"It appeared Washington was under attack": Inside the 1991 Washington military parade

- President Trump has requested that the military begin preparations for a military parade in the nation's capital, CBS News has confirmed. The last military parade was in 1991, when President George H.W. Bush marked the U.S. victory in the Gulf War with a military parade in Washington, D.C. Here's how CBS News correspondent Eric Engberg covered the day.
If you truly think a parade looks like an attack, you need to get out more.
WORD UP!!!
"Go touch grass NOW!!!"
if that was today: you would have a "counter-protest" (BLM, homosexual, pro-abortion, etc). the strong defense "peace through strength" is what brought our nation through 1945 and to "superpower" status.
now all these "subgroups" (BLM, etc) goals and objectives is to take this away from "those" that earned it.

I think it's fine to have a military parade. We are honoring our heroes; why do people not want that?
Ryan Liu because we’re not suppose to be authoritarian. Totalitarian dictatorships do these sort of parades all the time, their meant to stroke the ego of their most fanatical “patriots” to pledge loyalty to the state. Nobody’s freedom was at jeopardy in these wars. None.. you can respect the soldier but you have right to criticize his actions especially since taking orders is no excuse anymore. Just like what we did with the nazis.
KRANEO ART you stupid

“Totalitarian” cough France cough
The problem isn’t with this being a dictatorship move but, the true problem was, how much did this cost and what else would this money have been used for
KRANEO ART yeah but heres the thing. France has a parade like this every year. Would you consider france an authoritarian government?
How is this showing dictatorship. This is honnor and love for the people who will stand up and help us.
Mr. Sea Chicken a parade right after you’ve won a war to honor the returning men and women is different from a parade to show force. Dictators hold parades to show force.
sccrdude22 Stop being so pathetic...in no way would a modern day military parade cause a rise in dictatorship powers here in the U.S.
That Fella I didn’t say it would.
sccrdude22 You're comment implied it quite well though...
That Fella also a waste of money, isn't the military spending why we in a big dept and why we where going into another recession under bush administration. That parade money could of gone to the family's of that war. Trump just wants to show off his arsenal (which yes dictators also do)
You don't have to be authoritarian to appreciate your military. I don't know why people link these two together as if they are inseparable.
Because we are not going to act like a Militaristic dictatorship. it is a huge waste of money, if you want to play soldier enlist in the military.
@@meetmehalfway7982 Listen here jive turkey, I did server in the Army for 5 years. I don't consider myself militaristic because of it.
Second of all, it was a few tanks and aircraft and you're upset about the cost? Well if you're going to blow a gasket over that then go research how much money floods out to millions of illegals who get benefits from our government through the SNAP/TANF program.
A military parade does not give you the permanent title of a "militaristic dictatorship", this was the birthday celebration of America and who played a major part in securing that independence? The military, so a little appreciation is not THAT big of a deal. Get over yourself.
Without it, both of us wouldn't be talking. It wasn't only showing tanks and fighter jets. Alot of the parade was men marching down. Some dressed in different time periods, Revo/Civil/Spanish/WW1/WW2.Korean/Vietnam/Gulf

@INSANE_BANANA You can divide any time period like that. For instance, like 30% of the American colonials were loyalists. Much more in certain areas. But we obviously know who defines that era. Thus I think you know I was talking about the hippies. They dominated the culture in the '60s/'70s, for better or worse.

U.S: *holds parade*
People then: wow it's so awesome and respectful!
People now: *and I took that personally*
“It eats up the surplus of consumable goods, and it helps to preserve the special mental atmosphere that the hierarchical society needs. War, it will be seen, is now a purely internal affair. In the past, the ruling groups of all countries, although they might recognize their common interest and therefore limit the destructiveness of war, did fight against one another, and the victor always plundered the vanquished. In our own day they are not fighting against one another at all. The war is waged by each ruling group against its own subjects, and the object of the war is not to make or prevent conquests of territory, but to keep the structure of society intact. The very word "war," therefore, has become misleading. It would probably be accurate to say that by becoming continuous war has ceased to exist. WAR IS PEACE” - George Orwell
What do you mean? People took it personally back then too. They literally showed protesters
to be fair, i dont see a reason why trump needed a military parade. This was a celebration of a victory in Iraq, Trump couldn't achieve victory in his family, let alone a war.
Mrcoolguy the Russians the British and the French do a military parade every year in May on VE Day
@@JoeSmith-sx5gw I didn’t refer to the Russians or French or British or any other country. The simple fact is that America does not regularly conduct military parades. There is no yearly parade for any event. Usually there is only one which follows a military campaign (a successful one at that) and even then it’s rare.
Trump doing one without any significance behind it, makes it a case of the military being used as a political tool.
2:29 The fact The Patriot missile system got such big applause, and a mention in the news of the time makes sense since it was the debut of our birth of real sophisticated air defense and impacted the war and future conflicts so deeply.
Yeah this was probably our only major war where we were just clearly superior in everything. More so when it was considered that since we were fighting across the world against the worlds 4th largest military, many expected losses in the tens of thousands, instead we came home with only 300 compared to the around 30,000-50,000 enemies.
More so since the last major war was Vietnam, this was truly the most overwhelming and best victory the US could possibly have achieved
@@roy6907 I’m glad you mentioned Iraq was the 4th largest army and had pretty modern jets and aircraft, it was not like a super strong country fighting a super weak one, I personally believe we were so successful in that war because we were actually going to war in full force as hard as fast and as decisively as possible, where it seems soon after we took a “peacekeeper stance” and this is where American lives end needlessly

Meh_.Dooodles Noodles much rather give the Troops better health care and such rather than spend money on a parade.
Meh_.Dooodles Noodles You don't understand what it's like. We are so thankful we serve a country where the public generally holds us in high regard, but if we didn't have that, we would still fight anyways. It's what we volunteered to do. We don't like bloodshed, but we know that we are the option used when bloodshed is imminent against people somewhere. We are of course sent to some places we shouldn't go, but in the end, we hope to create more good than harm. Parades like this that let us be ourselves around civilians are something that helps us continue to do what we do. We feel so isolated fron the rest of the population, but just seeing people smile and wave to us and being able to do the same back really makes it all bearable.

Last military parade was 30 years ago. It's time to roll down the M1A2 Abram tanks down Washington. France had a parade for Bastille Day why can't America have one for July 4th? Not only is this parade a great way to recruit more people to join the military, but it shows the true might of the greatest superpower to every exist. It will only cost about $15 million compared to the $4.5+ trillion budget. This is nothing but a drop in the ocean. MAGA!
Omar Abuaita or give that money to the vets. Much better than pissing contest.
France has been doing Bastille Day parades since 1880. The US has a long history of civilian parades. I seriously doubt a military parade in Washington DC is going to attract anyone to the military.
$15 million could buy 5 state of the art MRI machines for VA hospitals. These would be usable for 10 years each, helping thousands of veterans and decreasing wait times. They could save thousands of lives. Compare this to a one day parade in DC for people to stroke their egos to.
+Proctor Sample $15 million compared to a $4.5 trillion budget its not like this is coming out of VA Affairs budget for our service members. In the FY 2019 Budget, President Trump proposed a total of $198.6 billion for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This request, an increase of $12.1 billion over 2018, will ensure the Nation's Veterans receive high-quality health care and timely access to benefits and services.
+Proctor Sample You would need about thirteen thousand two hundred military parades to equal the VA Affairs budget. Or three hundred thousand military parades to equal the total US budget for 2018. I think we can make just 1 military parade of Independence Day or Veterans Day.
I'm 14 and already have my mind set on joining the USMC as an infantryman, and I've also wanted to do a military parade to support our troops
It doesn't seem dumb to honor the ending of a War. If Trump was completely ending the second Iraq War, I don't think he would get as much push-back.
ConcordClark that’s my opinion on it. I voted for trump and a parade would be awesome to see no doubt but on the other hand we have been at war almost as Long as I’ve been alive I think the day we celebrate is the day we’re out of the Middle East
+Chris Rohls It really is remarkable that anti and pro-Trump voters like this us agree on this. We may not agree on much, but this is one good sign.
ConcordClark conflicts in Iraq are far from over. America’s job is not done.
ConcordClark the 2nd Iraq war ended in 2011. Everything else following is just against ISIS
I have no problem supporting troops. We won a war we celebrated. Do you really hate america that much that you hate supporting troops?
Ronniecorn the parade is a waste of time, a waste of money, and is nothing but a cover for Trump’s many scandals.
What war have we won at this date? I still see all those soldiers in foreign countries. There's nothing to celebrate. Trump just wants to fullfill his ego.
So not wanting to use the nation's service people as prop for Trump's ego trip is "hating the troops"? Classic strawman.
Ronniecorn it's not the troops it's the cause the troops are dying for like in vietnam and korea
Cesar Cruz They won the war against sadam, we still have troops over the world becuase we are a global superpower and if we dont maintain the presence then peace may be no more as we act as a detorant to the russians, chineese and any forgein military

dont really know why this popped up in my feed all of a sudden, but since it did, I think a good military parade on the 4th of July this year would be a cool thing. we don't do them very often, and it would be a good occasion for it. It would also show the very distinct differences between how we do our parades and how Russia does theirs. ours are more relaxed, with more of an emphasis on honoring the troops, while theirs are meant to show the superiority of the state and its military. Its quite telling, and a very distinct when compared side by side.
I was born in 1992 when I was about 6 or 7 in Vermont every June in a town about 15 miles away from where I grew up they have a Dairy Day Parade for quite a few years the parade had a M1 Abrams tank from the towns National Guard barracks that went through the parade route it was quite the sight to see, the parade is something that has been going on for nearly 60 years or more. Sadly the National Guard no longer has its two Abrams tanks I believe they where deployed and probably destroyed or still in the conflicts but they had to stop putting the tank in the parade because it wasn't the problem of it having to go in a straight line but the parade had to make some turns to go though the route and I guess it messed up the pavement too much when it turned.

Back when media had no narrative. They talked about everything, unbiased. A lot of “I thinks” when talking opinions.
Lol at the end of the clip, the reporter refers to the treatment of Vietnam veterans as a mistake. That’s a propaganda narrative right there. Media has been biased ever since it’s inception.
Yeah, back when media are just passing on information from their higher ups and conform with their editor without question lol. Did you even remember how the Iraq War started? Lmao
the difference is that, a war has not just ended
The entire war lasted a week. The overwhelming majority of Americans killed were killed in accidents. Saddam's army fled or surrendered at the mere thought of the U.S. military was coming. The U.S. army were taking in so many prisoners that they quickly became overwhelmed and actually began turning away Iraqis wanting to surrender. The biggest battle of the entire war was when the retreating Iraqi army commandeered any vehicle available, taxis. buses, private cars, commercial trucks, to get out of Kuwait. The U.S. sent in fighters and strafed the retreating convoy of civilian vehicles. Explosions and fire brought death to the defenseless exposed Iraqis. The First Iraqi War was the most lopsided joke of a war in U.S. history. George H.W. Bush was a committed globalist. He wanted the war to be a global effort. The left and it's media supported Bush because of his globalist stance. Bush pulled out all the stops with his military victory parade. In contrast, Trump has a couple of tanks that are static displays, and few military drill teams, a few military bands. And a flyover of a few planes and the Dems start crying over the cost.
Don’t no why this is such a crime
And the media made it seem like Trump wanting Tanks in a parade was the first time ever.
We should do more military parades
Always found it odd how we as such a patriotic country, don’t have military parades…
Because their kind of pointless
We don’t have a red square to maintain these parades every year and also
We aren’t the kind to showboat the Military Equipment in a parade nearly as often as others do
Why would people thing Washington was being attacked??? they are all American aircraft and solders
I prefer our messy parade that no one wanted to the terrifying spectacles that take place in Red Square and Tiananmen Square and Kim IL Sung Square.. we have cheers and respect and they display trucks with missiles on them... Like it's two totally different worlds. I also like that the US military would chew up even the Chinese military and yet we don't need to parade it around lol
2021 january 6. This is what an attack looks like
Russia - Z
America - V
Russia also uses V
Ah yes seeing on the news they’re hosting a military parade and thinking it’s a attack bruh
We need more parades
We need more healthcare
@@rowanwilliams1548 It’s called less estrogen in the water supply. Because every teenage girl is peeing birth control into the water supply. So we need to get these minors off this mood altering drug.
@@Bluesonofman i ment for vet dawg. Is it making the frogs gay too?
@@rowanwilliams1548 That’s a phrase that was taken out of context
@@Bluesonofman so what does that have to do with healthcare for vets who have been blown apart and blow people apart? All the while idiot civs saying bless you and i would have joined but....? Im tired of the bs man.
It’s a damn shame we don’t do this anymore!
Funds could be better spent on helping returning vets
In other words you hate the military because you never had a backbone strong enough to join up!
ProjecthuntanFish what?
ProjecthuntanFish I am confused on why you think this.
Troopar Pilentus Plays yup they can each get an .001 bonus
3monsters014 better then nothing :/
I was five years old when this happened, and I've got pictures from where I was able to sit in an Apache helicopter with the pilot giving me his helmet. It was kinda cool.
Man I wish our country still celebrated our military like then nowadays they deserve to be celebrated
Go visit an air show, war game, or other events, many large cities still host them annually. I'll be heading to an air show in just a few days, maybe not as big as national parades but its still fun to see.
Yeah those fuckers in the Kunduz Hospital really got what was coming to em
Celebration of victory over a miserable country?
Slow news day
How did America went from this to the Pride Parade…
Right? Its insane, absolutely unbelievable. Its such a massive improvement.
@@brandon9172Yeah why not abolish the military… bruuuh.
When they call a nighthawk a stealth bomber
I mean, it is.
2:22 Those are F-117 Nighthawks. They are stealth, but they aren't bombers. The F stands for Fighter (although it's actually an Attack aircraft lol). The B-2 Spirit (B is for Bomber) is likely what he thought he was talking about.
