    TOEFL Listening - How to score high - 5 Tips
    I tell you my 5 top tips for getting a high score in TOEFL Listening. I scored 29 in TOEFL Listening and I was really nervous about it because listening is a challenge. It can be really hard because you must listen to a lot of information in the TOEFL and you cannot listen to it again, this means that you can only rely on your notes and memory when answering the questions. Therefore, you need a listening strategy in order to get a high TOEFL score.

    TOEFL LISTENING
    In TOEFL Listening you will listen to conversations and lectures in English. Usually, the listening tasks will be about topics that you encounter in a university setting. For example, there may be conversations between a student and a professor or a lecture about an academic topic. First, you listen to a task, after that you need to answer questions regarding this listening task. The questions in TOEFL Listening can be about the main point, a function of something, they can ask about details and much more. If you have the right strategy, you have everything you need to get a high score in TOEFL Listening.
    HOW TO WORK WITH THIS VIDEO
    1. Watch the video and make sure you understand everything.
    2. Download the summary.
    3. Use the summary for your TOEFL preparation.
    FYI
    The examples I use in the video and in the summary are made up by me.
    1) FOCUS
    In TOEFL Listening you do not need to understand everything. Yeah, that’s right! It's not necessary to get a high TOEFL Listening score. Your score does not depend on whether you understand everything but on whether you understand the important things. You only need to understand the information that is necessary to answer the questions correctly. In TOEFL Listening you will listen to a ton of information. If you try to understand everything this may even lower your score because you do not focus anymore which means you will not know the important information when answering the questions. This means that you must focus on the stuff that gets you points - ignore the rest! Now the crucial question is: how do you know what you need to focus on? Let’s have a look at the next tip.
    2) KNOW THE QUESTION TYPES
    In TOEFL Listening you will always get similar questions for a particular type of task. For example, usually there is a task where a student goes to see a professor. If you listen to such a conversation, it is probable that you will be asked why the student goes to see the professor. If you know that beforehand, you will be in a good position because when you listen to the passage you can already anticipate potential questions - and normally some of the questions you anticipate will be asked. This means if you know the types of tasks in TOEFL Listening you will be able to focus on the right things when listening.
    3) TAKE GOOD NOTES
    To get a high score in TOEFL Listening you must take notes in such a way that they help you to answer the questions correctly. What is really hard in TOEFL Listening is that you get so much information and you cannot listen to the stuff again, this means that you can only rely on your notes and on your memory . Your notes must contain the information that you need for the questions. Only write down keywords, use your own words, try to abbreviate words whenever possible and use symbols.
    4) CHOOSE AN ANSWER
    If you are unsure which answer you should choose, go with your gut. Do not skip the question.
    Better choose an answer you are uncertain with than no answer at all. You do not get penalty points in TOEFL Listening and there is always the possibility that you choose the correct answer. Take that chance!
    5) PRACTISE LISTENING
    To get a high TOEFL Listening score you must practise listening to spoken English. Take every chance you get: listen to English-speaking TV series, listen to the news in English. This will help you to get used to the language and especially to informal English which is really important because spoken English is a bit different from written English.

    I’m loving your explanations. You are so incredible. Thank you very much for these classes. My main problem is bad notes taking. I am able to listen and understand everything you are saying but if I have to stop to write anything, I can’t listen anymore. So I lost many points of the listening... hey guys the first time i took this test i got a 86 which really disappointed me. and my listening section was 17. so what i found out was that whenever i try to take notes in the listening part, i can’t fully concentrate on the lecture. the second time i took toefl, i got 27 without taking ANY notes, this really works guys. just imagine the whole lecture/conversation in your head.

    • @juva

      Hey Azim, that's so amazing that you improved your TOEFL Listening score this much, congratulations! You're right, if you write down too much, it happens easily that you get distracted and then you miss essential information. Nevertheless, I took notes in TOEFL Listening because I think I wouldn't have been able to remember everything that had been said. But I used a specific strategy that allowed me to keep my focus while taking notes. That's so awesome that you were able to remember everything, respect!

    • @datteldiskussion4992
      @datteldiskussion4992 2 года назад +3

      I also no longer take any notes anymore. Most questions are so general that you can answer them through active listening alone and those that aren't are so randomly hyper-specific that the relevant info wouldn't be in my notes anywhere. Got 29 on my last test run on toefl Bank.

    To tell the truth, you are amazing as TET prep. Initially, the TOEFL exam has got I kind of luck. I can prove what I say using my score in the TOEFL reading section. I took the first one yesterday, and I scored 24. Despite this, in the past 3 hours, I took a new one, and the result was 11 out of 30. This massive change in my score has shocked me. I am embarrassed to say that. However, what I want to say is that may you are so lucky then you are going to see an easy passage. I am talking about a practice test from the TST Premium course. Ultimately, I will be glad to see your opinion, JUVA.

    Hi Juva, thanks for your videos, they are really helpful. It seems I have no problems with note-taking and understanding the context, but I still make about 5-8 mistakes. Almost all of them occurred because I did not read the question/answers carefully or listened to that part carefully. My reading section has these problems, too. Can you suggest something I can do to raise my attention and avoid this kind of mistakes?

    • @juva
      @juva  3 года назад +3

      Hi Elina, I'm so glad they are helpful to you :). I know what you are talking about. The questions in TOEFL Reading and Listening are formulated in a way that if you slightly misread them, you will pick the wrong answer. I'd recommend this: When you read a question always remind yourself to read carefully. Always think: Is there a word that is easy to miss? You must do this with every question. If you practice for a while, this will become an automatic process and you will not make this mistake in the TOEFL test. Hope this helps :)

      @@juva Hi Juva 😀 I did it online, I made a mistake at the beginning, reading section🤭 I didn't follow the time and I answered 17-18 questions and left only 5min or less.
      I put too much attention to reading so carefully the question, the answers and the passages... There were 30 questions.
      I did 17-18, then in the last 5min I just by intuition put some answers on 5 questions and the time end.
      So I had unfinished 5-6 questions. 😂is not funny but, yes, I made a mistake with the Time.
      Listening section was ok, I used some notes, but later the marker fell on ground so on 1-2 questions I didn't use notes, but was ok, I focused even better on what they are talking about and tried to memorize important things,
      Then I had 10 min break.
      After that I needed again to show my room and desk to the proctor.
      Speaking session - ohhh, again mistake.. 🤭😂 when I answered on one question, I talked 30 seconds, there left 25-20 seconds and I didn't knew what more to say... Was uncomfortable situation. (Generally, didn't had much time to prepare, only 4 days, and instead I to practice more with TOEFL, I distinguished my english, then only 1-2 days I used for the TOEFL preparation),
      But my strongest section was the Writing.
      Of course I will lose a lot points because I didn't answer on 5 questions(empty), 5 answers by intuition, then I don't know if the rest was correct.. (On Reading).
      And other mistake with speaking when in Only one answer I lost my mind for 20 seconds. Then I said Ummm, yes, that's why.. And tried add some more words with little giggles) 🤭 uhh.
      I hope to get satisfying result which can be enough to candidate for university abroad😀🍀 I will get the results after some days...
      But I memorized some things from you and they helped me a lot for this short time when I prepared😀🍀thank you!
      P. S. my exam continued 4 hours.

    • @juva
      @juva  Год назад

      If you take the TOEFL in the test center, you will be provided with headphones. If you take the TOEFL Home Edition, you are not allowed to use headphones. Hope this helps!

      Hi, welcome to the channel! :) Have a look at my TOEFL playlists and pick the videos you need. If you have any questions, put them in the comments, I'll be happy to answer them.

    Is it a good Idea to take notes in my own language?

    • @juva
      @juva  3 года назад +1

      I don't recommend taking notes in your own language. You will need to translate the information you listen to into your own language which costs time. When answering the questions you need to translate it again into English. I'd recommend taking notes in English because it's faster and also more helpful for answering the questions correctly.
