They use Koji Kondo's themes from past games in these compositions, but I think neither Breath of the Wild nor Tears of the Kingdom music is composed by Koji Kondo.
But I agree, the use of the classic themes is very effective and tasteful. Koji Kondo will always remain very unique in the game music sphere, but the new generation of composers are great too on their own right. BotW had some tunes that has been on repeat in my head ever since, and also the TotK trailer #3 has some very unique and bold music.

I’ll endorse this comment. Kondo seems essentially retired from Zelda at this point. And the two most recent Zelda pieces I can think of from him are Grandmas Theme (Wind Waker) and the opening cutscene (Skyward Sword).
Meanwhile he’s pretty involved with Mario. Odyssey and the Mario Maker games have a lot of new compositions from him

    • @Moshugaani

      •Manaka Kataoka
      Yasuaki Iwata
      Hajime Wakai
Manaka Kataoka is the lead composer. Although I can't find info on who composed the BotW presentation trailer.

OK! Found the info. I remember reading from somewhere that Nintendo commissioned an outsider film composer for BotW 2017 Presentation trailer. But I can't find that source. But the composer for the Botw Presentation trailer is Kousuke Yamashita.

21:00 that sort of reverse digital modulation is a call back to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which used a lot of that to represent the Twilight realm. Absolute void/vortex/portal vibe, you nailed that.
The eye reaction to the hard panning left and right is so real. lmao
26:40 Yeah, that is the main zelda motif, you'll find it in the majority of Zelda songs, even if it's just barely suggesting the idea of that melody. It's all over the place. As much as I love it, it's honestly kinda nice when it does't show up, these days. 😅

I love that you compared and contrasted these two!. I'm nearly 40 and I grew up with the Zelda franchise. It's my favorite.
A lot of people hated the way they used music in Breath Of The Wild because they had been used to wild fanfares playing throughout. But I think they struck a perfect balance between ambient noise and full on cascade in the areas that were needed. If you listen closely to the music in the four main doungons, AKA The Devine Beasts, they added a subtle Morse code message in to each that matched with each champion's persona. Mipha and Daruk both start very early on followed by Urbosa. Revali's starts the latest and they are all the same message: SOS. Towards the end the messages change to SAD, which has been speculated to be "Search And Destroy" as Ganon has taken over the Devine Beasts by that point and the champions have died.

I'm pretty sure the instrument in tears of the kingdom isn't a vocaloid or synth, but a traditional Asian instrument called "Erhu" in China. This might be the Japanese equivalent. In Chinese movies or performances it's often used to evoke strong emotions. It's dynamic slides, vibratos and the traditional background might be some explanations for this emotional effect on recipients. Greetings from Berlin, Germany.

The shifts from adventurous to quite fearful and then resolute and victorious. Feels like a call to arms almost and like there's real gravitas to the themes being communicated that you don't get very often anymore. Love it. Reminds me quite a bit of the older compositions of proof of a hero from monster hunter.

The level of sophistication in this trailer theme is insane if you think about it for one second. You get of course this structure mixing nostalgia, calm, epicness and dread that works very well, but the range of sounds and instruments used is very broad. The unsettling use of reversed vocals, the shamisen that goes perfectly with the subtle piano for the calm parts, the bold saxophone for the epic parts, the almost tribal drums during the part on ganondorf... So cool man

Let me tell you, watching Tears of the Kingdoms trailer 3, it illicits such POWERFUL emotions from all the myriad of feelings and experiences from all my years of loving this franchise. I started link to the past when I was 4 lol.
The beats in that trailer are so magnificent and that character, ganondorfs reveal means a LOT to fans. His theme music setting up the reveal was incredible. The beats in the entire trailer are all pulled from different zelda sources, but are appropriate for whats being seen, and it feels like a culmination of decades of these zelda games colliding into one massive climax
Love hearing your breakdowns of all this, especially with your relatively new experiences to these franchises.

This was great. Zelda has incredible themes and motifs that have rippled through the games since 1986, and the music is as key to the games success as John Williams was to Star Wars. Even much of the gameplay involves playing instruments, so music is integral to the series which makes it a great choice to analyse.

21:33 Pretty spot on, I think. The game story is thought to be centered around Zonai race, which was only hinted in the previous game by various ruins, but they suddenly appeared now. Zonai seem to have some form time-manipulating technology (quite common theme in the Zelda franchise btw), which is reflected in reversed vocals.

Personally, I thought BotW's final trailer was better than TotK's final - music included - BUT that's not to say TotK's was bad. I was particularly impressed by the erhu/suona combo. Having played Tears of the Kingdom, the music from the establishing shots at the very beginning of the trailer, knowing where we hear it in the game then - like finally after so so so much time, some pieces of the world got closer as the sky islands to a certain someone. It really made me sad watching this part, knowing.
And the end shot of Zelda saying that Link should find her, ending with few notes of Zeldas Lullaby. Foreshadowing how heavy things will get. Like its a massive Spoiler to say why this is so sad.

Yeah, there are many companies that are deceptive about their trailers, which is often due to them showing off the game too far away from its release. The closer to release a trailer is the more accurate it tends to get though, and this trailer is of a fairly finished product. Nintendo is also rather trustworthy when it comes to this and rarely show off a game too early, it's one of the many reasons why they are one of the more reputable game developers to begin with. What you need to be wary about is trailers using a lot of CGI, basically trailers not showing proper gameplay; this trailer showed believable gameplay that is somewhat comparable to the previous game, mixed in with what is likely to be actual in-game cutscenes. Thus it's safe to assume you will be getting what you're seeing with this one.

What we are seeing in this trailer, as with all recent Nintendo trailers, is all in-engine scenes and gameplay from the finished product running on the actual hardware. Other companies will show you amazing animated scenes that aren't in the game at all and look nothing like the game. Nintendo doesn't do that.

I don't klnow what chat was yanking you so bad during stream about expectations VS reality from the trailer but the trailer is a very good representation of how the game will play. breath of the Wild's final trailer was really accurate to the gameplay as well.

I have a suggestion: record your first reaction, listen again (without recording), then record another section of the video that's just a more detailed breakdown. What do you think?

First time reactions are insubstantive without good analysis. Good analysis is great all on its own.

Hello there GeebZ I just now watched these two Twitch Streams where you listened to the Breath of the Wild OST and I have something important about that to say. That playlist is faulty. It is missing several Tracks. Like the last thing you listened to was Hyrule Castle Interior and well there is als an Exterior Version that was missing (which is my fav Track in the entire ost so if you miss out that would be sad) and several more.
The true complete playlist would be by ‘SquidGamerGal’ but I don’t think you’d want to go through that one completely again with many tracks that you heard already so I’ll leave it to you. I can write a full comment for all the tracks that are missing in that other playlist or you click through it yourself or you have a other idea I haven’t said here.

In lots of games you can't trust the trailers. In Zelda, however, the game is as epic as the trailers. In these two cases, particularly. The second one, the game is even better than the trailer, I must say.
Different main themes played on the trailers, I must point out. Characters and locations themes, I mean.

It baffles me that even seasoned western composers do not immediately recognize an erhu's characteristic sound when they hear it. Surely the erhu is among the top 3 most commonly used solo instruments in Asian traditional music. And yet I keep seeing this happen. This man even mistakes it for a human voice. ( 20:45 ) I don't know what to say.

If you listen to the individual tracks for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom you'll find that a lot of the tracks are very calm and laid back, and it's like that when you're actually playing the games themselves, like you have a lot of quiet and ambient moments as you wander around the world. Music picks up when you approach certain places you'll get a small bit of music playing somewhat softly in the background, and then you stumble across a settlement which have their own theme tune to it. Like you stumble upon a stable, you get a very cheerful catchy tune playing.
If you visit a village settlement like Kakariko Village you get a very flutey kind of music, and very Japan-esc feel to it with the type of instruments that are used like the Flute and then the drums that go along with it because they're in a kind of enclosed mountain area with tall mountains that surrounds the village on all sides. Compared to another village called Lurelin Village which is on the coastal line right next to the ocean you get a very soft steel drums that are used which gives it a tropical resort feel to it all because it's a fishing village after all.
One of my most favorites in Breath of the WIld and Tears of the Kingdom, since the music is present in both games is when you're riding on the back of a horse trotting along a path, you get a quick jingle jangle with the sound of the pianos playing followed by violins which plays the main melody, the piano's play like you're trotting along, it's all very quick and short notes. I recommend giving it a listen if you haven't already. I hope you'll do more music analysis for Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, because there's a lot to go through for all of them, especially for Tears of the Kingdom.
