Are you suggesting that all aftermarket filters are considered cheap? Because shops run aftermarket filters because it would be a nightmare sourcing, ordering, stocking OEM filters. Sure this is great advice for the DIY'er but I can guarantee (just about) you every non dealer shop in the USA is not carrying OEM filters across the board on hand. From what I've seen most places offer upgraded filters for more money versus the standard ones. Also hyundai/kia/ and some GM OEM filters are made in korea. Where it's made is less important, how it's made and how ethical the companies involved IS important.

Just because it's OEM doesn't make it better. OEM's cheap out on filters too - the AC Delco filter for my 5.7 uses a plastic center tube, paper end caps and a nitrile ADB, while higher quality ones are metal and silicone. Hard to find a good filter these days.

I see it every day on my BMWs! The Chinese and Korean filters barely look like they filter anything! They have o-rings that fall apart!
    Two issues:
1: the outer o-ring leaks and saturates the belts and hoses! Failure of the belt can cause some major damage!
2: the inner o-ring deteriorates and lets full blown garbage go straight to your Vanos solenoids! And if you go to far on that, more fun surprises happen!

The Kia I have the best luck with OEM filters. My tractors Napa Gold filters work excellent( nearest John deere parts dealer 50 miles away) and the work truck I do use a cheap filter. The price difference between a good filter and a low quality filter is less than a coffee at Starbucks. In my many years working in the field, I have never once seen a Fram filter on a commercial engine. Most are Baldwin, Wix and Fleetguard. (Baldwin being the most popular) Aftermarket filters are not less expensive than factory filters like they use to be.

Good topic Mike, something I never usually thought about really, but I've always grabbed Mobile 1 filter with the oil since I assumed that it would coincide with one another in terms of quality?
But, there is no doubt about it, oil and filter quality is something basic, but seems like it tends to be a little neglected by many.
I agree, it's really important considering how much it affects the most important components in the vehicle!

I had to research on my own for my particular application. I made my decision based on what MANY others found out when they did oil analysis on their dirty oil.

The Honda OEM in the thumbnail *is* a basic Fram filter... Even within different versions of the same OEM filter you can find different build quality (at one point there were Purflux, Mahle, Filtech/Tokyo Roki and Fram versions of the Honda OEM oil filter) or even within the same corporation you can find different build quality (some Frams are rebadged Purflux filters, some Purflux filters are rebadged Fram filters; some Purolator are rebadged Mann + Hummel, some Mann + Hummel are rebadged Purolator and so on, now Wix is part of Mann + Hummel too), but as long as you stick with a reputable brand (including Champ Labs, Gonher etc) it should be totally fine.

Personally I use OEM, moble 1, or Bosch on my vehicles. But I have seen A LOT OF vehicles make it to 300k with nothing but fram filters and wal-mart oil. Frequency of oil change is the key. I aint going for 10k+ oil change intervals.
Also, execpt at Idle most if not all filters are in some percentage of bypass. All the oil does not get filtered. This is how metal makes it around inside an engine.
For example. 7.3 PSD oil pump flows 17 gallons of oil a minute at 2200 RPM, that huge oil filter it has is only rated for 9 gallons of oil a minute. With that kind of flow it is important to have a filter that will not disintegrate and come apart. That is where the cheap filters fail, and cause VVT issues (among others), you can actually find filtet media inside the VVT components when making a repair sometimes.
