  • Go to countryguitarchops.com for the tab and jam tracks for this guitar lesson to help you learn how to play Workin Man Blues, played similar to how James Burton played it on the Merle Haggard recording. Check out the many other free lessons there too.
This is how I play one of many various lead guitar solos that I would play over the Working Man Blues type progression country guitar style. I hope you enjoy the instruction I've given here. You can find the tab along with a full length fast and slow jam track on my website. Thanks, Ken Carlson

I've been a guitar player for 40 years, doing country. For a beginner, the double stops might be challenging, but you do this in a way that makes it easy to understand. That's what's key. After that, all it takes is practice. Great lesson!

This is the best lesson I've ever seen. I've been trying to pick for 50 years. You're not a show-off. Your videos are very clear and I think I finally going to get it down. I'm 66, retired and I'm really enjoying the lessons. I'll get back to you when I finally get it. I want to go from there and do more. I know it takes a lot of patience to make a lesson this way. I really appreciate it.

Been workin days on this one. Be days more til i get it all.
Be months before i can rip it. But i will rip it.
    thanks dude.
Had to set the needle back many, many, many, uh repeatedly many times.
Start my day with this lesson and work on it for hours.
Seems ideal for a thumbpick. makin due with a flat pick.
    Thanks fer a great lesson.

Is anyone else curious why 41 people would hit "👎" on this incredible work of musical art??
Could it possibly be because Ken doesn't always play songs identically, or try to
" twin sister" the way the song was played on the original single when the song was released?
If so, then it is worth noting that during many of Merle's live performances, He played His songs many different ways than the way He recorded them in the studio.
Merle encouraged other artist to be creative & original, and complimented many artist that covered His songs.
He appreciated other artist, the way they applied their styles to His songs.
From the day I was born, I was blessed enough to be exposed to Merle Haggard's music.
Not just Merle, but he was certainly a household favorite. As a child, I used to sit with my guitar for hours and hours all weekend sometimes just trying to learn his music.
I have no idea how many times I've seen I've been honored and many times over the years.
    Thank you Ken,
Thank you for teaching me how to be a better player, of all the lessons & training videos I've paid for over the years.
    I've learned so much from
Ken Carlson about style, originality & tone.
Thanks for all of the FREE lessons, as well as the ones I've purchased.
I could watch & listen to You play all day.
(I actually have done so on more than 1 occasion.
    I'm a HUGE fan.
Again, thanks for the humble manner You always display in Your lessons.

I learned all you showed in this video in 2 hours. I have this curse that once i hear something, then i can't get it out of my head until i can play it on my guitar. Some would say a blessing, but i say curse, cause you could set the carpet on fire in front of me and i would not move until i nailed the riff in my head... But you teached so good that i could do and learn this faster than normal. So huge thankyou:)

Hi Danny! Thanks for the comment. The banjo "locking" tuner (made by Schaller and Kieth), has 2 set screws. You tune your E string to the proper pitch and tighten the first thumb screw. Next, you tune down to what ever pitch you want, D being the most popular, and tighten the other thumb screw.
Now you just turn the tuning key back and forth the go from the E to drop D. I've been using them for 20 years and like them a lot. Hope this helps!

  • @CountryGuitarChops
    @CountryGuitarChops  3 года назад +1

This message is for Keith Clark, who wrote me a few hours ago ans asked: "Did you have to modify the post hole for the banjo tuner ? Is it Keith or Schaller ?" Keith, I received a notification of your question, but for some reason I wasn't able to find the actual post on this page. So I decided to just post a comment here and hopefully you will see it. To answer your question, YES, I did have to ream the tuner hole out in order to allow the banjo tuner to fit. But keep in mind that I have the "vintage" style tuners, which use a smaller hole than the modern tuners, so if you have modern tuners you probably won't have to ream the hole out. To answer the second question... Hmmm, I'm not sure which tuner I had on that guitar at the time. But I've used both (for 30 years) and personally I prefer the Schaller brand. I have about 4 of them and only one Keith, and the Schallers simply feel and perform better in my opinion. Not only that, but you can buy two of them for the price of one Keith. BUT, when you buy a "set" of the Schallers, one of them comes with a thicker shank, which doesn't work for detuning a heavy wound string, like the bottom E that we use it for. I forget how I did it, but somehow I attached the think shanked tuners to a drill press, and then I held a file against the shank as it spun until it was as thin as the thinner shanked tuner. The thinner the shank, the more you have to turn the key to adjust the pitch. Thick shanks are impossible to tune accurately, so the thinner the shank the better. Again, I hope you find this post, and I hope it helps you out!
