I grew up on the East Coast during Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sand affecting my family and friends. This song really meant a lot during that time. Now I live in Maui and we just had a huge fire rip through our island destroying nearly the entire Historic Lahaina town. Displacing hundreds and destroying many businesses and livelihoods in the process. We're hurting right now, but this song gives me hope that help will come and help just like it has in past situations like this. If anyone sees this and wants to help, the Maui Mutual Aid Fund is actively working to help those in need and help rebuild. This only just happened, and more opportunities to help will arise, but this is organization is a good start!
I remember this too damn well. My friend at that time was a truck driver and he was delievering goods to the gulf coast region, and he didn't wanna go alone,so I tagged along as a true friend would. When we arrived in the region,I was absolutley devestated and ashamed to be an American for the catastrophe which happened to the citizens of this region. They just didn't need food and water; they needed a damn hug. The people of the gulf coast and what I seen that day changed my life forever.
The Video is a what if scenario, the U.S. didn't actually respond or help like this at all. Honestly there is a lot of parallels between the Covid 19 response as well. Not enough help, most of it to late to do any good, and a lot of Americans dead for no real reason other then that our government sucks and doesn't really care.
Years later, this video still makes me cry--because this is how it SHOULD have been. It's not how it was, but imagining a better future helps make that future possible.

Does anyone else just involuntarily break into tears when they see what SHOULD have happened? Can you imagine how much less suffering could have occurred? I am an adopted only child, and my birth family came from a small town nearby New Orleans. To this day I still wonder and worry what happened to them, if they were still there, but I'm too scared to reach out to them and hear something bad. If this were really a nation "for and by the people", we would have made more of an effort to save those unfortunate citizens.
