  • 3 body problem is a popular science fiction Netflix series. It showcases humanity's race to defend itself after a civilization of aliens known as the San-Ti threaten to invade Earth. They are invited to earth by a young Chinese woman, Ye Wenjie, after she witnesses the cultural revolution in the 1960s and decides that humanity cannot save itself, that we are a danger to ourselves and the planet. Her act is a destructive impulse, much like the destructive impulses of our society today. Though the original book series was written in 2008, it's more relevant than ever today. Currently humans are obsessed with our own destruction, from politics and business to drugs and body modification. 3 body problem shows how humans, lacking belief in themselves, seeing only their darkness, often seek self destruction. But it's important to find perspective, to see that we are not just bad or good, but rather complex and nuanced beings which is what makes us valuable. The show references the Hindu God Shiva, who is known for destroying the world, but he is more than just a destroyer. He is also a yogi and an ascetic who spends his days in meditation and contemplation. Shiva possesses powers of discernment and a perspective that we humans do not have. 3 Body Problem shows us how Ye came to invite the aliens and the impact of her decision, she has doomed humanity to destruction based on her own perspective. 3 Body problem shows us how we can be both good and bad humans, wise or unwise, connected to the earth and the universe or tapped into only our pain.

If anything the Ye Wenjie plot tells us that access to radio telescopes must be put under strict control - they need to be treated as dangerous weapons of self destruction.
Ye Wenjie acting as an "anti-swordholder" in the first book of the trilogy is a warning.

Though I don't agree with his politics, I find Ronald Reagan's statement to be quite relevant:
"I occasionally think how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside this world. And yet, I ask you, is not an alien force already among us? What could be more alien to the universal aspirations of our peoples than war and the threat of war?"
I can only imagine how much we could achieve if we united as a species against a singular threat. But then again, we fail to come together against poverty, hunger, disease, and war.

Without the relative lens from an imaginary superior race of aliens, human society or culture by itself outside of the fiction is completely meaningless. And without someone assign a meaning to it, I really don't think human culture is worth condemning or cheering for, it is just what it is. I think three body did a fantastic job in the context building, which can put a lot of human values in perspective of something whether it be social stability or scientific progression, etc. and more impressively, it lands well into the character motivation and building. Without these masterfully done elements, I think a person will soon realize how meaningless their life is truly. Even in the context of the three body novels, vast majority of humans are not even worthy of any attention from the aliens, only the most intelligent and capable is considered "human". Ironic to say the least when thinking about what random individuals mean in a human society.

To clarify, we're never told what the San-Ti/Trisolarans look like in the book. It's all guess work from fans

"Redemption of Time" was authorized by Liu Cixin - and while not considered "canon" at least it may give us an idea.
