  • Experiencing lower back pain which is interrupting your sleep? Experiencing hip and tummy pain? Is this especially painful because you're pregnant?
This video outlines two simple ways of helping to minimise pain in your back, hip or tummy whilst sleeping.
Lower back or hip pain can be present during pregnancy or at any times during our lives. It can be uncomfortable and difficult to find a position to sleep in when our muscles are angry or fatigued from the pain.

In pregnancy as you gain weight for the growth of your baby a lot of work can be placed on the lower back and hips to help support your body against the weight of your baby so you don’t fall over forwards as you get heavier. Sleeping with one leg over the top of the other can cause strain or stretch on muscles that are already angry which causes pain. Having a pillow between your legs and ankles can help keep your hips in a neutral position and allow you to sleep pain free.
    Imagine the sweet dreams!
As your tummy gets bigger as baby continues to grow when you’re laying on your side, gravity can pull your tummy towards the bed. This places strain on your side abdominal muscles to counteract the pull of gravity. Having a pillow to support can place your belly in a neutral position and allow you to sleep pain free.
If you have any pain or discomfort at all seek guidance from your women's health physiotherapist and check out our free ebook on maintaining and restoring your pelvic floor at the link below:

This is fine for that hip but sleeping on one side makes the side stuck on the bottom that's pressed into the bed start to ache too. So I wake every two-three hours and flip myself to the other side, rotating out which hip to relieve pain on. Best thing I've found so far is to find good workout/stretching videos, safe for pregnancy, and keep the muscles in shape, no matter how tired you are. I noticed when I did light exercises everyday and stayed limber, I slept slightly better at night. It also relieved any daytime hip pain from walking (waddling). Also, I cannot stress enough how much a yoga ball (also called exercise or birthing ball) works. Do some hip rotation exercises on it everyday and all those tight muscles loosen and pop right away. Plus, it helps get your pelvis and baby's position ready for delivery when the time comes. Walmart $14. 👍

I am currently 24 weeks pregnant and I have been suffering with hip pain since the beginning of the second trimester. I have tried sleeping with a pillow in between my leg and three different maternity pillows, it just seems like as soon as I fall asleep and my body is at rest the hip pain starts. I can’t go 2 hours sleeping without hip pain that wakes me up. I am so sad 😞 I’ve searched the internet for a solution and I can’t find one.

Hi Ntsiki, it might be worth seeing a physio to help with your movement patterns and muscle tensino around your hips. You can also check out this video with some stretches that can also help with pubic pain: ruclips.net/video/1y9okhEvli0/видео.html

This video has helped a lot, my wife is 32 weeks pregnant, goes through a lot of back pain, due to which it becomes difficult for her to turn left/right while sleeping. Changing side also becomes very tough due to the extra belly weight that simultaneously shifts and reclines as soon as you turn a side.
