  • There's a brand new 3D tool in town! In Part 1 of this two-part tutorial, we'll get introduced to Geo, a new Red Giant plugin for Adobe After Effects. We'll get an entire overview from texturing, to cloning, to compositing, to quickly casting a shadow from our 3D objects. This tutorial is intended for all skill levels, and will get you ready for Part 2.
    Part 2 is here: • Getting Started with R...

    Congrats on the tool. To give kudos to the After Effects god who brought AE to the masses, Looks like Element3d with an AE interface ;)

      Yes! It's an easier-to-use tool with a much simpler interface. It can't do everything Element can do - and it's not trying to! We're just giving you another tool to add to your toolbox (and, if you already have Red Giant subscription, this tool is already included!)

    There's no way to have different 3D models randomize? You can only clone and duplicate one model? For example, what if i wanted a variety of fruit models, you can't randomize different models, only one? You would basically need to create multiple Geo layers separately to do that then?

    Why does the robot appear to be sinking through the floor/shadow catcher? Is it because it was not positioned correctly in 3D space?

    • @nate42
      @nate42 3 месяца назад +2

      Yeah, the positioning just needs a little refinement. The shadow catcher is actually a second object in Geo's renderer, so the geometry will interact with it. It's great for planting objects into the ground plane or growing things out of it.

    This looks great but I can't figure out how to import an obj sequence into after effects or how to import it to Geo in a way that works. Would be wonderful and super helpful if you could provide a tutorial showing how to import an obj sequence into After Effects and how to get it to work with Geo. When I try to import it into After Effects it just wants to import it as a single frame obj. This is one of the new 3D features in AE. Please help. It's of very limited use to me if I can't import an 3D sequence. Thank you.

    • @nate42
      @nate42 3 месяца назад +1

      When you import through Geo's model browser, just select the first OBJ in the sequence and it should bring them all in. If not, make sure your naming convention doesn't include a number prefix like Object_3_0001. If it does, I recommend batch renaming the sequence using Adobe Bridge to eliminate the prefix. A tutorial on this is a good idea.

    Hoping someone can help me. So, I have followed ALL the instructions from 8:40 - 15:00, and I every time change the base color map from NONE to an image that I want to appear on the display. Absolutely nothing happens. Any thoughts, advice would be most welcomed. :)

      Red Giant team member here. We did discover a bug where certain texture aspect ratios aren't rendering. We have a fix on the way. In the meantime, precomping the texture into a square or 16:9 comp should solve it.

    Ok, finally messing with this. What format is your animated model in? is it an OBJ sequence? an animated FBX? I've tried both, but only the OBJ sequence seems to be correctly posed, but it does not animate. I am unable to go through the series of frames and the model textures do not come through. Secondly, once you have your models imported into the custom section is there a way to delete them out of there? I have a lot of test files filling up my Custom model section but i cant remove them. Is there a way to update the thumbnail with a proper image of the model rather than the Maxon logo? Is there a place I can check out the documentation on Geo?

      @@suziesilver2538 I see he has it as an OBJ sequence in his comp. I've tried several ways to import the sequence but i'm going to guess he is using the beta branch of After Effects that probably lets you import OBJ sequences.

      @@AaronDigitalMuppet Thank you for your very helpful reply! I'll check that out. But I'm still vague on how to get that file into Geo from the time line. Hopefully there will be a user guide and or more detailed tutorials in the future.

    • @AaronDigitalMuppet
      @AaronDigitalMuppet 3 месяца назад +1

      @@suziesilver2538 Ok, i tried the After Effects beta. It seems you can just import an animated GLB file and it will just work right away with out any extra steps or plug-ins involved. You drag the GLB into your comp and it will be fully textured, then you hit the > to expand the options and select the animation you want in the Animation Options tab that you will see... I don't believe he uses Geo for any of the robot stuff? Seems like its just a tutorial on the shadow catcher aspect of Geo. I still haven't figured out how he is able to use import the OBJ sequence yet. Perhaps Maxon will comment on here and inform us with a more in depth tutorial.

    • @nate42
      @nate42 3 месяца назад +2

      Red Giant team member here. You can import OBJ sequences using Geo's model browser. Just select the first obj in the sequence and it will bring them all in. If that's not working for you, make sure there isn't a prefix number in the name prior to the sequence number like Object_3_0001. If there is, just batch rename the sequence using something like Adobe Bridge. Geo also supports animation with C4D files. Currently, materials aren't automatically imported with the model, so you need to bring those in yourself and place them in the timeline to be referenced. This is so you retain full capability to customize the texture maps as you wish, although we hope to streamline this process in the future. Unfortunately, there's not yet a way to remove custom files that have been imported into the new cloud-based asset browsers but it is on the roadmap to fix this. We're also working on implementing proper rendering of thumbnails to replace the Maxon logo in the browser. You can find a thorough user guide for Geo on maxon.net under the Support tab. There is also a form for submitting ideas there, so please feel free to send us any feedback or requests you have.

    I'm working on a 4k project with an object(fbx) and its textures.
    I noticed that when I load the model, the scene is very manageable and the preview is fast.
    But every time I add a texture, the preview is slowed down by 1 second, so since my object has 8 textures, the preview is slowed down by 8 seconds per frame.
    So to preview the scene (about 7 seconds of scene) it takes up to 40 minutes or an hour. Also because there are other effects, such as motion blur, color correction, etc.
    Is this normal?
    I also opened a ticket but we still haven't been given a solution.
    Do you have other solutions?
    Help me please

      I believe I just responded to your support request, but just for everyone's benefit, here's what I found with your project.
      As you reported, the responsiveness of playback is much faster until you start selecting texture maps. Each map selected increases the frame render time. This is definitely expected since Geo is having to request that image data from After Effects and the exchange takes a measure of time. Also, the size of the texture being used will impact speed. The larger the texture map, the more time it takes to process. The texture maps in your project are all 4096x4096, which is on the larger side. As an experiment, I precomposed each map and scaled them down to 2048x2048, a reduction factor of 4. This resulted in a dramatic improvement to speed. There is a little sacrifice to detail fidelity, but if you're not needing to show the model close-up, this may be acceptable. It depends on your needs. Additionally, I found two maps that weren't necessary. In Material 2 (outer), the color map is a solid blue, so I sampled the color from the layer and entered that into Geo's Base Color picker. Likewise, the outer metallic map is a solid 48% gray. So, I just set the Metalness value to 48%. This eliminated the need to reference either of those layers, which further preserved performance.
      Any additional effects applied over the top of Geo will have an impact on speed. Motion blur is especially expensive to process.

      Who doesn't use FX Console?!
      For folks who already have a Red Giant subscription, it's nice to have a tool like this (included at no extra cost) vs. buying another tool. It's not a copy of Element 3D; it can't do everything Element 3D can do, but it does have a much simpler interface since you can work right in After Effects.
      It's just an extra tool in your toolkit!
