  • With two outs and runners on first and second in the bottom of the 7th and final inning, Trine Junior Catcher Victoria Porter threw the ball back to Senior Pitcher Kate Saupe. Saupe faked a throw to second and several infielders and outfielders sold the fake by diving and sprinting towards the outfield fence. The Geneseo baserunner took off for third and Saupe, still holding the ball, tagged her out to win the NCAA DIII Super Regional Championship. Trine advances to the Championship round in Tyler, Texas next weekend!

    As someone who has excitedly watched baseball and softball games for over sixty years, I'll say that this play is surely one of the greatest plays I have ever seen! I watched this video over and over and I couldn't believe how well the Trine catcher, Victoria Porter, the Trine pitcher, Kate Saupe, and the rest of the team with their frantic hollering, carried out the ruse to absolute perfection! I have never seen the Hidden Ball Play done with such precision! Congratulations, Trine! Now, girls, continue to do well in the Championship round next weekend in Tyler, Texas. I'll be rooting for you!

    • @brucemercer7753
      @brucemercer7753 5 лет назад

      Not really. Once his Runner gets up and turns to 3rd and takes a STEP the trap is set.
      It is either a Rundown or a quick toss to 2nd for an easy Tag.
      No time for the Runner to TURN AROUND AGAIN and get back or make it to 3rd.
      No time for a Coach to get his players attention and reverse her momentum in time.
      You have to remember this Offensive team is TRAILING in the last inning of a Championship Game.
      Not Softball team gets to a State Championship game without being AGGRESSIVE running the bases.
      The Coaching it takes to get your team to be aggressive as 2nd Nature and to react to this play the way they did cannot be turned on a dime like you suggest.
      This IS NOT baseball where caution is stressed on the bases to avoid outs like this.
      These ARE NOT 90 foot Base Paths... only 60 feet.
      In Softball a passed ball like this is an EASY free base every time (except when it is this Trick Play).
      In Baseball... those extra 30 feet is a HUGE difference.
      In Baseball... a Double Play is ROUTINE because they happen so often... enough for a Golf Clap due to the 90 feet between bases.
      In Softball... a Double Play can be RARE (unless an Infielder catches a Line Driver or can field a fast rolling grounder next to their base and then fire to 1st.)

      They were tricked into believing the pitcher threw the ball to second and she missed the catch. The center fielder dove to the ground pretending to backstop the errant throw. The girl advancing from second to third was tagged out. It's a play on the hidden ball trick.

    • @markallred997
      @markallred997 5 лет назад +4

      The pitcher pretended to throw the runner leading off out at 2nd but kept the ball in her mitt. Everyone else sold the fake out by pretending it was over thrown into the outfield. The runner at 2nd saw everyone scrambling to get the "ball" and tried to advance to third base but the pitcher (still holding the ball) tagged her on the way to third. Brilliant way to end a close game. The other team had tieing runs on base so if the hitter knocked it over the fence they would have won 3-2.

      Catcher acted like trying to pick the runner off at second with throw to second. But catcher threw to pitcher instead. Pitcher turned and fake threw to 2nd. But short stop and 2nd base acted like throw to them from pitcher was over thrown into the outfield. Outfielders acted like they were chasing the ball that pitcher overthrew. 2nd running to outfield after imaginary ball. Rf and cf running at 2nd baseman like they all running for the ball. Short looking out into center waiting to get cut off throw. Runner sees all this and thinks the ball rolled out to outfield and was gonna try running home to tie game. But pitcher had ball whole time and ran and tagged runner on way to third for last out of game. And win. Great team effort. 1st base and lf only 1s not involved. Cause I bet 3rd base was on bag for throw from pitcher if pitcher missed the tag. And catcher should've been ready to run back up 3rd in run down event. At which point 1st would've ran to cover home. Left field should've been running to back up over throw at 3rd if pitcher missed tag. And short would've blocked 2nd and helped in run down. So really a real big whole team involved trick play to bait the runner into a trap.

    • @SgtJoeSmith
      @SgtJoeSmith 5 лет назад

      I researched. I think it was left that dove in shallow center like she was trying to stop the over throw. I'm sure they practiced all year by actually over throwing ball to see how and when everyone reacts to get timing down. So someone didn't dive to soon

    I came here thinking... "hidden ball play" that is illegal AND/OR cannot happen in Softball, can it?"
    But I was thinking of a different type of Hidden Ball play. This isn't the play I had in mind.
    This play IS/WAS legal.
    I think you would have to call it a "Ball Fake Play" (or a better name than that) and not a Hidden Ball Play. This requires slight of hand by the Pitcher and some Acting by the Short Stop and 2nd Basement etc etc. It is MORE than a "Hidden Ball Play".
    The OFFICIAL "Hidden Ball Play" only requires that the Pitcher appear to take a Hand-Off of the Ball by ether the 1st or 3rd Basemen and walk back to the MOUND and delay stepping on the Pitcher's Plate. Then you wait until the Base Runner steps off bag to get their LEAD and then TAG HIM and reveal that you have the Ball on 1st or 3rd (which ever base you are on).
    You could not do THIS in Softball because it is illegal for the Base Runner to take a LEAD... it is an OUT in Softball if the Runner leaves the base before the Pitcher releases the ball during a PITCH. So the Runner is NOT going to step off the base for the play to work.
    So. Once again. Legal. Great play call. Congrats to the Winners. Condolences to the Losers.
    Just NOT the "Hidden Ball Play". Opinions? Know something I don't or that I left out?
    I am trying to learn everything I can about the game and to share what I know.

      It happened too fast AND played on the strategic difference between Running Bases in Softball and Running them in Baseball. Distance between bases in Baseball 90 feet... Softball 60 feet.
      So in Softball being what might appear "overly aggressive" and "wrong" in Baseball is the best strategy (most of the time) in Softball.
      (Assuming it is NOT a TRICK PLAY.)
      Getting to 3rd there in Softball is 30 to 40 steps (depending on Runner) and a great THROW and TAG.
      The same play in Baseball is 45 to 55 steps and a very likely great THROW and TAG because of the Arm Strength and Distance.
      In Baseball you are just happy to be safe at 2nd Base. You don't want to run yourself out of the game.
      In Softball you are always looking to manufacture a score by running. The shorter distance between the bases makes this a higher pressure throw and more difficult throw to 3rd.

    Sounds like the Trine coach yells out "GET IT!", which triggers the runner to check center field, and then take off. Prior to hearing that, the runner wasn't sold on anything. I think that runner's reaction comes as a result of the coach's 'interference' on the play. If the yelling is taken out, I'm not sure that runner takes off. It's a well-executed play, but it's more than a bit dubious that the coach was involved in the play like that. I'm calling bush league on this.

      @@jsilva7005 If they finished their atbat, they're done (if they put the ball in play or got struck out, hit by the pitch or walked). But if the 3rd out occurs on anything else (a runner caught stealing most of the time), then the atbat is not complete and the same batter will come back as the first next inning with an empty count.
      Hope this is readable and understandable...

      The is no rule that prohibits such a play, so there is no "gist" to consider.

    This is called a legal, yet wholly *_dishonorable_* win. Nothing here to cheer about -- not unless you enjoy fundamentally unfair play. Deking is part of the game. Wholesale orchestrated malfeasance is shameful.

    Kinda shitty that you can't win by playing well, so you practice a trick play to win. My teams wouldn't celebrate a win like that especially in a championship game.

      If they where only one or two runs behind this has to be one of the most embarrassing plays I've ever seen. But the fact that they didn't give the final score makes me think it wasn't close.
