i dont think people really appreciate how hard it is for 2 dummers to play in perfect unison is; what tre and larry achieve together in this song is amazing!
***** My Aunt's got flooded with two feet of water by Katrina. Then the Saints won the superbowl, and she said it was like Katrina never happened. Laissez les bons temps rouler!
I grew up on the East Coast during Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sand affecting my family and friends. This song really meant a lot during that time. Now I live in Maui and we just had a huge fire rip through our island destroying nearly the entire Historic Lahaina town. Displacing hundreds and destroying many businesses and livelihoods in the process. We're hurting right now, but this song gives me hope that help will come and help just like it has in past situations like this. If anyone sees this and wants to help, the Maui Mutual Aid Fund is actively working to help those in need and help rebuild. This only just happened, and more opportunities to help will arise, but this is organization is a good start!
I simply love this. It gives me goosebumps. The Green Day-U2 combination was just perfect and The Edge was the mastermind behind this production and engagement with the New Orleans rebuild community.
I remember this too damn well. My friend at that time was a truck driver and he was delievering goods to the gulf coast region, and he didn't wanna go alone,so I tagged along as a true friend would. When we arrived in the region,I was absolutley devestated and ashamed to be an American for the catastrophe which happened to the citizens of this region. They just didn't need food and water; they needed a damn hug. The people of the gulf coast and what I seen that day changed my life forever.
The Skids true Legends Richard Jobson and The late great Stewart Adamson wrote this brilliant song. U2 and Green day both done superb cover versions of this classic Skids tune.
3:00 goddamn that shot with the B-2A bombers gets me every time - one of the single most deadliest weapons of war of the time, used instead for humanitarian aid on the home front. A symbol of destruction becoming in a way a savior… It’s poetic beyond words
The Video is a what if scenario, the U.S. didn't actually respond or help like this at all. Honestly there is a lot of parallels between the Covid 19 response as well. Not enough help, most of it to late to do any good, and a lot of Americans dead for no real reason other then that our government sucks and doesn't really care.
Since 2 years I appreciate this song even more than before. My entire family was affected by the severe flooding in the Ahr Valley in Germany and the following morning a large part of the Bundeswehr was already mobilized and on its way to the rescue mission. This should have been done in New Orleans with the US troops as well.
An amazing song! I used to play it every morning while exercising or just waking up, to motivate me. I saw this song performed at Aloha Stadium and I am so grateful for that experience! I clearly remember seeing Billy Jo and family (early morning, tired kids) at SFO, lining up for the flight to Oahu from SFO
Years later, this video still makes me cry--because this is how it SHOULD have been. It's not how it was, but imagining a better future helps make that future possible.
Does anyone else just involuntarily break into tears when they see what SHOULD have happened? Can you imagine how much less suffering could have occurred? I am an adopted only child, and my birth family came from a small town nearby New Orleans. To this day I still wonder and worry what happened to them, if they were still there, but I'm too scared to reach out to them and hear something bad. RIP to those lives lost in this horrific tragedy, wherein the government showed their true colors. If this were really a nation "for and by the people", we would have made more of an effort to save those unfortunate citizens.
Hi I read your response to the video "The Saints are Coming"! & it's obviously your heart and thus your morals are in place! You're a rarity in these days~so please don't let anyone discourage your great responses and view of what should be....Cuz you're right on ! :-)
+anadryantontine You are stronger than you think! Be brave and contact your family. I am for your! Beautiful written. You are a true soul! Remember that you are strong, that your are fantastic no matter what other people say to drag you down.
I cannot watch this video without crying. I was Pascagoula, MS when the storm hit, those of us on the Mississippi Gulf Coast were ignored by the media and relief efforts. But I'm not angry about it. This storm affected all of us and it pisses me off that our boys were over fighting and dying for oil when they should have been here.
I know I’m 7 years late to the comment. But the skids (who made this song originally) still tour and sound amazing. Obviously it’s not the same style as this. But the skids sound amazing. I’ve seen them live twice and every time it doesn’t disappoint.
I love how the video ends with the tanks fading away, a hard hitting message right there in of itself. That's what the government could have done in order to help those in need but instead they kept them in Iraq fighting a colonialist war for oil. Green day and u2 don't get enough credit for their hard hitting political messaging like that. The video showcases a fantasy of where the government could have done a lot more to help, but in the end it didn't as the video shows via the ever so subtle last second with the fading tanks. Brilliant video.
My friend just shared this video with me. U2 is one of my all-time favorite bands. May we all be reminded about the power of helping each other when we come together like this.
I'm a veteran and an army reservists. And I gotta say, this video exemplifies how to best use our military. We have a big enough military that will pretty much keep our country from ever beign invaded. But the defense, -and aid- of the people should always be paramount for our government to realize and prioritize in their list of civic duties.
wow... this is a great song and vid guys.. i didnt know i still hold much emotion watching this. from a person who was directly affected by this, its truly put a stamp on ur life and make you appreciate the simple things in life. this is something that i, along with many, will never forget. i want to thank everyone who had helped us get back on our feet. special thank you to Green Day and U2!.
I remember being so emotionally overcome in how Green Day which gave the world American Idiot so generously corroborated with U2 to create this incredible song with one of the most moving patriotic videos I have ever seen. The video gets better with the sign at the end portraying Not as seen on TV! Thanks, U2 and Green Day for showing the world the sad American tragedy in New Orleans, and the heroic American troops that helped save and rescue the victims.
I was 15, and I still remember how enthusiastic I was when I heard my two favourite bands were working together! My dad loves U2 and he was so happy as well about this collaboration! ❤
This song was originally by The Skids. Their guitarist Stuart Adamson went on to form Big Country after the Skids, and in 2001 he commit suicide. May he rest in peace.
danielscissorhands U2 remain good friends with The Skids and got their blessing to do this. Plus they'd need permission to give the royalties to Music Rising.
Actually, the first line and tune is taken from a 1964 song called "The House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals. It's a brilliant classic, do give it a listen.

Beautiful! Faith in humanity restored when I hear this song. Those images of the armed forces. This is what life should look like. Helping others. Not fighting others.
I remember how big it was at the time to have a charity act from two of the most popular bands. Green Day was at its peak with American Idiot and how both bands achieve such a great collab was amazing. Sad how this song seems forgotten now (seeing some comments from 8 years ago!).
Two of my favorite bands gathering as one. This song is actually really neat , pay attention to the guitars, perfect sinyc. and the drumming. Awesome. Bravo!

As we were being escorted to figure it all out (without the people who were in my seats surrounded by hundreds of people who knew me (super fan) and bitched the cops out. Gleason blocked the ball. He blew his top to the guy when I explained he allowed the interlopers to remain. lol Still got gleason's autograph helmet when he heard what happened...
