  • MEEDEN sent me this rather lovely-looking watercolour set to try out. This set is aimed with beginners in mind and so the products are student-level quality. MEEDEN has said to me they wanted to produce a set which is of decent quality for a reasonable price, and today I'm going to find out if this set is any good! I've had less than positive experiences with beginner products before, but this particular set really seems to be a lot nicer and I'm going to give it a solid investigation and review today!
    Check out Meeden's website and products from the links below (with affiliate links included).
    There is free shipping to a number of countries, including Australia - woohoo!

    I feel like i am the only art reviewer who disliked this set. I liked the paper quite a bit tho. Its nice to have lots of teviews on a product tho for the customers. Have a great weekend! I enjoyed your video!

      I haven't watched any other reviews on this set yet so I wouldn't bias my own ideas. I found the biggest challenge was to try and look at it from a "Beginner's perspective" and not think about all of the professional supplies I use on a daily basis, lol. It was surprisingly difficult to do! I think I'd have been happy starting out with these, except maybe for the brown paints which were the weakest of the lot. I shall be watching your review now! ❤

      Didn’t someone confirm that Meeden 100% cotton paper is same as Baohong? Or did I imagine that?

    I have that large Meeden tin, took the flappy thing off and have my DS paints in it too! And no, I didn't copy you, so I feel like we're sisters of the universe or something, ha. That ceramic divided brush cleaner looks awesome. The paints might be a tad better than some of the other cheap student grade. You did nice work with them! Thanks for the review.

      I think a lot of artists end up removing the flappy bit; it's such a pain, especially on the bigger tins! I have quite a collection of those now, lol.

    I think i want those brushes for gouache. They look nice. Would love to try that paper as well. Shame they dont make a sketchbook. You should suggest it. Theyd make a killing with cotton paper. ❤

      That's a very good idea, a cotton sketchbook! The brushes would be great for gouache and they should be in their store as a single item. 🙂

    I have my first student watercolor set coming. I got a Cotman 24 set for only about $40 on Amazon a few weeks ago, which I know was a very good sale price. As a non watercolour artist, who has absolutely no idea what I'm doing, these should be more than enough for me 😂 I actually do want a decent brush set as most of what I have, say watercolour and just aren't. That's one issue I have with sites like Amazon, every ad says something does watercolour to oil paint (doubtful) and they always say professional too (not true either). Everytime I've tried watercolour (I do have a Reeves set), having the wrong brushes means I'm not able to do what I should be able to with watercolours.
    You're new colours are lovely and I love how dark the black is.
    I have some of their paper. But it doesn't say Meeden, but has Chinese writing. But the Amazon ad says Meeden, so I think it's their no Anglo versions.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  11 месяцев назад

      I started out with a small Cotman set too. 😊 If you look up Sable Watercolour Brushes on Amazon, there is a set of I think 9 brushes by Golden Maple; I bought some a while ago and they have been great! Decent price too, as long as you don't mind natural hair brushes. And now I hope they'll actually be good, if you end up getting some, lol!

      @lozantoninocreations 11 месяцев назад

      @@BeckyTregear I actually have the Golden Maple brushes. I got them last year. But I wasn't sure if they were actually decent or not. They don't hold their shape well when they are wet. I have only really tried them with gouache so far I think and I also don't really know what makes a good watercolour brush. I see sets with mop brushes and cats tongues and I will admit to not know what those things are for.

      I mean, W&N produce their stuff in China (cheaper costs). And Amazon takes a pretty big share on the stuff thats being sold on their platform (20-40%). So you probably still overpaid for these paints. Not sure if they really are worth the price that's being charged, since their production costs are probably much lower now that they produce that stuff in China.

    Love the Meeden porcelain palettes. I have a similar porcelain water container, which is from Japan. I prefer brushes without added colour on the tips, so I would skip these. Paper seems great. Lindsay the frugal crafter reviewed the paints 👎 and the paper 👍 thoroughly . I will skip the paints. It is always intersting different artists use same supplies in dofferent wqys, though. Thanks so much for this review.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  11 месяцев назад +1

      Ah yes, the paints really are aimed at beginners but the paper was really good especially when compared to other beginner sets out there that have icky cellulose paper.

    • @Oozaru85
      @Oozaru85 10 месяцев назад

      Kind of rude to come to an artists channel and tell them ur not gonna listen to their positive review of the paints but instead to the negative review of another artist. If her opinion doesn't matter to you getting these paints and you decided to listen to Lindsey only, then why are you even watching her video? Just to tell her that you trust Lindsey's opinion more? Yeah, kinda rude, imo.

    I prefer the meeden paper to the bouahong. I used my Schminke watercolours on it though, the saturation is awesome, much more than most other cotton papers I’ve tried.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  11 месяцев назад +1

      I'll agree with you on the saturation levels! I liked it the most for doing the galaxy painting which had lots of water and the paper held up really well!

    • @phillipstroll7385
      @phillipstroll7385 11 месяцев назад +1

      I must disagree. Schmincke is my least go to paint because they aren't saturated and vibrant. I find them to be extremely flat. Sennelier likewise. I do like them for layering. When I have a year to work on a painting and apply multiple layers then I find those paints good for that.

  • @Oozaru85
    @Oozaru85 10 месяцев назад

    I'm probably the only person in this world who actually likes using cellulose paper with watercolors, lol. Not all brands tho. I use one of the cheapest brands I could find on Amazon. But I love using it for wet on dry illustrations, especially since it has a very nice and unique texture to it. The texture actually almost looks like the cold pressed cotton paper by Baohong. Gives my pictures a very nice, textured look. Lifting paints also works much better on it than on the Baohong Academy series for example. So another big plus for me, since I use lifting a lot.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  10 месяцев назад

      It's totally fine to like cellulose paper! 😆 Actually you're right in that it has its own particular qualities which can be beneficial to certain types of painting and illustration. I think whatever paper makes you happy is the right paper to be using. ❤
