I have been playing percussion on our worship team for 2 yrs. We rotate all the musicians and vocalists almost every week, including me. So, in our case we have 5 drummers that are in rotation. All the drummers have come to me to say how much they enjoy playing with me. I credit you for sharing your thoughts on how percussion should be expressed on a worship team.
I have been playing percussion at churches for years and even just first few minutes of this video would have done tremendous help when I was getting started. Great job!
I used to be one of the percussionist for Hillsong Church in Australia, and was fortunate enough to record in a few of their albums. Your advice is ABSOLUTE GOLD !!!!!!!!!!
I've been playing for almost 40+ years in the church...and you are 'spot on' my friend. Less is more on the congas in the church. At least this is just one man's opinion! Thanks! "gon bop, gon, bop" Brother Rick... Twain Harte CA
Praise God so thankful I found you on your tube keep doing Gods work my brother here to learn I have bongos and I’m determined with Gods help to get some Congas I’m a lefty so we shall see how this workouts for God glory I recently had a renewed e counter with God and this is heavy in my soul as a child and teenager I always played the tambourine guiros and other instruments this has always been my favorite super excited to be here 🙌🏻 old school music by Marino Double Album has the best percussion music I grew up with here to learn
Thanks for all you do. Been practicing for a year and starting to gather up percussion instruments little by little. Thank you for your teaching and knowledge. God bless you Eddie!!!
Great video brother. I’ve been playing worship for 17 years and am a percussionist in the Cristian contemporary band Eyewitnes. And everything you explained was spot on. Thanks for this video. God bless you and your family. Conga Jack. Brothers in Christ.
Eric, Great video. My focus as a percussionist is in the worship setting. I have a RUclips channel called The Church Percussionist that I just started. It’s just recorded on my phone and uploaded. I haven’t gone into explaining things yet. The one thing I can add to your discussion is that so much changed when the drummer changes
Most of us like 70s' sounds for some reasons; the most important one (as I used to think) is that warm and organic sound of analog recordings and drums miking techs so forth. But years ago, one day I've realised something completely different about 70s sounds; 'The percussions!' Almost each music style of that period included percussions. Especially conga. Pop, disco, funk, fusion, jazz, R&B, soul etc. The congas characterized and contributed to the sound of 70s more than anything else. Period! After I've realised that I was more into it. I'm a bass player and %70 of my practice backing tracks are either conga only or drums&conga. I always feel like the congas and the bass (both electric and upright) sits incredibly well and satisfaying. One of my main play-alongs was that famous Changuito-Hidalgo duet. Especially if we're to play latin music, no drums at all! I hate to stay within the boundaries of the kick-drum in latin music. So, whatever the music is; I would go gigs without drums but not without congas. I have to hear that!
God bless you, and all brothers that are worshiping with small percussion. Thank you so much for the advice, for helping us understand the true role of being a percussionist. It was great 👍.
Very inspirational and an honest set of guide lines on how to play along side a worship band, not being to loud but being that nice bit of background rhythm...some nice beats to learn too👍 Cheers Dude.
Really appreciate you take the time to make these videos.. I have been playing wih at churches for a while now and I have a more clear idea of what to do in these songs. Thanks!
Awesome! More is needed in this area. Truly a percussionist in this genre (CCM and often Gospel) is also a composer as there is often not as much of these parts on the more “rock” contexts.
Saludos... My brother! That kind of combination I play in my church...Thank you! For give us more ideas to use in every diferent Church Events...God Bless you and your family 👪🙏
@@APercussionLife Hey brother...I hope you do more videos like this one with new techniques...😀 I am going to add new sound for my Perc. set Thanks! Question? Do you ever play this instrument call "Tubanos"? I have a set of 3 ...Is not to many videos of it...Maybe you can make one when you have the chance...
That was soo beautiful! I'm so inspired, I so wish I could play like that 😩I have to bring this to my conga teacher see if he can teach me this pattern. 🙏
Glad to see others use latin percussion for worship, been blessed to contribute for about 40yrs + In reality what helps me fit rythms is listening to Jewish Israeli and Middle Eastern sounds and patterns. Blessings in Yeshua
Nice, thanks for the great advice! I have a question about that genre(christian) of music being played at higher volumes or with much more feeling, such as black gospel music or an energetic southern gospel feel. It seems as if one can get a bit more vivacious on their drums(congas & bongos cajon etc) would you agree? I would like your take on the percussionist with the livelier more energetic music. Looking forward to hearing your comments.
Thank you for this. :) Can you also share if you use/incorporate a hybrid method(adding drum pad) in “praise” or “fast songs” specially with techno feels? God bless you. :)
I generally agree with most everything you say in your videos but I don’t wholeheartedly agree with this one! I have been playing at a pretty big church in the DMV for a lot of years now and we do CCM, Worship Music,, Gospel etc etc I don’t feel as though you need to play soft simply cause it’s worship music but you do need to pick your spots and play dynamically. You are playing for God so play your best and use the talent he gave you at the highest level you can. There are many songs that require heavy louder patterns one we used to play all the time is Bless the Lord by Tye Tribett . This past Sunday we did Lord of all by JJ Hairston and pockets of hope which is a Go-Go Socket with movements all the way through. Now if you are only playing hillsong type tunes then maybe the soft approach is necessary but all I guess I am saying is play the music with your heart it’s not a competition but it is worship of the most high. You say sprinkles I say seasoning our job is to flavor the meal.
please divide the rhythm in two or three part with numbers then easy to pic that up ,this way is difficult ,Master you doing well but for us is not easy to copy what you do ,thanks again.
It is a huge quality to fit it any style, but this "American Worship" music sounds boring to me. I don´t want to sound rude, but as an Atheist non-American person it sounds alien to me, even if I guess there are some top musicians out there. Obviously, I am giving a thumb up, like I do on all your videos!
Hey man, how you're doing? You are really pro, really good work. Thank you. I wanna ask you, if you wanna be part of our new song-project from musicians from around the world. We wanna record fields of gold. Are you interested to join us musicians from Canada, India, Switzerland.... Let me know. Take care 🎶🙏
Praise God. Since you don’t really see percussionist in Christian worship these days, you just brought it back in 2021. Amen? Amen!!!
Ooooo Amen!!!

I really appreciate your emphasis on spiritual and musical sensitivity and awareness of the environment. 😊

Do you still play in church?

just now adding Congas , bongos and some other things to worship. Thanks for this its helpful to get your perspective.
Appreciate your opening comments and keep playing brother! Your technique makes all the difference.
That was a great word my brother... when we’re playing in worship we’re serving a higher purpose. Amen to that!
Absolutely beautiful! Masterfully blended. Thank you. Terrific presentation. 😊
The word multi- percussionist, is an awesome definition for position in a band. And I also heard and felt some smooth jazz and smooth grooves as well.

Thank you ❤️ Similar to sprinkles. I was taught that percussion was not the meat and potatoes, but it is the spice.
Man that djembe just sounds so nice
i like what you got going on here i just got my 3 congas set and i'm ready to learn how to play but i need a teacher 😇

Also hope to see videos using both shakers/chimes/tambourines interchangeably with conga, bonggos/dejembe and with actual full band sound :)
Thank you Eric
Thank you @Ericperez for this video. I've been waiting for this type of video with the whole set for worship songs. 🙌great video

How might one turn this 4/4 pattern into a 3/4 please? 🙏
How might I play this pattern for a song that switches from 3/4 to 4/4 and then back to 3/4, please?
