the HD 7000 series had such longevity thanks to GCN. something that wasn't touched on was how at the same price point when released, 3GB was rather generous considering that on nvidia's side only the 980 and Titan had more, and the "3.5GB" of the 970 had some issues once VRAM filled up, but was more expensive anyway. i never had a R9 280, but a friend with one only upgraded once he found a good deal on an RX 480 4GB. i think i still have an R9 290X somewhere, powerful card showing it's age now, but ran very hot, maybe even throttling a little.
the naming around some AMD GPUs got a bit weird with the rebrands with the 7950, R9 280, R9 380, and R9 285 all essentially being the same GPU core with tweaks to power, clocks, and memory. a while ago i helped a friend build a cheap gaming pc with a free-to-him R9 285 and i5-4570. i wonder how that's holding up now.

      Thanks for the comment.
This is just my opinion, so take this with a grain of salt
I believe that AMD backed itself in a corner: it sold GCN 1 and 2 based GPUS in both PlayStation 4 and XBox One, and they probably had to provide support for that architecture for longer than they thought. And as NVidia was bringing out new GPUs, they had to do the same, but without having the means to develop new architectures - they had to support GCN for consoles.
The 290X is a hot card; the reference card (blower style cooler) will creep up above 60 at idle, so a custom fan curve is a must for it.

I don't own any of these games, but the long drive should be playable. My summer car would have the R9 280 closer to the minimum specs.

I wasn't that impressed with Nimez when I gave them a try - albeit for a TeraScale 2 card.
I'll keep them in mind for the next time I'm checking out the R9 280.

It really depends on your local (used parts) market. In my place, the prices vary from 40 to 70 USD.
