    Some clarifications about ciorbă de burtă: it is not cooked intestines, it literally means belly soup, so it's the stomach that is the main ingredient. Nothing is fermented, we don't cook that way. The sour taste was either vinegar or smântână (sour cream). We also use garlic or peppers to cut that heavy taste of the dish, so that was a correct observation you made. All in all, ciorbă de burtă is not for everyone, but it is not that bad either 😅

    Some clarifications. I know people have said it, but I want to just synthesize.
    Ciorba de burta, tripe soup, is not made from pork and they're not intestines. It's made from cow stomach. Nothing is fermented. We just add some vinegar and garlic and sour cream. I've heard that sour cream tastes a little different in the USA. So think of it as a fatter yogurt.
    Most of the soups in Romania are sour. We don't like sweet soups, in general, with a few exceptions. Actually the word "ciorba" is often understood as "sour soup". The sour taste can be from vinegar, lemon juice, lemon salt, etc. Sometimes we may add some pickled cabbage in beans soup, for example, but that's in winter time.

    • @HeresGoodTravel
      @HeresGoodTravel  Год назад +4

      Amazing! Yeah even the ham and bean soup had a bit of sour flavor too! We loved that! It’s so interesting I can only think of one sour soup in the states. I could definitely sop how the combination of fatty cream and tart broth would be something to be craved. I think next time I will try the chicken version until I can get courage to eat the tripe again. Thank you kindly for watching our video and for the helpful info. Cheers!

    The tripe soup (ciorbă de burtă) is made from beef stomach, scalded and washed with vinegar to remove its strong smell, it's made with smântână (a sourer and fattier sour cream), you must "prepare it" before eating, add a spoon of white vinegar, some ground pepper and a spoon of ... sour cream 😆 maybe a small pepper also .... try next time a "ciorbă de pui a la grec" or "ciorbă de vită" with a spoon of sour cream in it 😀

We would’ve eaten more at the Christmas market too but we felt intimidated because we didn’t know what anything was called and everyone seemed to know what they were doing. I rediscovered tripe soup lately, but I only like it from certain restaurants, as the taste can vary significantly due to the recipe. So maybe you will like it better from somewhere else, who knows? You don't HAVE to like it, personal taste is personal taste. The point of exploring is to find what you do like.

    I watched some of your videos and I really love the honesty and how nice you guys are! You even visited some places I never visited and I was born in Bucharest... but i'm mostly living at my computer...
    And how could anyone here mugg you? Seeing you so nice, they might take you out for some beers instead! The pick pocketers exist, but they prefer crowded busses and places, not rainy weather :))
    I wanted to point out that the "Ciorba de burta" is made with beef belly and boiled beef bones, not from pork. It's not fermented and it could be gross if not cooked properly. I didn't liked it before I tasted one that was really well made. It's not an easy dish to make and as a Romanian, I wouldn't try it at "Ciorbarie" they are some sort of soup fast food made for corporate employees. Not a real traditional place. If you ever get the chance to come back to Romania, try it at "Restaurant Potcoava", a place where our former presidents love to eat (and no, it's not an expensive place, it's just a secret and good taste place). Or give me a message so I will ask my dad to cook it for you at no cost. Also, I wanted to point regarding the other video, Goulash is not a romanian dish.

Thanks for the restaurant recommendation, we will add this to our list for our next. Is it but a home cooked meal sounds even better! We will be sure to reach out if we head back that way! tripe soup is my favorite, maybe it's an acquired taste and we're more used to eating organs and stomach of animals but it's so savory in the best of ways, a little sour, a little creamy, the flavor of the meat(the stomach has a bit of meat too).
    should definitely try to go visit places not all other youtubers/tourists go to in Romania and even in Bucharest, because a lot of those places are the most kitchy ones(like for example Bran castle for me is not worth it, see it from outside and go to the mountain villages nearby instead(Magura/Pestera, Sirnea) beautiful nature, a taste of traditional, trails that cross these villages and offer panoramic views of 2 mountain ranges and the hills, some other cute easy trails. Around Zarnesti there's cute places and the town is a better example of small quaint old transylvanian town, with a car you can easily go to other villages and places between Brasov and Sibiu. You could also go to Sfanta Ana lake, only volcanic lake in Romania and very beautiful, lots of bears.
    In Bucharest I always tell people to try and go walk the streets in the old neighborhoods with houses like in Cotroceni area, left and right of Victoria avenue, left and right of Aviatorilor/Dorobanti, the old town/unirii is maybe the worst part. Oh and Caru' cu bere restaurant looks great but it's not the best food because of how touristy it is. October is the best month, weather tends to be nice and the autumn colors start to pop. I'd avoid June to August, our summers have become unbearable, it's over 33-35 almost every day and a lot of the time it's even worse

      We definitely want to plan a return trip to Romania and hit some different cities as well. These are such helpful tips. We will be sure doing corporate them when we finally get to book our return visit. I think next time when we try this sour soup will try the chicken variety and and work our way back up to the tribe version. I can see how it is addictive and we will try at least three times.
