I had been to Attari Border one evening 5 years back. Before the National flags were to be lowered there will be a ceremony, which is featured here. Much before the ceremony happen,the stands on Indian side will be packed with spectators. Public Address system will be belting out patriotic song and on the road,public will be dancing wildly. The number of spectators are much less in comparison on the Pakistan side and hence their response will be more subdued. Indian soldiers and their turnout is smart. Pakistan soldiers are physically more endowed. Commands from both sides are sharp and booming. Once the ceremony begins,the atmosphere is electric. Army drill, their counter to Pakistan soldiers and cheer from the crowd etc is a heady experience and gives one goose pimples. After the ceremony,flags are lowered for safe keeping,gates on both sides of the border will be closed, and spectators will rush to their vehicles to go to Amritsar. Before seeing this ceremony, I had felt that it is a Circus,a jingoism,avoidable provocation etc. But one visit,the entire perception changed. Proud to be an Indian. Salute to Indian Army.
This makes me think of the intricate dances of exotic birds, especially with the beautiful plumed headwear. Fascinating to watch and very entertaining. I get the impression the guards quite enjoy performing it. 😊👏
