Oh man, This studio is amazing SSL and Neve, AMS, Distressors ...I would lose myself. The guy seems humble and he really knows his stuff!!! Thank you for the video!!!
Fantastic space, I lived around the corner in the 80's and was fortunate to spend a fair amount of time recording and just hanging out with my mate "Worth" who Managed the place for Dave Stewart & Annie Lennox,,, GREAT MEMORIES!!
Great to see some of the old valve gear still being used. Worked at Trident in the late 70's and can appreciate that unique sound. Good to see Paul as a custodian.
worked in both rooms often in the 00s including Beth orton and culture club... thought both rooms were mint... brave to rip them out. also desk in the live room? each to his own lol. so glad it's still a studio though... one of my favourites.
having the desk in the live room is a funny one, i can see how it could work but i suppose ironically with a desk like that you really want to be making use of the EQ and effect sends etc during tracking, so arguably it's even more important to hear the tones clearly as they're going down than if it was just a 'clean channel' sort of setup.
I guess it was 2002 I went to London . Had a little book with studio addresses and one day decided to visit this studio, that's just to look at the building from outside at Crouch Hill. I played music on streets, cut a vinyl single in Amsterdam and finished sound engineering college there. Anyway ,came there .It looked scary and awesome already from outside . I rang a bell .After some confusion about who i was (obviously no one of importance) the guy opened the door . Hello can I talk to the manager of the studio . He's not here . Ehm can you give him this record . He politely took it and i went away. The other day i was playing Hang (a swiss percussion instrument ) in Denmark Street in front of the music store . Lots of people asking me whats that because it was new back then. I stopped playing, my hands hurting and than came a guy with a guitar asking me have I ever heard of Pink Floyd it was an ex a member of Dream Academy . The whole situation got a bit weird when he said that David Gilmour produced some of his music or that he was working on something with him and that he wanted me to come to Church studio for a payed session . So i went . We went to a back door to a smaller studio . I played Hang and electric bass guitar on that session . Afterwards Guys took me to a dinner , payed me 80 pounds . I left England and to this day i don't know what i was working on . Living currently in Croatia .
Did you know there is ready a Church studio in Tulsa, ok originally owned by Leon Russell. Musician's such as Eric Clapton, George Harrison, BB King, Freddie King, the GAP band, JJ Cale, and the list goes on with souls that have recorded in the Churc studio in Tulsa, ok. This Church sound pretty cool as well.
i wanna know how the sound doesnt travel through those windows when the muswell hill bus goes past! seems to be no soundproofing over them. i have the possibility of moving my studio into a ex-church sideroom but it's also near a road and that's why i came to check this studio out. anyone know?
When copious amounts of cannabis rules one's judgement, over time, things become either more apparent or less apparent. As one thing is certain, true innovation and paradigm shifts derive from out of the thick plumes of the resulting contemplation. Having the control room in the live room and everything accessible at arm's length is certainly a stoner-derived legend, if I ever heard one. To know the actuality is to book a session and experience it first hand.
Daniel Startek those are sugar skulls Nothing "evil" or "satanic" about those. In my culture we use them for "day of the dead" right around Halloween time in the US We celebrate the dead instead of dressing up in creepy costumes to scare people.
Fair play...I think this is the worst planned out big money studio I've ever seen. Nobody talking about the elephant in the room? The control room is in the live room? Comedy gold. The interviewers poker face was 10/10.
Ethan Frantz A monitoring/control room in the same room as the drums isn't clever. I don't care what he did before. That's getting too cocky. Perhaps lazy. I bet in a few years the setup will change. "Sorry Addelle, can you do that again? You could hear my chair creak and phone vibrate". When you try and hold in a fart doting a take know you've made a mistake.
I strongly disagree. It may not be ideal, but it obviously works quite well for him. Do what works for you. Epworth is one of the best producers in today's music. Dude has a gorgeous EMI Neve and some of the best gear around. He works with the biggest artists. The consistency of quality work he puts out is fantastic. You don't get that by being cocky or lazy
Ethan Frantz you said it may not be ideal. You were right. He winged it buying a building from a friend and probably got boxed in by buying a historic site and not being able to knock down/expand walls due to getting a funky vibey building. He spent a fortune and had to settle with the desk in the middle of the performance room. How are you supposed to hear the true sound of a snare, kick, amp without isolation? It's stupid. The cost will trickle down to the band. He'll have to record/playback then listen to mic placement. Not do it the usual way. Time is $$$

Lol distressors
Amazing! Thanks again soundonsound! Speaker face at 4.38

one of the best (if not the best) and forward thinking producers of this century
Great video thank you so much guys. Paul is a legend 💪🏾
oooooh my god this voice
Really enjoyed this. Great interview.
Brilliant clip .... just came across it now in 2019.
Me too
Awesome studio. Love the no-control room; sometimes the glass is a wall to creativity.
Great watch, thanks for that!
Inspiring fella
Bucket List = I want to record at The Church Studios once before I go.
Amen
:)

Yep, you've gotta be your own person

nice! amazing space... What's up with big shot engineers and skulls? what's the common thread or connection? I wonder
I have calaveras in my studio as well, although I am far from a big shot. I have always had a fondness for them.
i cycle past it twice a day, hope i have a reason to go in one day!

MADONNA and her upcomming new album bought me here 😀👑
Sweet place, i'd love to record there.
Why he was interviewed by Ed Sheeran ?
el mejor
You can call me fake but no lies my dad is friends with Paul epworth I know it sounds crazy but it is very true
Ok
David Grey is awesome!
Similar to Sylvia Massey's studio
that face is fine
This is fantastic; I enjoyed all the retro fetish porn! John Storyk does amazing work.
Jon Snow, is that you?
The hum is very annoying.
It's very different to logistic. Ahh the mixing studio is a instrument important in the music. If being someone gender musical.
Huh?!
Great Studio, but those skulls have to go.
lol !
What's with the goofy looking interviewer and the cranium accessories?
Daniel Startek those are sugar skulls

If he can make it work, it works
His music is fantastic, his production is consistently top notch. A lot of people record in one room.

The presenter had the personality of a lamp post. Rubbish. A good interview would have brought out shed loads more info instead of being very boring !
Just because he did it’s cool that’s is not a good space for a studio
Thats a perfect place
