You have probably the worlds most famous Scot, playing an Egyptian who's pretending to be a Spaniard. And he's mentoring a Frenchman who's playing a Scot. And *he's* being chased by a guy from Ohio, who's playing an ancient Russian barbarian. Then you set the whole thing to Queen.
    And it is unarguably *AWESOME*!!!

Ok, you've passed the first test and so you're ready to hear the most important thing about being a fan of Highlander. ......come over here...."never...and I mean NEVER WATCH HIGHLANDER 2"
I was one of the accursed fans who went to Highlander 2 thinking "How far are they gonna kick it up for this one...What will they even do???" and so me and my friends went to a bar across the street from the theater on premiere day and got drunk and played pool and talked about how great Highlander was/is! Gregory Widen got the idea of writing the script after visiting a museum of sorts and saw a beautifully restored suit of armor in a glass case and thought, "What if the guy who wore this suit was alive right now, what if you owned all of this and you're telling your story?"
The script was titled Shadow Clan then The Dark Knight and finally HIGHLANDER.
The script was a lot darker and violent than the movie itself:
Connor McLeod was born in 1408, rather than 1518.
Rather than being banished, he decides to leave never to return after finding out he's an immortal.
Ramirez was in fact a Spaniard rather than an Egyptian and trains McLeod 3 years rather than 3 months as seen in the movie.
Immortals do have children and in one scene, McLeod attends the funeral of one of his sons while his other sons, all in their late 40's, early 50's see him as an immortal.
McLeod goes under the name Richard Turpin and is art dealer rather than an antiques dealer.
The Kurgan goes under the name Carl William Smith, and rather than a savage warrior, he's a cold blooded killer
In the climax of the film, McLeod beheads the Kurgan but nothing happens as it's left ambiguous as the audience doesn't know if he's still immortal or not, as the Prize is not mentioned. The fight scene was going to take place on top of the Statue Of Liberty, the Empire State Building, an amusement park, and finally Slivercup Studios.

@@stefanforrer2573 The Kurgan is far more disciplined than McLeod when it comes to "The Immortal Code". In the church, McLeod grabs the Kurgan by the coat, and then by the face. The Kurgan is the one who prevented a fight in the church by pushing McLeod away and reminding him that they are on holy ground, and the the respected rule of "no conflict on holy ground" is honored. There is also a reason the Kurgan let the veteran live.

The film is directed by Russel Mulcahy, best known prior to this for his music video direction. So the transitions and camera shots are extremely stylish. The sweeping down shot at Madison Square Garden required a custom-made computer-controlled camera rig, while the sweeping side shot during the final battle was the result of strapping the camera to an office chair and shoving it across the floor.
Sir Sean Connery recorded his opening monologue in his bathroom. And it made it sound epic as hell! He also only had a few days to film his scenes and he bet the director that it couldn't be done. Mulcahy won that bet.
Welcome to the Highlander rabbit hole. Avoid the second movie. The third is pretty good, even though it's basically a lesser repeat of the first. After that it just gets worse and worse. The TV series isn't bad, but it has its ups and downs, and trying to fit it into canon isn't worth the headache. The spin-off series, Highlander: The Raven isn't very good.

Fun fact about the guy having the Uzi, Highlander was filmed in 1986 and is set in 1984. Before the Hughes amendment May 19, 1986 fully automatic weapons were easily available. It required additional screening, a few months wait period, and a $200 tax stamp, but there was nothing prohibiting the manufacturer and sale to civilians.
The reason automatics are so absurdly expensive now is because after the ban, no new machine gun could be manufactured for sale to civilians, so their value has skyrocketed. What used to cost $600 forty years ago is now at the Cheapest around 15K, and on average 30-60K

The Kurgan, played by Clancy Brown in Highlander, takes the head of the third living immortal, and says to McLeod, "Kastagir is gone. Only you and I remain." This line is echoed in John Wick, Chapter 4, when Harbinger (Clancy Brown) is conveying the rules of the duel to John Wick and Marquis, he says, "In the event that both parties survive, each will approach the other at increments of ten paces until only one remains."

I respect that this movie exists and laid the foundation for the franchise. This one obviously ended with no expectation of being anything more than a one and done but ended up having 6 movies, 4 comic book series, 2 television series, an animated series, two published video games and one unpublished, a card game, and more...
I never cared much for the movies, but the 1992-1998 television series was a must watch for me during most of its original run. The series followed Duncan MacLeod, not Conner. Although Christopher Lambert (Conner) did return for the pilot.
Season 4-7 of the series started with the following narration (along with Queen's "Princes of the Universe" song that started this movie off) prior seasons had slightly less descriptive variations of this script:
"He is Duncan MacLeod, the Highlander. Born in 1592 in the Highlands of Scotland, and he is still alive. He is immortal. For four hundred years, he's been a warrior ... a lover ... a wanderer, constantly facing other Immortals in combat to the death. The winner takes his enemy's head, and with it, his power. I am a Watcher, part of a secret society of men and women who observe and record, but never interfere. We know the truth about Immortals. In the end, there can be only one. May it be Duncan MacLeod, the Highlander."
