be remade by a good team soon. The story of never-give up your dream inspired me. The song - Let the River Run is always in my mind.

Priceless scene. Hard work, honesty, humbleness will always get you there. Brown noses may be loud and high but no matter what people on top always cherish the former.
Tell us you've never worked in business, without saying that you've never worked in business. The corporate overlords don't give a rat's rosy red one about honesty, "humbleness", or hard work. All they care about is profit, and how they can manipulate the system to get more of it. Everything else is a tool to be used in the pursuit of money and power. And if anyone thinks otherwise, they're blindly naive.

Working Girl is my favorite movie and I am glad that Tess finally made her way to the top with being honest and business savy and how Jack Trainer helped her because he saw something in her and Katherine got the boot and good! In the business world its all backstabbing and getting ahead by gaining access to other people's ideas! I am so glad that she made it in Trask Industries and Sandra Bullock played Tess in Working Girl (TV) mini-series in 1988 when she was in NYC!
As a man, I had a very similar similar encounter in the early 90’s. Not quite as dramatic as how this movie played out, but similar in all the relevant ways… and no I did not need a secretary and no I didn’t coffee fetched. I needed an assistant, and eventually a partner. That’s what I got and that’s who I elevated. Every chance I got!
This scene aspect… should have included the entire ending of this movie: But as I am observing Tess as she had just obtained a new position as a co-business executive… she still had the “secretary mentality”, not fully realizing that she had made a previous decision and move that would not only change her life and career… but also a position of which she only “dreamed” about… But when that dream became reality, she nearly had a difficult time processing the reality of what she had just accomplished and achieved.
That "please, thank you" after "milk and sugar" goes to show how humble and blown away Tess was when it was, for the first time ever, someone else running the coffee.
Yeah, it was almost unheard of for a secretary/administrative assistant to be promoted to management. Even if she was qualified they wouldn't even consider her.
I like the fantasy fulfilment aspect of this scene but at the same time I find it hard to believe Tess would turn up for a new job and not even know what it was

Tess liked Katherine from the start until she found out that Katherine stole her idea and Katherine Parker said "Two way street and you make it happen!"
