I seen Yes, GFTO tour of 77 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY. Awaken is my personal all-time. Yes, song. This song has so much emotion. I purchased a T-shirt at the show. Yesshows Tour 1977. I was so proud to sport that cool concert t-shirt going back to start my senior year in high school. The concert ticket was 7.50 with floor seating. Those were the days. Thanks for posting this classic Yes live track.

This album stands on its own merit. This song is incredible, and proof that Yes continued to create modern masterpieces even 5-6 years after their foundations had been secured with Fragile and Close to the Edge. I've been listening to them since the early 70's. So many great memories!

Nothing can compare to seeing Yes on stage live - I was so fortunate to live in Birmingham & they played there often , first at The Odeon & then the Symphony Hall.....always in awe of Mr Wakeman who has more talent in one hand than anyone would think possible.....wonderful memories for me 🥰🥰

We had tickets for the first of the 1998 Symphony Hall gigs which was cancelled as all their gear was stuck in storms in the Irish Sea. Fortunately we managed to get tickets for the second gig there 3 days later. It was of course a fantastic gig & the beautiful hall provided wonderful acoustics.

@@marillion335 Yeah, I saw it. Bummer, but mvsik is personal. It's amazing how differently two people can feel about such a little string of notes. It's like taking a long walk together and and the very end he east into his house and I turned west into mine, but knowing the next walk will be enjoyable, too.
I hope, especially if he listens again in light of what he said WRT the lyrics, he might get to like it. It's always nicer to have one more thing to provide some enjoyment. I'm glad he liked the rest.
It's also amazing (good or bad) that I have so much to say about a "little string of notes." ;-)

Interestingly, RW is playing in the key of E Minor, even though the actual pitch is D Minor. Obviously, the key was transposed down to make it easier for JA to sing, but RW didn't want to re-learn the whole thing in D Minor, and decided to transpose the keyboard(s) down a whole tone so he could finger in the original key.

I,ve counted at least 3 korg kronos The most powerful keyboard today eith splits, layers, setlists, sampler. Does he need every keyboard shown here or is something related with the visual scene of stage? Great performance anyway!

Not playing that Howe signature tag at the very end is sacrilegious. Rabin doesn’t do these magical masterpieces justice. I was at this show in The Netherlands and I really missed Steve.

Fantastic. Is it just me, or did Rick add more notes into some of the runs in the first few minutes? If you have "finger memory", how easy does that make it to transpose key? OT. I'm appalled at what I read last night of the treatment of Billy Sherwood and the complete lack of professionalism and civility of two of the players here in various interviews and comments. I'd love to see Trevor play, but the other two egos are simply too big. How can THIS be the "reunion" when you are using two session/road musicians?

After hearing this version you do appreciate Alan Whites style. This drummer is good but the toms in the beginning seem to heavy handed and White seems to hold back in the big crescendos near the end more but that may be not even the drummers call here. I just really like the Montreux versiin that last crescendo at the end was so held back it wasn't so tempo conscious ad this one, which made it momentus. Rick always plays the section w the crotales different in every live version Ive seen. Heard in an interview that Jon would say play it like you did on the album but Rick would just nod, lol. So i guess that area is like a solo of sorts. But anyway I always wondered how Bruford would've played this tune if he were still the drummer in Yes.

I 've seen them in France in the summer of 2017, I was so happy to hear them again, it was nearly at home but…. I've seen them five or six times i think but this time i' m sorry to have to say this, but it was awful, I think Rick was drunk… He was always late and seemed completely lost at moments, I felt really sorry for them, everything sounded totally approximative excepted Jon who was really here him,... must have been felt really alone this evening. My best souvenir is still their concert in Montreux in 2003, it was another group, and another planet :^(

Steve Howe and Jon Anderson are credited with writing this tune, but I would give Rick some songwriting credit, as his parts in this song are so pivotal to it's nature. Other than that, I'm concerned about Rick's health. He's looking large, and for someone his age, it's not a formula for longevity. Regardless, the guy is a legend as far as I'm concerned.

Clive ~ GREAT comment! l agree! Wakey was the ''completion'' of Yes! He was the last _perfect_ member to join the group, and took them places no one ever DREAMED! He's HANDS DOWN my favourite member ...along with Bruford! His solo compositions were/are flippin' wonderful! l just watch Wakeman ''Made in Cuba'' on YT, and ITS THEE BEST SHOW I'VE EVER SEEN HIM DO!! The musicians he chose took his music to a _whole knew level!!_ lts like hearing them for the first time!! You've GOT to see it!!!!

Fantastic to see ARW giving this their treatment, but I have to agree with other comments about this not really building on the original. If you watch the 'making of GftO' series, the level of detail that went into layering the keys on Awaken (particularly), and the subsequent paring down of the guitars (the making of vid shows Howe totally overplaying bits and still sussing things out), makes you really appreciate the balance they struck with the album in general and Awaken particularly. It really blows the lid off everything else they did before or after. Funny, people always cite CttE as their best album (for good reason), but personally, I find myself listening to GftO more often. I've grown bored of CttE for some reason.

who is playing the chimes or bells?

Jon Anderson is playing the harp.

    • @oriza2
      @oriza2 7 лет назад +2

That is clear, yes. but the chimes are probably played by the drummer. it is funny, as he is loosing the head of the mallet and throws it to the back at 0:55. You can even hear the sound of the stick hitting the floor. :)
Than he starts to play some kind of bells fixed to his kit, but the camera moves to Rick.
(by the way, he is a great drummer, I was there, and he blew my brain - like the rest of the band. his solo was absolutely crazy.)

In this case, the drummer & percussionist are one and the same, since ARW has no separate percussionist.

Apparently Trevor doesn't realize the great importance of the final delicate guitar notes played by Steve in the original version. However, not playing them probably was better anyway, because only Steve can put the sensitivity and magic in the music he created with Yes. I was at this concert one day later in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Enjoyed it thoroughly, this song is still magic.

Yup always loved that little almost bluesy touch at the end it nicely ends the giant chords just played.
