    They cut out the "you don't have to fetch me coffee.." part. Believe it or not, that's the part I remember most about this scene. Tess finally being in a position of authority, and not abusing it because she knows how it feels.

    • @Squab1972
      @Squab1972 5 лет назад +36

      Maj Mahal Tess would be the type of boss I would work for she is somebody that doesn’t abuse their authority and take you for granted by taking advantage of your kindness and generosity, unlike Katherine she took the credit for Tess’ idea and tried to pass it off as her own. Some bosses talk down to you then treat you like dirt and make you feel like that you are nothing to them. Then bully and harass you out of your employment to the point where you would quit your job, and then use dirty tricks to get you terminated from your employment.

      Yup - "first of all, I don't expect you to fetch me coffee unless you're getting some for yourself. I expect you to call me Tess. And the rest we'll just make up as we go along." Over 30 years since I saw the movie but I can still remember that line :-)

    • @angelacarleton9575

      Amen - you realize there are still jerks out there that "still" act as if one has to get coffee for these jerks that wouldn't make coffee themselves until I got there? I thank God I left not because of that but because of the sexual harassment that I endured at this small office. NEVER again did I have to deal with such vulgar display by any man except when I was in my early 20s at a different time at a different office? Men felt they can step over the line each time. This totally grossed me out.

    My mom started out as a secretary in the 60s. She got her MBA after my sis and I were born. Sadly she never got that big office, but this scene always makes me think of what she might have gone on to achieve at the workplace had circumstances been kinder to her. When I ask her how she feels about it now, she feels she achieved a lot in life anyway. She continues to win people with her charm and humility, and I aspire to be exactly like that :)

      And that's the real gender disparity in employment. It's not that men and women really get paid differently for the SAME work, it's that MOTHERS pay a penalty for the time away from the office and from a perceived lack of focus. It costs them over time.

    But as I am observing Tess as she had just obtained a new position as a co-business executive… she still had the “secretary mentality”, not fully realizing that she had made a previous decision and move that would not only change her life and career… but also a position of which she only “dreamed” about…
    But when that dream became reality, she nearly had a difficult time processing the reality of what she had just accomplished and achieved.

    The phrase "You don't have to fetch me coffee" is one of the most powerful moments in the movie, it impressed me the most. Many years later, when I was the boss on a movie set, a page offered to fetch me coffee. I repeated this word for word to him. Made me very proud to be part of this culture. That's the American dream, right there, and it worked for me! Sadly, America has been hijacked and devastated since then. Praise our corrupt politicians.

    I worked as a admin assistant in the computer department of corporate headquarters. I was responsible for all the Wang equipment and printers, training, troubleshooting,equipment orders plus all the secretarial duties for the directors and programmers. Grossly underpaid and title did not fit my job responsibilities. They gave the title to a male who was in charge of the mail room. After repeated requests were denied I went another route and career as a teacher. Learned my lesson.

    It does bother me somewhat that "making it seems to be defined only by one achievement, success in business. I think that at the end of your life you can look back and smile you have been a success no matter the way you did it. Westen society is so focused on material success I believe to its own detriment.

    I never thought about that but if your morning meetings are at 3 different places, how do you get there? Like- do they give you a business card to use or what? Or is " getting there " your responsibility?
