Love it that you guys in the US also enjoy tuning those old turbo diesels!
Ive got a MK1 Caddy (rabbit pickup truck) and also tuned the pump a little bit, it was quite a common thing to do back in the days here.
Greetings from germany
Cheers to that 🍺 I appreciate you sharing!
What do you use your truck for?
@@OliverFetter I use it for carrying my motorcycles, construction materials and everything that does not fit in my mk2 Golf. I also have a removable camping drop-off cabin I use on holidays.
Pretty useful and cheap to maintain truck
Hell yeah that's dope!! I'm inspired
Pretty motor you got there! Nice tuning video. I just dropped my 1.6td into a 92 4runner!
Hell yeah that sounds like a cool project
That thing sounds awesome
Thanks man!!
Love this thing!
Glad it does it for ya 😄
I have the AAZ 1.9TD engine swapped in my mk2 Golf. With K24 turbo. heavy duty clutch. Rover tdi boostpin. and Mercedes van intercooler. It goes good! The best i could get with my setup is 6,9 seconds from 0 to 100kph. If you want more power. You can try a Giles pump. They are mechanicly different in the inside with a larger rotor inside. I didn't do the governor mod.
Only downside is. After 2 pulls. The coolant temp rises. I used a new large radiator. Never added coolant. But i think it something to do with EGT temp.
Sounds like your working on some dope stuff man! Keep it going.
That rabbit is badass
i like the inter cooler mounting location , differant but an idea
Yeah it was alright, kinda a corner cut 🙈 I have since relocated it to front mount bc it wouldn't work if the windows were up haha
Love the build ive got a daily 81 rabbit diesel with the o2o trans really curious about the dash set up you have
Nice! Right on. It's actually the o.g. vw dashboard, stripped of vinyl and customized with a saw, plywood, and a lot of patience 💯💯💯
My first and second car. I badly want one again with either a vtec 2.2 or a diesel turbo
Let’s goooooooo
I worked in a mercedes shop 20 years ago all the diesels coming thru the shop back then, I have a 300cd turbo coup and a 300d euro non turbo
I sold the usa turbo car it was slow till the turbo kicked in the rain the back end had less predictable control. The euro non turbo had better consistent power and a 4 speed gear box and differential change for city driving it was very adequate.
Now with UK diesel pump for me4cedes my next diesel will be a turbo with the high boost pump and 4 speed gearbox and much lower Rear differential gear g for good highway cruising sedqn.i have a 504 wagon diesel xd90 I love ,but it's not a highway cruiser.the 240D is the turtle a non highway car... lblew up a dasher in the 80s was never happy with vw diesels, seemed to ez to blow up. And non turbo at that.
Sheeew you've done lots of it. The VW's sure do like to blow up when you get into it :/
Put timing piston spacer on both side and go for governor mode and put golf mk4 1.9 96kw intake manifold
For more fuel go for 11mm or 12mm pump head
Put spacers in or remove them?
Badass love it i am defentlly going to suscribe what state is this in
Thanks! That was in NH, car is in Colorado these days!
Nice diesel
Thanks m8 🍺🍺🍺
Was this on upper or lower river road I recognize this road
Giles fuel pump would do that car well and a k24 turbo I have a similar build keep it up
A Giles pump is in the car and has not been doing it well 💁
Turn up the High Boost enrichment screw on top of the injection pump..
You can use a 6 speed transmission out of a 2019 gasser jetta. FYI in case you ever want to swap
Are you in Wilton nh? I recognize the area
soo cool. iim an SB engine on my cadduy i am putting an mls gasket on
Hell yeah!
Rips.
Man watching this reminds me of my old VE 12v Cummins.
Ever seen or heard of an Audi I5 2.0TD? I'm looking at one seems fairly simple to tune.
Heck yeah man. I have not heard/seen the Audi sounds badass!
The 2.0 audi 5 cylinder is the 1.6 vw with one more piston same internals they are a beast
Metal duct tape for the grill upgrade. Get it looking like billet
great explanation of the fuel adjustment. is this setting for idle or or will it affect higher rpms? my cummins b 3.3 non turbo has some power loss and won't rev more than 1800rpm under load.
fuel filters are clean and clear.
cheers
Turning in the fuel screw increases fuel delivery across all rpm's, that's why you need to turn the idle speed back down to balance it. I'm not sure how to diagnose your problem but I feel like start by making sure the timing is within spec, could always make a Diesel run slow/weak. Turning the fuel screw in will perk it up regardless 💁
@@OliverFetter thanks Oliver
Like the straight forward description of the two screws and the rev hang. Is the diaphragm on top of the injection pump just for turbo diesels?
Yeah
@@dylanfox7077 I'm gathering turbo injection pumps are rare while normal aspirated pumps seem to be quite common. What are the drawbacks of running a normally aspirated injection pump on a 1.6 turbo diesel? Less horsepower?
Yees the diaphragm is the differentiator
@@herkybc130 **steals reply (sorry 😬)** the diaphragm is what matches fuel to boost, ie with more airflow you need more fuel as well to have more combustion.
You can adjust the fuel to match full boost but the down side of having no boost compensator is that when the fuel is adjusted to match full boost it will be smokey when off boost
Great stuff man! I have so many questions 😂 I own a mk2 Jetta that has a 1996 AAZ 1.9 swap. Been working on it none stop and you videos have definitely helped. Maybe there’s a way I could ask you everything somewhere else? Either way I’ll start by asking about the Giles pump. What did you have him make the pump too? When he asked me he said he could set it to 10 or 15psi, of course I said 15... now I’m seeing guys run 32psi on these engines. How much is it gonna take for my pump to reach that? Do love your car and your content!
Yo! You could dm me on the gram if you have a ton of questions @ollys_auto. I haven't worked with any 1.9's. I had Giles remove the governor when he rebuilt it and set it up for 20+ psi if I remember correctly. I appreciate the hype! Glad you like it
A lot of it is how you tune the pump in! I have a couple spare n/a pumps that I'm gonna dissect this week to see what's going on 🙈 it's just Bosch not rocket science (or at least that's the hope).
It seems like you could use this older pump on the newer style 1.9, and not have to deal with an ECU. What are your thoughts?
Yooo nh! I live in nh I just picked up a 1.6d mk1 caddy
Hype!! thats awesome
I have a 1.6TD with a 5 speed trans. I have a turbo back exhaust. I am going to use this vid for a pump tune, thanks. Could you do a video for the fuel pump governor mod. Would you recommend? thanks again, good stuff!!!
Love it man! I have a guiles pump so I actually haven't had to do the governor mod? I would recommend it though, it really wakes up the motor since there is ample fueling throughout the whole RPM band
Reindexing the throttle can buy you so much more power than gov mod.
@@fastinradfordable how is this done?
You just put the arm on the pump back a few clicks with respect to it's original position.
impressive boost level. do you have a list of full mods? i'm looking to increase the output of my 1.6TD vanagon. i'm not looking for speed. just power to get over the mountains.
What modifications are you interested in? I've done a bunch!!
@@OliverFetter sorry, i wasn't paying attention to notifications. since posting message i've ordered parts to switch over from the cy mishmash on my vanagon to the jx setup. current setup leaks oil in multiple places.
i'll have to get back to this once i get all the parts installed.
I’m just curious your thoughts about putting the older mark one style lift pump on a newer 1.9 TDI, it seems like you have more tune ability with the older style pump.
Depends what you're looking for, generally a 1.9 can make more power because of the computerized pump - makes it easier to provide more fuel. With the 1.6 you start to run into rev hang as a limiting factor for fueling because it increases in a linear fashion
@@OliverFetter tHANKS BUD, KEEP UP THE CONTENT!
Can you tell me something...I got a spare pump from a automatic mk4 tdi with 110hp with the bigger 11mm injector elements...can they fit in a AAN mk3 pump that i plan putting on a mk2 1.6td with a bigger turbo and some other shit(3in straight pipe, intake, arp studs,1.9 head....)
I have not a damn clue my friend 🤯 you'll probably just have to give it a try!!
Have you done anything to the stock blow off valve built into the intake manifold? Have you added your own?
Yessir it's just blocked off. I have the valve force-shut with a bolt. Its not particulairly helpful OEM feature.
@@OliverFetter yea the wastegate should be enough. I plugged my old 1.6td with a rubber expanding pipe plug and it worked great, made a little bit of room too. I was only asking because your car makes a whoosh when you get off throttle - none of my TD cars made that sound and I was wondering how you did it
howd you get it to smoke so much? i've got a 1.6td ecodiesel and adjusting the fuel screw hardly makes it smoke anymore than it already did. Pump was just rebuilt, when i had the old pump on it smoked like a damn train
Ya gotta CRANK the fuel screw till your getting rev hang, then turn your idle speed down, then repeat.
I got a 82 that someone put a turbo on and im looking to put a bigger turbo on it. Whats a good upgrade?
What turbo is on it now? The stock TD?
I love your videos I'm from spain i have one mk2 1.6td i sant more Power hehehehe
Hell yeah man! 😁 You should do it
Also woundering what the plan for the car is
Stay tuned for that next vid 😳 but the flavor is racing -> breaking -> building, as a cycle!
What turbo do you run, I have a Garret T3 on my golf, but i think it is very lazy...
Add a manual boost controller and add some fueling, it will be much more responsive
GT2052! T3's can be laggy depending on what motor you have
I wonder what the EGTs were at 30psi. If it hits 30psi without getting to 1200F on the EGT gauge you are pumping in too much air and creating backpressure. My Rabbit TD actually goes faster at 15psi than if I run it up to higher boost. I've had it up to 35. It went slower.
You're on the ball Oscar! This is exactly what I found since this video. I actually blew this turbo up bc the overspool + back pressure was so bad. Now it makes closer to ~24 in a much smoother more powerful way.
did you modify or block off the blow off valve? i just finished installing new parts on my cy engine. but the blow off valve is limiting boost at 10psi. the new turbocharger should be higher.
Yes, when I was using the TD manifold I think I replaced the adjustment screw with a longer bolt so it stays entirely closed off 👍 that's cool!
@@OliverFetter I'll check on that after work.
here's my mess. i'm still hitting a limit of 10psi with new turbocharger from brickwerks. made in denmark.

Is it a stock motor I got a 81 rabbit and want to put a turbo on it got a turbo motor and 5 speed out of a jetta but everything needs rebuilt its in pieces lol
Doooo it! It is a TD motor. Kind of stock? Head studs etc
Little help here. so i have a 1.6td pump that i recently putted on my 1.9tdi engine. Before doing so, i swapped off the 10mm plunger from the 1.9tdi pump and place it on the 1.6td pump.
I adjusted the boost pin about 90degrees. For some reeason, i cant get it throw a little smoke, becaz the rev screw is backed all the way out. So i cant even adjust the fuel screw anymore. Anything as what might have caused it to still be throttling high even with the rev screw backed out?
The fuel/power screw is a essentially a multiplier of your throttle position. So let's say you bottom out your idle setting and it's providing 2 units of fuel, then if your fuel screw turned in (well say that's a 3x multiplier) then you're still getting 6 units of fuel not 2. Make sense at all?? Bottom line you can't run that much fuel screw with those settings - you could try playing with the way the throttle is indexed to the pump.
@@OliverFetter is there anyway I could reach you on fb to get a little more assistance if possible?
You can try to dm me I'm not sure that it will be any easier though?
Im looking to put a 1.6 tdi on a Baja bug. Whats your engine size, hp and torque?
That would be sweet! 1.6L, ~80 horse 115 trq
What is the stock boost
I think more like 10-15 ps. Tbh I have never had the stock turbo/settings so I'm not positive 🥲
I have an 84 1.6 4 speed naturally aspirated and it will startup then die but if I give it some pedal it stays alive after a few seconds then will idle fine but if I try to takeoff it will stall no matter what amount of pedal I give it any ideas?
Sounds like its pulling air in the fuel line from somewhere
I'd start with bleeding the fuel system at the injectors! Diesels only need fuel + compression to run.
How can i eliminate rev hang without closing the diesel ? I have a 1995 vento 1.9td aaz with a mk2 diesel pump and Garrett T3 turbo off a mk2
That sounds cool!! What do you mean by closing the diesel?
@@OliverFetter turning the fiew screw anti clockwise so it gets less fuel and eliminating rev hang
@@gianlucamizzi1187 yes! That's all you can do really 💁 tho my skitz tune on the gold pump did both heavy fueling & no hang but essentially linked the fuel screw directly to the throttle. 11mm still feels way better though.
This pump looks like the bosch ve pump that came on 89-93 5.9 cummins. Are they basically the same type of pump?
Just about the same thing yes! All mechanical with a diaphram/pin to account for boost pressure
@@OliverFetter OK that's perfect cuz I know how to tune a VE pump and that's not hard
Yes.
A ve pump does look like a ve pump
That is a fact
What injection pump is that ??
1.6TD pump rebuilt by Guiles
That thing is MINT
Diesels don’t come with 4sp only
Anything specific to keep egts down? Ceramic pistons, methanol, nitrous?
Working on that currently.. the intercooler is not quite cutting it anymore. I'm going to add propane to the mix and see what that does, if EGT's are still through the roof then probably going to add a big FMIC or meth injection or both! :D
@@OliverFetter what if you run more psi? Basically lean out the air fuel mixture. Bigger exhaust pipes?
@@dieselgeezer18 Good thought! I can't at the moment with the turbo I am running, it is maxed out (i.e. wastegate remains closed)
@@OliverFetter Hey man, what turbo did you use here?
@@wisdomofafoton GT17 in this vid. The '17 is actually just a touch small for this motor - it spools fast which is great but develops boost creep at high RPM's
Hey men do you know if i can put some kind of hard cut "popcorn" rev limiter on a engine like this with mechanical fuel pump?
Not on a mechanical pump no but I have seen some people from Portugal make mechanical diesels have some kind of Rev limiter, guessing they have some kind of controller on the fuel shut off solenoid that shuts the fuel on and off quickly like a Rev limiter
Probably not ~ unless you rigged up a raspberry pi & rpm sensor to cut fuel delivery at a certain rpm intermittently... But that still probably wouldn't sound like 🍿 cheers!
@@OliverFetter ok one more question ca you make somthing like the "evry" or "every" mod on a mechanical pump like the people do to thier tdi's
@@vankata252 No sir that's just an electronic pump ability.
Strangely there are tons of 🐇 s in the pacific nw
Solid problem to have 💯💯💯
Hey where are you located?
Denver Colorado
If you drive slow hows the fuel economy?
Still unreasonably good lol it is still a small 4 cyl diesel
Where did you get your clutch?
I seriously don't remember but it was a southbend brand pressure plate
Okay ,I’ve had trouble finding durable plates in 210mm. Well not in that size but the boreaxle is smaller than what most sintered plates use
Update: the south bend ripped in half while trying to drag race 🙈 currently using an oem 210mm with better results

Actually idle screw his the one standing up beyind your pump. Your just playing with your governor this way. Just sawing..
Not sure what you mean. Certainly the idle screw is what controls the throttle lever position... And is on the back of the pump.
30psi head gasket and engine will not last
Stay tuned sir... Currently tearing down the motor 🫣
