I have to disagree vehemently with the red meat causing uric acid to rise. I had gout several years ago. Since going ketovore no flares whatsoever with no medication for the past eight years. Even before going keto I ate a lot of meat, and always get my uric acid levels tested and it is normal. The beer and fructose most definitely raises uric acid. Dr. Perlmutter has a new book on this.
Unfollowing them for this misinformation.
Agreed
Thank you as I was shocked when he said that.
Dr Lustig: PROVE to me that red meat is the cause of High Uric levels.
@@dmw7717hi it’s not Miss information at all. Everyone is disagreeing but red meat & organ can trigger for some but maybe that wasn’t her trigger so she was fine with eating meat although red meat is on the top list for high purines. I have gout and I have to always follow a list of what I can eat or I will get a flare up! People who disagree with a post doesn’t mean it’s meant for someone else to join in on it. But maybe because you may not know anything about the gout. What works for you may not work someone else that’s Y I said what I said. Jus saying my opinion ❤
Gundry comes off about the same way
Not a problem on a zero carb diet.
Yep.👍 doctors like this just never cease to amaze me with their disinformation.
@@loriegosnell9355he may be simply ignorant. He certainly has an agenda. I’ve been ketavore for a year or so, no gout. Slim and, dare I say, beautiful
@@loriegosnell9355do you know who this guy is? He pushes the ketovore diet...all natural whole foods.. red meat does raise uric acid levels but if youre already healthy it wont effect you. Dont be ignorant lol
@@jeffreyadams648read his book metabolical.. he is a biochemical doctor
@@loriegosnell9355my understanding is this particular doctor is not anti-red meat. He is mostly anti-sugar, specifically fructose. He should have clarified the degree to which red meat creates uric acid, which is probably not much relatively. Or at least it’s not a huge problem if everything else in the diet is cleaned up.
I suffered a lot from gout for decades. Finally discovered great advice on RUclips about low carb no sugar. No problems with gout since .
please . what is your food routine and how many times you eat per day
@@banyaiaIF with this plan. Works for me.
Sugars the culprit behind all diseases. I use natural tea and fibre to get my gut metabolic healthy
Lucky you! I could not get red of it

Red meat isn’t the problem! It’s called sugar, high fructose corn syrup, refined flours, seed oils, fast foods, packaged foods loaded with artificial colors and flavorings, etc!
Stop blaming red meat for what sugar does to people!
Dayum right.
Most meat puts me into trouble. Sleep apnea skyrockets in meat. I’m on nutrition with fish on weekends.
You are right. I've come to same conclusion about my T2D. I still am trying to reverse it, not just manage it which a keto diet does but so far no luck. Sick of people calling managing a problem a cure. They are different things.
I eat mostly red meat on keto. My uric acid was 2.9 (out of range low) and my BP is routinely 110/73. In this N of 1, red meat doesn’t cause high uric acid.
I eat red meat and fish and beer and i have high 9.9 uric acid. Not all people are same.. update . i begin to eat two times per day. do not eat breakfast . went back to workout but not very hard not everyday . uric acid become less . i even drink beer now and then I eat beef as well . . this is my experience .i am 113 kg. 185 cm
Try removing sugar and beer for a month and retest. I had higher uric acid before going carnivore. Now I'm 4.6 uric acid level on red meat, seafood but no sugar or beer.@@banyaia
@@banyaia Dude, get rid of the beer! Beer is bad for you in MANY ways and is probably a main cause of your high uric acid!
I agree same with me.when I stopped the carbs now I have no more gout

High carb raises uric acid.
No.
I only eat red meat and I don’t have Gout or high blood pressure. I’ve been eating like this for months now 🤷🏻♂️

If red meat was an issue our ancestors would have had all these chronic issues.
Agree with Dr. Lustig on all but one point.
Agree that high fructose corn syrup elevates uric acid and causes fatty liver, diabetes, and everything Dr. Lustig notes.
Disagree that red meat elevates uric acid. Grass fed beef is one of the healthiest things you can eat
The issue of uric acid is real and must be taken seriously. The real blame goes to high fructose corn syrup.
I agree
I agree 💯. I'm carnivore with red meat, organs and seafood. My uric acid is normal because I don't consume sugar, carbs or alcohol.
I head The Grass fed cow say;" I m the Healthiest!😅
I had the same thought but now I wonder if he meant that red meat (on a SAD or “regular “ non carnivore diet) is bad news.
Because saturated fat is the same way. sat fat is villainized even though we know that in a low carb diet saturated fat is 💯 healthy and fine. But saturated fat + carbs is what gets people full of inflammation and sick.
L carnatine is found in red meat and is known to keep the door open to the mitochondria so fat can be burned as energy. The solution to pollution is dilution. Drink a gallon of good water per day.. Eat clean, exercise and sleep to recover it really is that simple. Carbs (rice, sweet potatoes, oats), lean protein😂 and good fat sources relative to your caloric needs. To reduce body fat, reduce calories 200 to 500 per day. Stay hydrated
It’s not a red meat problem it’s an insulin resistance problem and fructose causes the hyperuricemia
Agreed
Lol, lecturing Dr. Lustig on fructose and insulin resistance... 😂
Processed foods, sugar, high fructose corn syrup ( in many processed foods) are the culprit. A doctor in Corpus Christi Tx. ( who years ago was a resident at the county hospital there, Memorial Hospital) has an amazing practice. All of his patients that give these food up, heal their bodies and get healthy and off meds.
Easy? NO! But when you tire of living sick and tired you will do it.
❤ Thank you.
Thanks for sharing -you rock!!
Right on
Exactly! So true, I'm on day 5 with no carbs, sugar or seed oils, feeling great already 😊
I think he meant excessive red meat. But do people who are on the carnivore diet have elevated uric acid levels on a constant basis? Do they have gout issue? High blood pressure? Fatty liver disease? To my knowledge that’s not an issue with carnivores.
you know what lowers uric acid a lot? Potassium. Lots of potassium. Miniumum requirements are now 4700 ml . I take 5 grams. My blood pressure has gone down considerably. I also take a gram of magnesium glycinate.
right. potassium and magnesium are absolutely important
don't forget the salt!

Never have I seen a time where we cannot eat properly unless we consult with a doctor or scientist
This is from the standard American diet not keto or carnivore in my experience it’s from high carb and sugars in all due respect 😢
I just dont know what to believe anymore. Mainstream medical professionals’ advice always seems to be the opposite of what I’ve learned is healthy and makes me feel good
Believe your body it will eliminate symptoms on a grass fed meat diet
Why are you listening to mainstream medical personnel? They don’t know nutrition? They don’t care about nutrition. They care about giving you diagnosis and selling you some drugs. That’s where it stops.
Listen to Dr Gill. He is brilliant and will explain the science. ruclips.net/user/NutritionMadeSimplevideos
Dehydration is also cause uri. Acid levels to go up ,we. Might be drinking a lot of water and peeing it out because of which we loose electrolytes which has to be replaced otherwise uric acid levels to go high.
My Dr told me to start drinking lots of water I’m starting 2-3 litres a day to flush out the high uric acid crystals
I had kidney stones removed many years ago so yeah I’m only 33
😊 Also stop drinking Soda
Roberts education is very good in helping me solve my own medical dilemmas, getting to the root cause of disease. The exact opposite of what general practitioners do. Treating symptoms with drugs. Education is the key to getting older gracefully.
Where is the full interview? I would like to hear the rest of this talk please
Levelshealth channel or levels dr. Lustig has been explaining on his own RUclips
It’s new to me that he includes red meat
Doc you are right on everything but this! You are giving the effects of high uric acid. The cause of gout is sugar which increases uric acid crystals not the meat itself. I’ve been eating 90% meat for 6 months no gout. Drank 2 glasses of wine for the first time in 6 months ,gout attack .
Me too. Beer makes me and sea food make gout attack.
😊🎉 comments are great, Question what diet helps to eliniate feet neuropathy ?
Don't smoke, eat red meat, no carbs, reduce oxolates, no booze, herbs for nerves, red ginsing, ashwaganda
Carnivore and intermittent fasting.
Red meat doesn't cause my uric acid levels to go up. My holistic doctor changed my diet to low glycemic organic fruits and vegetables, organic/grass fed meats and eggs, uncured bacon, half medium sweet potato or white potato per day, no processed food, cooking with butter and lard with a 50 carb count per day; meals at noon and 5pm. I went from a 9.5 to a 3.3 uric acid level in 1.5 years! Meat was a huge part of the diet because it's zero carbs. Hamburger and steak are a staple in my diet. I did learn that fasting too long can actually bring on a gout attack!
Everyone is different. I used to get about 4 attacks per year until I stopped eating chicken breast, dinner rolls, lamb, sweet chocolates, candy, pop and sugary drinks. No issues with beer but no more than half a bottle of red wine. I drink about 3 liter of water a day with some apple cider vinegar mixed into it. Whenever I feel an attack brewing I would chuggle a liter of water in 30 minutes and that will get me off the hook.
What do you eat now? 😂
I get gout through eating tomatoes ? and they still do not know why . I dont eat red meat or drink beer .
After eating red meat , and my blood pressure stays low . Sugar gaves me high blood pressure. Beer sugar , alcohol, are the bad ones .
I routinely take a Tart Cherry supplement just to control uric acid. Thanks for the heads up.
Me too !!!

What is Tart Cherry supplement please can it be taken directly
@@pandyak70 yes you can buy Tart Cherry capsules where you buy vitamins.

Interesting information. Thank you Dr.
Red meat will not cause these issues when consumed in a Carnivore or low carb ketogenic diet since the Randle cycle will not activate as readily.
Just lost a loved one whose signs of gout, elevated BP, and erectile dysfunction should have caused siren warning of the direction he was headed. He was anti MD sadly. Despite his regular vigorous exercise succumbed alone to what was assumed to be atherosclerosis

This is literally THE GUY who fights to change our global diet ..
Red meat in moderation is no problem.
Was the red meat consumed between a burger bun? With seed oil fried potatoes? Because then the elevated uric acid makes sense.
Losing weight rapidly can dramatically increase Uric Acid which serves as a counterregularory agent (insulin resistance). People with normal UA may have their UA go from 5 to 10 on a 1000 kcal daily deficit.
Hello, I am interested in what you have mentioned about losing weight rapidly and having elevated uric acid levels. Recently, I have lost so much weight, as a result of hyperthyroidism and probably type 2 diabetes. Can you direct me to any related readings on this please? Or can you tell me more about this.
It’s always sugar that kicks off my gout
I suffer from gout and I didn’t eat meat, drink alcohol or consume a lot of high fructose. I would love to know what’s really causing it, definitely not any of those foods
The issue is the randle cycle, combining excess carbs and fats together.
Yes , only if you eat carbs and meat randle cycle
High wisdom!
My gout flareup is triggered mostly by eating shellfish. My Mom flares up when she eats Mung Beans. I am not affected by Mung Beans in moderation (hehehe). Thank you Dr. Lustig for pointing out that high levels of uric acid is a factor in my high blood pressure
What's your take on fasting to overcome this ?
Thank you for clearly explaining.
I just had a blood test and my uric acid is too low, and i eat red meat.
Becaus red meat isn’t the issue. This short is false
Robert lustig isn't right about everything.so he's saying our ancesters that ate alot of red meat walked around with gout pain.makes no sense

Keto for 2 years, gout in big toe gone, achieved very healthy weight and feel good. Recently had a weeks holiday, ate carbs again Boom...big toe was painful by end of week.
Lesson relearned.
You’re an excellent, succinct teacher
Clean your diet first.
Go keto or low carb.
Remove refined carbs, sugar, lessen fruits cook/boil your veggies for less oxalates.
Less root crops
Less additives on you meats
Remove seed oils
Get more sun
Walk more
Shed the excess weight or fat.
Thank you.
Hm. I consume 90 percent red meat, fermented vegetables and some carbs (very moderately- in the form of blueberries & other berries.) going on 5 years now, have never ever had gout. I also fast quite often.
Does anyone happen to know how long the levels may stay high for? I’ve had blood work done but always comes back normal but I have all the symptoms of gout.
I cut way back on sugars and my blood pressure and heart rate dropped to normal rates.
My uric acid went down after starting red meat. Chicken raised it
So does this mean high uric acid, if left untreated, could eventually result to diabetes? Becus of the insulin resistance and all
Insulin resistance or metabolic syndrone.
How do you check your ua levels at home?
😊 PH level urine test strips
He is right on the consequences of high uric acid but not for the reasons that causes it
how do you lower it down, that uric acid, ty
i got a fairly high (350ish average) level of uric acid (even after 35 hours fasting) yet my BP is 105/65 average, 44/M, BMI 23
How to test at home
Do any of you take allopurinol ? Would you ? Can you REALLY lower Uric acid levels by cutting all alcohol
and carbs?
What would you have us to eat, Dr. Lustig???
Uric acid follows fun is what I got from that 😂
I don’t eat meat, pork chicken, ever, I hardly ever drink limit my sugar intake by eating very little if any processed food yet I have to take allopurinol to deal with my gout
😊 try increase dark greens with each meal
Eat more fibers every time you consume carb and drink plenty of water in between meals
If this is the case, how come carnivores who eat primarily red meat, reverse their insulin resistance, lose the weight, and have no plaque in their arteries?
But what causes LOW uric acid?
Recent double blind studies show largest contributor to rising uric acid levels is watching RUclips doctors repeating the results of the latest observational uric acid study.
What about fruits and honey???
Why don’t I have gout then?
I’m curious too
Genetic predisposition or in your case, not.
Greatly respect him but this isn't carnivore diet.
This is on a Standard American Diet. Salt does this also.
He is an idealist.
Carnivore diet 2 years. My BP remains at around 95/65. No gout. My mum suffered gout on no red meat, beer or alcohol, only a little fruit or sugar, but higher carb, low fat.
My mother as well
If it’s organic and grass fed, read meats are good and has a lot of health benefits than leafy vegetables! Doc please review your research and you may discuss with “Paul Saladino MD”
All I do is eat red meat, and about 4 to 5 eggs a day, and I can't get my blood pressure high enough as I constantly struggle with low blood pressure and anaemia. What the heck is wrong with my body. I literally ate a POUND of beef along with 4 eggs and a half a tub of ice cream yesterday and I am lethargic today. What is wrong with me?

Hi from Australia, Dr Lustig 😎
I'm overwhelmed with the contradictory advice by doctors.
I don't know what to believe anymore.
Bye, bye, Red Meat, I already said goodbye to alcohol.
Reduce or eliminate red meat if you have issues with gout. Sugar is not the problem.
My uric acid level was 10.4 then I was prescribed Febuxostat tablets for 30 days, when I went back to the hospital it dropped to 4.6 and the doctor told me to discontinue the medicine. Now after 10 days it increased to 8.7. what should I do
😊change u diet
But also grains can cause it which have zero fructose or red meat. So what , should we only eat vegetables.
The carnivore and ketovores are getting better from their gout. So I would assume that elevated uric acid happens to those who consume a significant amount of carbs. Idk the mechanism but I suspect that’s what it is. This is the problem with different studies nowadays, they don’t qualify the amount of carb intake of the study subject. Low carb is so important in metabolic health but majority of Americans ( even those eating healthy) consume a lot of carbs everyday.
For me rice and bread is the main cause of gout
Lustigs pod with Huberman was a disaster. Watch Layne Nortons analysis
He forgot to mention “pork meat”
So much confusion, what to eat what not to. I just try to stay hungry.
Great podcast as always.
However I find a few statements/datas don’t stand strong, such as: fructose is absolutely of no use to the body (eudurance and probiotic benefit) Kuwait has 80% obesity rate in adults (about 40% according to NIH and WHO), 10 trillian cells in human body (36 t on average according to multiple papers) etc etc..
Robert being so black and white on some fundamentally wrong stats and facts really hurt his overall credibility. I understand he’s an expert and 90% of info is probably correct, but being able to say I don’t know is just so important for anyone, especially academics.
How does it select the big toe?
High acid PH levels
That’s interesting I don’t need meat I only eat eggs and veggies and some grains not a lot and I still believe I have uric acid because I have a big toe very very big which usually is created from too much uric acid and I have no idea where it is coming from
Would like to know how they determined red meat to be a factor. Most people that are carnivore, including myself, would disagree.
That is right if you eat réd meat or even any kind of meat at NIGHT or for dîner! It is Not à problem if you eat your meat at lunch time! (Chrononutrition by Dr. Alain DELABOS)
Why is us the carnivore trend touting healing of conditions and diaease?
I've high uric acid and low blood pressure
I have 2. Normal is ph7.
this doctors all say what causes baut dont say how get rid of it
a lot of my family members has all these symphtom
If you suffer from chronic gout and go full on carnivore why does the gout stop ?????
Because you cut the sugar lol. Cant you tell its a combo of all of these things excessively? Plus on carnivore you typically eat less. Think bro
So, red meat is NOT good to consume? Please explicate…
Excess red meat and especially organs are rich in purines and saturated fats. If you eat them too often your uric acid will start increasing and your LDL too. Check purines metabolism. Also fibers are crucial. The advice is to eat less red meat yes. More fiber. It's biochemistry not pharma money.
When in doubt, just dont eat a.k.a fast. Let your body rest and balance all the imbalance within. Fast 24 hours regularly, and 72 hours as a therapy once in a while.
Well, professor Lustig, don’t we need that energy for body functions??🤔
We need that energy which warms up our body and our organs in order to function, makes us to be able to move, grow and live!!🤗👏👏😏😨
