    TOEFL Speaking Practice Task 1
I answer a practice question for task 1 in TOEFL Speaking. The question I answer is a choice question. After that I give you tips how you can get a high TOEFL Speaking score in task 1. Getting a high score is no magic. If you practice speaking several times and if you know how to express your ideas, you can do it. Use this question to practice for task1 in TOEFL Speaking.

    FYI
The examples I use in the video are made up by me.
    1) Answer the question
In task 1 in TOEFL Speaking you must answer the question directly. If the question asks you which option is better you must decide for one option and talk about that. Do not say that sometimes one side is better and sometimes the other. This is not what you are asked to do in a choice question in task 1 in TOEFL Speaking. You are asked to pick a side and explain why you think that side is better. It is very important that you answer the question directly because this way you show that you understand what the question asks you to do.
    2) Use a template
I highly recommend using a TOEFL Speaking Template. Using a template can improve your TOEFL Speaking score considerably. First, a template gives your answer structure. Second, a template usually contains a broad range of vocabulary which will result in a high TOEFL Speaking score. Third, a template saves you a lot of time because you do not need to think about how to start your sentences. If you memorize a Speaking template, you already know that and you can focus on the task at hand. This is extremely important because you do not have much time in TOEFL Speaking. If you want to have a TOEFL Speaking template have a look at the one I created for my TOEFL Speaking task 1. You can find the link above.
    3) Structure your answer
When doing TOEFL Speaking task 1 you should use a specific structure. Use an introduction, a transition, and after that state your two reasons and examples. Stick to this structure because this way you make sure that you deliver a well-structured and clear answer. This will improve your TOEFL Speaking score considerably. A TOEFL Speaking template can help you structure what you are saying. Make sure that you memorize the Speaking template before taking the TOEFL so that you will not have to think about the structure during your TOEFL test. Use this structure during your TOEFL Speaking preparation so that you will feel comfortable in the TOEFL test.
    4) Use transitions
In TOEFL Speaking task 1 using transitions can boost your score significantly. Transitions boost your TOEFL Speaking score for several reasons. First, they show that you have a broad range of vocabulary. Second, they help you deliver a well-structured answer. In short, transitions are a great tool to get a high TOEFL Speaking score! Use transitions when practicing for TOEFL Speaking. If you get used to them during your TOEFL preparation, it will be a lot easier for you to remember and use them in the TOEFL test.
    5) Use synonyms
In my answer for task 1 in TOEFL Speaking I used a lot of synonyms. Using synonyms improves your TOEFL Speaking score considerably because it shows ETS that you know a lot of different English words. Try not to repeat words, find different words instead. I recommend practicing this during your TOEFL preparation.
    6) Choose the easier side
When answering task 1 in TOEFL Speaking choose the side where you can find more reasons and examples. There is no correct answer. ETS is only interested in how you speak in English. Therefore, you should pick the side that is easier for you. You want to feel comfortable when doing task 1 in TOEFL Speaking. Choosing the easier side helps you delivering a good answer in TOEFL Speaking task 1.

#6 is absolutely the most important point of all. After trying few practices, it’s more than obvious that 15 seconds of preparation time is incredibly short for this task (I can’t even do this in my native language if I’m totally honest). You just quickly come up with 2 or 3 reasons to support the choice, which also convinced me that using the template is quite essential. Otherwise you’re gonna stutter a lot while answering. Thank you again!

Thank you for this, it's very useful. However, one problem I have is that I have trouble coming up with reasons. For example, the question about whether going outside at the weekend is better than staying home, I would spend the time I got for preparing my answer trying to think of reasons for why either side would be better, and of course, the time frame to do that is way too small. What are some tips you have to come up with arguments for your opinion so quickly?

    • @juva
      @juva  3 года назад +4

I'm so glad it's helpful to you! I highly recommend thinking about your personal experience. This is usually the fastest way to come up with ideas. For example, think about your weekends: What do you do? Do you stay inside or do you go outside? When do you feel better? I'm sure that you can come up very quickly with two fantastic ideas why one or the other is better. Hope this helps :)

I would like to thank you for your great videos. At the beginning of my preparation, I was a bit overwhelmed with regard to the speaking and wiriting parts, but I quickly discovered your videos, which helped me tremendously. I couldn't manage the speaking part in any of the practice tests (especially because of the short preparation time), which is why I was very afraid of it in the test. In the end, I always remembered to structure my response and to use linking words and I finally managed to score 30/30 in the speaking part!!! A big thank you to you, your tips are amazing! ☺️

Hi Juva, thank you for great content that you provide ! .I have one question related to section answer choice. You mentioned that one answer must be chosen but "Official Guide to the TOEFL iBT Test, Sixth Edition" PAGE 166 stated that you could combine both answer if you choose them based on specific cases but you need to explain that. In the video task I could say that spending the weekend outside depends on the weather condition if it too cold I prefer go stay inside and because it will make me sick and if not I think going outside is the better choice because it will be good to my health. Am I right or missed understand it ? .

    • @juva

Hi Khalid, there may be several ways to answer this question. I'd recommend choosing one side because you don't have much time to deliver your answers and explain a lot. Choosing one side makes it easier to give a concise and well-structured answer. Hope this helps!

@@juva I did, I just find the toefl stupid.
Just did a praxis exam and scored 30 / 30 on the writing and listening section because I turned off my brain. With really thinking about the answers in 20 percent of the cases either the question is asked wrongly or there could be multiple correct answers.
Writing and speaking only tests if you are able to follow the toefl BS format and have nothing to do with actual language skills. Toefl is a soulless money grab and self sustaining industry. I can't wait for more institutions to accept the 50 bucks duolingo score ;)

Hi Prathibha, so great that you want to take the TOEFL! Don't worry, you can do this :). Have a look at my TOEFL Speaking playlist, you can find a lot of videos there that may be helpful to you, for example, the Speaking templates.
