The song is about the viking invasion of the British isles from about 790 ad. all the references - valhalla , hammer of the gods , the land of ice and snow where the hot springs flow , we are your overlords , tales of gore and so on refer to that. the song has been used in a Thor film , school of Rock (jack Black is a big fan) and also one of the Shrek movies - princess Fiona fights to it . Led Zep had been doing concerts in Iceland and had a very enjoyable time there and Robert Plant had an interest in early British history which comes out in other songs - No quarter for example. They also reference English lit in other songs - the Lord of the Rings including Vattle of Evermore . they are intelligent men with wide ranging interests so suprising inetersting songs result.

This song or at least the yell has been featured in several movies. This was written after the band were in Iceland, & the became fascinated with the Viking Invasions. My understanding they wrote it as kind of a joke, but fans love it, it opened many of their early concerts. It would get the fans excited for the rest of the concert, later their song Rock & Roll was the opener song. Thank you for your reaction, & so many more great songs to hear.

Just copied Steve Marriott from the Small faces. Plant loved Marriott. Was one of his idols. Small faces did a cover of whole lotta love in 1965. The song was written by Willie Dixon. Not Led Zepplin. Marriott blows the doors off Plant. Then listen to Tin Soldier by Small faces. Marriott was special in Humble Pie also. Songs like .."Black coffee". Zepplin had talented musicians. They also plagarized alot of songs. Dazed and Confused is another.

We come from the land of the ice and snow
From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow
    The hammer of the gods
Will drive our ships to new lands
To fight the horde, sing and cry
    Valhalla, I am coming
On we sweep with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore
    Ah-ah, ah!
    Ah-ah, ah!
We come from the land of the ice and snow
From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow
How soft your fields so green
    Can whisper tales of gore
Of how we calmed the tides of war
    We are your overlords
On we sweep with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore
So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins
For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing
    Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
