He is not only a phantastic player and great teacher - also seems to be a heck of a nice guy without any diva-attitude. He doesn't try to be hip or funny at any cost. He simply likes to share what he loves: His music. Johnny is definately the type of guy you want to drink a beer with.
Johnny was BORN for this guitar pickin' stuff,,,,and I really respect him ,,,cause he's just one way,,,,a real good guy 24/7,,,,wish there were more people like him on the planet,,,
There are people that can play well and there are people that teach well, Johnny is the one guy that can do both extremely well. He is a true guitar hero!
I'm 65 and have had a serious problem with my hands for over 20 years. I was unable to play guitar. I finally got my hands back and saw a Johnny video and ran out and bought a guitar and listening to every word Johnny can offer to me!! Very sweet manner and good ole boy ramble to him!! Thank you Johnny from Costa Rica.
That's awesome you could solve this problem and keep rocking. I've had an issue with my ulnar nerve 5 years ago and only now I'm slowly recovering by playing easy bass guitar. I still got painful cramps when I pick up my guitar... really frustrating :(
Rarely can you say that someone is simply the best because it is so subjective....but I think Mr Hiland may be the master of the entire country rock bluegrass blues rockabilly styles, period
Damn I have become a big Johnny Hiland fan over the last few weeks. I never cared much for modern country music but love outlaw, and the resurgence of the outlaw style these days has lead me to players like Johnny. Love it
the ''crazy'' thing is this man can play any style from jazz to serious shred and never break a sweat....a true genius who seems like a genuinely nice guy........refreshing.
+GuyNoirxyz take the word 'country' out of your sentence and I agree completely!! wow! Watch his video with Sammy Hagar at Tahoe Wabo. Yep, he has the rock stuff covered as well!
A king, helpful unassuming musician paying it forward-truly deserves his gift, his respect, and every accolade that comes his way, unlike some of the prima donnas who wanna be center stage, but possess about one tenth of his ability!!!
Johnny you are exceptional one great teacher and I love the natural easy way it unfolds just marvelous thank the Lord for such a wonderful man who wants to help others.
JOHNNYS SUCH AN EXCELLENT PICKER IT'S REALLY HARD TO TRY AND SHOW WHAT COMES SO DAM EASY TO HIM !! I'VE TRIED TO TEACH A FEW FRIENDS WHO WANTED TO LEARN GUTIAR AND FOUND MYSELF GROPING WHEN TRYING TO SHOW THESE STYLES IN SLO MO !!
I have no idea how Johnny Hiland popped into my suggested clips, but I am so grateful he did! I do not play guitar, not even learning, but I could watch and listen to him all day. Outstanding. Thanks Johnny!
This kindly, fun-loving and pleasant man is one of the finest guitar slingers on Planet Earth, and don't let his down-home manner fool you: Johnny is a world-class talent who can play just about anything - a guy some pretty heavyweight people have called the finest all-around guitar player alive. A worthy heir to the late Danny Gatton.
There is nothing cooler than being passionate, positive, and a polite person in the modern day. Johnny seems to carry all three traits exceptionally well. He ain't half bad on that guitfiddle either.
Johnny, I love your pickin. I'm a rockabilly fan from way back when it originated. When I actually picked up a guitar and learned a bit on it that is what I played, and Rockabilly is what I play to this day. You are so personable I would love to meet you. Keep rockabilly alive! (Slacker G Guitar Skills)
SO helpful to see Johnny moving away from the easy A chord & barring all the way across in B. I'm using his experience & expertise to apply that down in G for the sake of vocal comfort. Thanks, Johnny!
Git inspired with Johnny Hilland. Been a metal and blues player all my life. Trying to transition to country music. Not a easy task. Been listening to a lot of Jerry Reed lately ( God rest his soul) and just today looking for Dobro instruction I happen upon Mr. Hiland showcasing the Reeves Space Cowboy 100 watt head. Or something to that affect and I almost tripped on my guitar cable. Totally ripping, totally captivating, totally inspired. Thanks Johnny Hilary. You’re my new guitar hero!
Johnny's right, that riff is a hard thing to play with the double bass notes! It took a couple of days and a lot of practice to get it so I can do it consistently, now I have to speed it up and learn to move it around like he does. What a talented guy!
I have always been of the opinion that those who are gifted with God given talent should share and teach their talent to those of us who are less gifted. Itzhak Perlman, for decades has shared his talent with those less fortunate in talent. Johnny Hiland carries on this tradition with a wonderful set of videos but he does it in a way that is geared for even a beginner. I am very obliged to Johnny for this and I am certain anyone learning this technique is as well!!
Good stuff, Johnny. I can't imagine how much dedication and practice it took to each your level, but you've given a tremendous amount of your life to music and you make it look so simple! Thanks for the lesson.
Great seeing ya Johnny...I just wanted to let you know that the Chapman ML3 guitar you tossed in the Dumpster last summer that my grandson recovered has found its way into the hands of a12 year old battling leukemia ....thanks Johnny,
dickfagsandmotherfuc Gus won the school talent show last May playing the Chapman ML-1 guitar. He's in a band with some buddies doing great and they're all hoping to meet Chapman some day.
Johnny, I'm in maine and follow you as much as I can, I'm from the west texas area and love country music. I love your style of guitar playing, ive been trying to play it for years now off and on. I would be more than greatfull to see you play in maine and maybe shake your hand to. thank you for your time and all the great videos you do. I'm you're biggest fan
Oh mate you have just unlocked the secret for me!!!! i've been thinking about it as notes instead of beating out a rhythm to fit the notes under it. Respect.
99 thumbs down??? What a bunch of maroons. Gotta' be children learning death metal. They'll grow up someday, hopefully. Johnny's so amazing when he teaches. He'll be jammin' and teachin' one method and throw in licks out of nowhere... riffs he's been playing comfortably, naturally all through his career. Then! As he's noodling, he'll stop and explain every detail of those incredible nuggets that assist his lesson. The guys a gift. Thanks Johnny.
Apple needs to create a low wattage shock to punish people who give videos like this thumbs down. Like a shock collar but for phones to teach animals to behave.
I agree how can anyone thumbs down or dislike this guy he's absolutely phenomenal super clean and super fast very technically proficient anyone who thumbs down this guy I'm quite sure they couldn't play a cigar box guitar
Thankyou Johnny, from sunny England :-D well it feels sunny now after watching this vid! A whole new realm of fun on the guitar. Put my Telecaster back together this week after blowing the dust off the various bits and pieces so I could start playing some blues and beyond. What a great inspiration your are to keep me going.
Your talent is amazing, and your teaching even better. You make me happy every time I see you play or watch one of your lessons. Thanks so much for your time and talent!
Back in the Days Clapton became famous playing it at Johnny Hilands beginners level. Simple but not so easy to master as it seems. Hiland is a true Guru.
You dog you, the way you roll that bass line is too cool, makes me laugh so much fun in your playing. Plays like a boss, with so much authority and commitment, love it. JH is one of my all time favs.

That part make me smile too. It just sounds fun, but not the way it sounds when I try it lol. I've decided to take on hybrid picking and its so alien to my right hand, but so satisfying when I do get some clucking to happen. Practice practice I suppose lol.
Honestly, not a fan of country music but watching Johnny teach some country guitar techniques and licks makes my interested in practicing these routines.
Johnny, you are my newest guitar hero and teacher. Chicken pickin' has no more articulate spokesperson. Thanks for unlocking all these doors -- how else would any normal mortal figure this stuff out? I'm not saying I can do it, but I can at least see how it's done. To work!
As far as I can tell this is a sixteen minute two second one-take video with no edits. What a guy
Honestly, how can anyone dislike the way this man plays. Johnny is a top shelf player and world class.
Because they cannot play half as good as this legend - that is all they are good at: clicking!
He is also a very humble person (L)
9100 people can't be wrong!
He is not only a phantastic player and great teacher - also seems to be a heck of a nice guy without any diva-attitude. He doesn't try to be hip or funny at any cost. He simply likes to share what he loves: His music. Johnny is definately the type of guy you want to drink a beer with.
+Fitzliputzli23 He is also very articulate and thorough in his explanations.
Worked with him several times. He is authentic and humble - exactly as you see him here.
I could not have said it better myself. John is a class act...
Johnny was BORN for this guitar pickin' stuff,,,,and I really respect him ,,,cause he's just one way,,,,a real good guy 24/7,,,,wish there were more people like him on the planet,,,
and he is definately a guy, i would do everything to help him out of every "unlucky" situtation.
There are people that can play well and there are people that teach well, Johnny is the one guy that can do both extremely well. He is a true guitar hero!

what was disabling your hand ? carpal tunnel ? arthritis? nerve damage ? tennis elbow syndrome ?
Yeah, and how did it get fixed?
Pura vida! Saludos de México

I have met Johnny, informally, a few times, and he is a super nice man. He is as nice as he is a fine guitarist. A real guitar hero

Love it!...good to see Johnny Vegas making it in the music industry!
I love your southern dialect, and your groovy touch as well
Spoke to Johnny once at a Pennsylvania guitar show. As down to earth as they get. Great player, too.
Johnny's right, that riff is a hard thing to play with the double bass notes! It took a couple of days and a lot of practice to get it so I can do it consistently, now I have to speed it up and learn to move it around like he does. What a talented guy!
