Chopin's Ballade No. 1 for Orchestra (arr. Timothy Schmidt)

  • Months in the making, this arrangement of one of Chopin's most popular works translates his virtuosic piano writing into the dynamic and timbrally-rich strokes of the symphony orchestra. Ever since I learned and performed the Ballade, I have heard in the accompaniment of its A theme pizzicato strings, in its brilliant rendition of the B theme a brass fanfare, and in its coda the rousing chaos of dozens of musicians primed to snap... and so the list goes on. Motivated by an orchestration assignment to realize at last this years-long dream, I have transformed the Ballade into a bubbling, rumbling orchestral force.

    Beautiful, powerful arrangement. I was hesitant to listen because Chopin's first Ballade is near and dear to me, and I wasn't sure how well it would translate. But you did an incredible job, although I would've loved to hear participation from a piano in the piece.

    • @TimothySchmidt
      @TimothySchmidt  2 года назад +8

      Thank you! As my favorite piano piece, it was also important to me to treat the original material with great care. But yeah I left out a piano, as I felt it would either be redundant to or come nowhere close to the musicality of the original :)

  • @chipesh
    @chipesh 2 года назад +76

    While Chopin's genius shines through, something is lost here. It's the piano.
    While things like the third Etude sound magnificent orchestrated, the Ballades are my true love in the Eden of Chopin.
    They sound at home on the pianoforte with their creator.

    • @aceofspades8634
      @aceofspades8634 Год назад +20

      I agree completely. Don’t get me wrong, it’s clear that the creator of this video has put in a lot of work into this creative endeavour (bravo to that!) and the result is very interesting to listen to, but as you said, the Ballades just don’t really work orchestrated.
      Maybe it’s because the constancy of the musical voice and line of thought (after all, Ballades are very ‘linear’ in nature) gets interrupted when the different instruments try to take over from the other, but we lose that crucial sense of intimacy and self-searching reflection this piece is so famous for. The first theme suffers the most in my opinion (possible due to the computer-generated audio) as it just sounds too much like a nonchallant waltz for me, no philosophy, no sense of exploration, etc.
      I know this probably wasn’t what the arrange was going for, so once again, congratulations to them on completing their project! Needless to say though, nothing compares to the original for me! As Debussy said, “with the piano alone, he discovered everything.”

  • @monkeflip2510

    I was not sure too, but this turned out to be amazing! I got goosebumps at the climaxes (although I would have played more fortissimo the third time the theme B comes out, that b flat in the bass, and the "il più forte possibile" the octave D in the bass). Some personal thoughts:
    I would have liked the main theme to be played by a violin, my ear was ready to hear it ahahah. The chords in pizzicato are actually cool with the orchestra, even if at the piano I tend to play them legato. I couldn't hear some more virtuosic passages (like the scale at 1:59 or the arpeggios at 2:50) but I think that's just mixing struggle, as long as this is played by a computer. Then I would have played some parts in a different tempo, but again, this is played by a computer so you can't do much with the rubato. Excellent work! Keep it up and congratulations
    Edit: the presto con fuoco part is amazing, furious, perfect

    My only complaint would have to be how the 6/4 meter sounds like a 3/4 meter. This ballade ended up sounding like a waltz everytime the first theme was repeated. I guess the timpani accenting the 1st & 4th quarter notes highlighted the waltz rhythm. All in all, I thought it was a great effort. I'd love to hear the other ballades or maybe even the Barcarolle or Polonaise Fantasy orchestrated. I wonder what Chopin would've thought, seeing as he was not particularly great at orchestral scores.

    • @TimothySchmidt
      @TimothySchmidt  Год назад

      Interesting observation - I definitely see how that can come across, but the theme in particular follows the original score quite closely, so I'm not sure how that would be mitigated. No plans for other such orchestrations at this time, but I appreciate the listen to this one!

When I saw this I immediately listened knowing that Chopin's pieces are extremely hard to orchestrate-however, you did really well! Its only virtual orchestra yet it sounds sublime and powerful already, I believe if this gets performed by a real orchestra, the full potential of your arrangement can flourish, lastly-you captured the "storytelling" element of this ballade really well; I rarely comment on RUclips videos but I really want to express how amazing this is, thank you and keep it up!

    Amazing work! Chopin's Ballades were designed to convey a narrative, with evolving themes meant to represent characters, dramatic development sections ment to transition between 'episodes' as if it were a play, as if there is a hidden narrator describing whats happening between scenes. The codas too, which arent common in Chopin's music, which feel like the end of season of a TV show, ending on a cliffhanger. Its all by design and I think your orchestration captures the cinematic spirit of this work beautifully, whether that was intentional or not! Chopin also wasnt very skilled with orchestral writing, so this definitely adds something. I would love to get ahold of a midi of your orchestration to analyze!

    The best arrangement I’ve ever seen. I’m like this so much even though this is the first video I’ve ever seen of this channel, this is with it a doubt the best I’ve ever seen.

    From Ravel we have many pieces also in two versions. I always prefer the piano. But here I am super-amazed. Great work.

    I congratulate you on the wonderful arrangement, extraordinary sense and, at least in part, retaining Chopin's spirit. As a Chopin purist, I never thought I would ever approve of an orchestral arrangement of his works, I heard many attempts and it was always impossible to listen to it for a long time. Beautiful, almost piano-like performances :)

    The music of Chopin, his music for the piano, has its life and its death on the Piano...nothing else could substitute this condition, because if it also seems to work through another medium this is not without the destruction of the typical style and way to conceive art created by Chopin

    I'd say this arrangement eloquently reveals why Chopin wrote his astonishing Ballade 1 for piano - and not orchestra.

    Please don't do this! Chopin's music is uniquely suited to the piano. In fact he was not a great orchestrator. His genius made huge innovations in piano writing. The character of his music is DESTROYED, not enhanced by trying to orchestrate it. The nobility and power of this ballade becomes soupy and bombastic here. Chopin hated those qualities in music.

      Thanks for listening! Regarding Chopin's gift for and contributions to piano writing, I'm definitely with you! Hence this Ballade finding its place as my favorite piano work ever since I learned it, it's truly in a league of its own as far as I'm concerned. But I must disagree with the claim that this by necessity precludes any attempts of orchestration. There are many examples of well-regarded works for one instrumentation receiving new and/or different life in another. Just look at what the master of orchestration, Ravel, achieved! Arrangements like his all the way down to modest attempts like mine do not strive to replace or subvert the material from which they came but showcase a love and respect for the original work such that we cannot help but learn from and find inspiration in it. Such is the way of countless composers over the centuries!

      @@TimothySchmidt Thank you for addressing my comment. I realize that transcriptions and arrangements are abundant throughout music history, and have often given the public greater access to various works. In my opinion (just speaking for myself), some composers' piano works succeed as orchestral transcriptions while others don't. Ravel, Debussy, Beethoven, Mozart, any number of composers had command of orchestral writing as well as piano writing. Even so, they presumably chose which medium best suited a particular work. Chopin is nearly unique in the sense that his writing was so specifically pianistic (he supposedly hated orchestral effects on the piano). He just didn't seem to think orchestrally. A familiar example is the ballet Les Sylphides, featuring someone's orchestration (Glazunov?) of Chopin's music. I'll grant it sounds pretty, but the potency and directness of the music is diluted by strings, winds, etc. A dancer once said to me, "It sounds so much better with the orchestra." I begged to differ.

      I think my initial comment was unnecessarily harsh. My feelings about the topic haven't changed but, after your very thoughtful reply, I reconsidered my manner of expressing my opinion. Best wishes to you.

    • @TimothySchmidt
      @TimothySchmidt  Год назад +2

      Fair points! So we'll just have to disagree on the potency of Chopin in an orchestral context. I would agree there are works for piano that would prove rather awkward in another instrumentation and have indeed turned down requests to arrange some pieces on those grounds. But I always found this Ballade to be so grand in scale, so grandiose in gesture, that I could easily imagine violins singing out melodies, woodwinds trading solos, brass covering soft harmonies, etc. This in no way takes away from the piece as a magnificent and idiomatic piano work that needs no arrangement to be thoroughly enjoyed and understood!

    Does NotePerformer understand the phrase "presto con fuoco?" Other than that, pretty nice overall.

    • @TimothySchmidt
      @TimothySchmidt  Год назад +1

      Not sure what you mean by that - the tempo of the presto section was determined by me and my tastes, not NotePerformer. Orchestras are more cumbersome than virtuoso pianists and cannot be expected to match their most extreme tempi!

    • @cziffrathegreat666
      @cziffrathegreat666 Год назад +3

      I think this tempo suits it better, maybe a tiny bit faster, not more.
      It would sound muddy and rushed if it were played way too fast even on a piano
