6 SPD 23' Golf R 20th here. Got it 7/11/23. I've had a MK4 GTI VR6, Mk6 GTI, Mk7 GTI and now my MK8 R and I absolutely LOVE this car. Never had anything major go wrong on any of my VW's. I put a new radiator and a wheel bearing on the mk4 but that was around 100k miles and i beat that car up. I have about 12.5k miles on the R which is my daily. So the 1 issue I had was after the break in point about, about 1,100 miles in (I hadn't even done a hard pull in it yet) and my check engine light came on 🫨 What freaked me out was that the MK6 Gti had the Unitronic stage 2 tune from the dealer complete with 3'' down pipe and Erotune exhaust. That car was a beast. Anyway around the same mileage my check engine light came on and turns out the MK6 somehow went through 3 qts of oil. Probably the tune. The dealer said it was normal consumption for a brand new GTI and somehow it was within their parameters and everything was OK. No damage to the engine. I kept the car for about 4 years put over 50k miles on it no problems. Actually I felt the clutch start slipping around 4.5k miles so I ended up putting a more aggressive pad and that fixed the issue. Same clutch more aggressive pad. No problems. Anyway back to the R.... 1,150 miles in, check engine comes on I'm freaking out cause the car is stock other then tints, ppf, ceramic coating I've done nothing to this car. I Pulled over immediately, popped the hood, checked the oil... it's good. Now I'm really freaking out cause now I have no idea what's wrong with my car. Took it to the dealer, and it turns out the actuator in the intake manifold control valve was stuck closed. Apparently it's not uncommon with VW, Audi's, Porsche's, and the rest of the fleet. The way they explained it was that it had something to do with the sea and moisture when the cars are shipped to the states in the shipping containers. I looked into it and turns out its not a VW issue more of a parts manufacturer issue. So other car manufacturers have this issue with this part. It was covered under warranty so nothing outta pocket. Sometimes I have the issue with the back up camera too I know there's a recall for that so that should square that away. Other then that no problems thank God. I plan on getting the Unitronic 1+ tune with the upgraded intercooler and Intake which means I'd probably have to upgrade the clutch. I know I'd like to change the exhaust but I can't make up my mind on which one yet. I know i want black exhaust tips 😂 Unfortunately we can't get the Akrapovic in the states or I would've been happy with that. My 1 complaint is that my car stands out since it's a White 20th anniversary cause of the mirror's. I've yet to see another. And everyone that knows me knows where I'm at cause they know my car 😂 Oh another thing that sucks is that for some reason the 20th has blue caped mirrors that have puddle lights illuminating 20 R on the ground which looks dope and all but they dont fold so you have to fold them manually. Which is a tad bit annoying. I live in PA so my car has seen snow. I'm running Continental Extreme Contact DWS and this thing is a tank. I gotta keep reminding myself it's a hatchback and not an SUV. I don't wanna damage the lip. I love this car. I'm driving it till the wheels fall off. All my VW's have been 6spds by the way. Oh and if I'm not mistaken I believe the error code is P2006. Something to do with an actuator getting stuck closed. I'm sorry I Didn't mean for this comment to be so long but I love VW's and like I said I love this car. Love your content dude. Keep up the good work 😎
Thanks a lot brother I genuinely enjoyed your comment, you are a true car guy and a true VW guy too because those VR6 GTI's were super rare! Besides the DSG MK8R (stock), I also have an MK6 GTi stage 2 IE, coilovers, all braces bumper to bumper. The issue with oil consumption is due to the piston rings design. As soon as I bought it w 110k, I rebuilt the engine and installed the revised piston rings, balance shafts, upgraded timing covers, upgraded rear main seal, cleaned injectors, cam bridge, oil and water pump and new DSG flywheel, DSG fluid changes. Now that the cylinder head was out did a full port and polish. It is one hella go-kart, far from smooth, it is a raw drive all the way to redline. I have always changed the oil every 3k and the filter every other, full synthetic 10-40w, does not burn a drop of oil.

New technology is awesome when it works. The thing is the more tech they include the more chances for things to break or not work. I have a 2020 STI and think it has the best combo of new tech with old school and physical buttons. Haven’t had one electrical issue (or mechanical). To turn off TC is the touch of a designated button. Heated seats same. Drive modes are the twist of knob in the middle and can change without looking. Analog gages are iconic for me but digital is cool. And having physical volume and ac knobs make life easier. All I need to be happy is apple car play and the rest I can deal without. I have a ‘we Golf R, here are a few solutions to the issues you noted… 1. There is an “over air” software update for the car that may help with the radio issue. If not holding the power button on the radio for 15s performs a hard restart which can often reset it. 2. Car needs 91 min. can’t use 87. Keep an eye on it and I recommend filing a complaint with the dealer so they have record of the issue. They were in the wrong to put 87. 3. VW has always been known for poor bolster wear. 4. There is a recall for an update to the rear view camera. Needs to be done at dealer but this is something VW is aware of. 5. The RVC is designed to stay open until you start driving away. If it doesn’t go done in time you can cancel the command as you showed. 6. MK8 Golf R was honestly made to be a DSG car so the manual is a bit of an afterthought. I have the manual as well and enjoy it and the short gearing makes it feel more engaging b/c you have to shift more often, but that’s just me. 7. There is a fix for mode select but you need the VCDS cable/software to rewrite for of the adaptations.
I cross-shopped the Mk8 GTI, Mk8 R, and Elantra N I was enamored by just how handsome the Mk8 is, but I saw so many posts on Reddit and Facebook groups about electronic and electrical issues. I rarely see anything like it in any of the N forums. I am happy with my choice. My N has been perfect thus far.
I Have a 2024 golf R as well. Some tips The system update is available to fix bugs/issues came out in like August had mine done in 30mins when i went in for the oil change they notified me of it. I have had zero issues since, as for the audio have u adjust audio settings? you can also choose where you want audio to resonate more from in options. As for the seats because its leather and in a "bucket" shaped the angle of the bucket cushion is sensitive when i get in and out i try not to lean weight on it as i go in and out. I have also put a seat cushion on the seat which has prevented any damage i have a tiny crease after 10 months of use. Also i would be extremely pissed at a dealer for putting in 87... its why i rather them leave it empty on pickup ill fill it myself i usually put 93/94 but if iam at a gas station without that option then ill use 91 (min required). I have never had a issue with the backup camera though, in 10months ive never had it freeze like u were explaining but the update would probably resolve that.
Damn my bro, Im so sorry to hear your having all these issues, only thing i can agree on is gear ratios & the hitting “X” for the Rear camera thing, I find it really annoying, but after reading all these comments i hope we both have a Recall that will fix the camera issue. Ive had mine since July, also manual, only issue I had was that the dealer, left the shipping pucks in the suspension.. 🤦🏽♂️ Car rode like they cut the springs I knew there was something wrong. But hope you resolve all the problems ur having, this car has been amazing to daily, other then other small issues.
Aww man that sucks about the shipping pucks, did you get a chance to see what they looked like? I checked mine to make sure but I wasn't sure if I missed something.
Nice Type R. I've had my 2024 GTI S model for going on two months and have had no issues. I've seen that seat crease in other vids and in another part of the lower cushion. Just take it to the dealership for your backup camera. Might be software issues. 😎
I’m surprised to see this many small issues with this car. I believe the Mk8 has been out for 3 years now, and they are still having some of those issues, hopefully some software updates will fix most of the issues!
Damn that sucks. There were no issues with my 22 Golf R. There's a recall for the backup camera, you gotta go have it replaced if yours is effected. And yeah the car defaults to comfort mode on startup
I have a 23' 20th Anniversary R, it defaults to Sport mode. I got a couple of recalls done or inspected in my service visit, and they upgraded the infotainment software version to 1969. And my digital dash has held my settings since day 1. Weird yours does not. Also, the bass in this system, is not bad, at all. I modify the eq settings, and like listening to electronic music, and no doubt the bass hits. Funny to hear otherwise.
@@shaglioni Sorry, I meant sport mode. But you can have the car coded to stay in any mode you want and upgrade the harmon kardon system through acm technik. I did the harmon kardon upgrade along with the fender sub swap for a better audio experience

Dang brother sorry about your issues with the new Golf R . It really is a sexy car though and hope all the bugs get worked out for you. At least you still have your FL5 and I’m still loving mine even more everyday. I had a 2012 Gti I believe lol it’s been a while but it was pretty good no issues except for a recall they had to replace the steering box and brought it in and they replaced it but didn’t align the front end lol and felt it pulling hard and let go of the wheel and almost went into oncoming traffic 😳 Took it back to the dealer and they said the technician tried doing an old school alignment by eye lol WTF . Anyway other then that it was a good car and sold it with no issues when it had around 35,000 miles . But that was when they had a lot less electronics .
Alignment by eye oof! And no worries most of the issues have been fixed with the Golf R so I'm happy with it, plus like you said we both have amazing Type R's so overall life is good lol.
The Golf R has shorter wearing compared to the GTI because it's meant to be more aggressive. IDK about the FL5 but a lot of sports cars are intentionall geared shorter to be more fun an engaging. I think the GR Corolla also has pretty short gearing. Some ppl intentionally mod their cars to have even shorter gearing.
I feel bad for people who have issues with the Golf R cause it’s never major major issues but they are so annoying to experience daily. I haven’t had any issues with mine and it’s honestly the best car I could’ve ever bought
Im so glad I only know Non Back up camera cars....I don't ever want to get used to using the camera when reversing. Buy the way I know that you know how to go without the camera since you're a veteran car enthusiasts. Im hearing that kids only know the camera and cant go without.
I have a Mk8-R no issues that you you have showed except for the seat thing. Modes are not remembered its silly but dash view atays in R thats pretty annoying but the mk8.5r might adress these and bunch more. Especially with the preconditioned turbo. Ect the harmon kardon with 6in sub is probably a deal breaking for most. The fender sub mod seems to change peoples feelings. I am seriously thinking about trading up to the 8.5 black edition. Even though it looses manual it will have eco mode. Fatser 0 to 60 more hp and torque with some saying turbo spool is on at 2100 rather than later than 3000. Im excited for it and the manual in these cars isnt the greatest. The throws dont give you much confidence and ive owned over 30 manual cars. 😅 sad but i am willing to ditch the mnaual for a auto on the 25 black edition
My 24 R screen freezes everyday. The Apple CarPlay connects and disconnects daily. Worst infotainment system in a car. I love my car but the infotainment system needs real updates.
I turned in both my Golfs 1st 2018 Golf GTI Autobahn 2nd 2019 Golf SE in 2019. I was going to lease the R when at the dealer but saw how the interior looked in person and said NO WAY! Than they where asking 10k markup as well .That really turned me away. I think the 2025 has caught my attention .
I'm with you on that . But 2 OUT OF 10 don't satisfied VW . I'm just hoping VW just builds them like before 2020 MK7 7.5 etc. I just might come back and buy an R
Crazy that you have 2 'competitors'. In reality, they are very different. I have a 7.5 R DSG Lapiz. It's my daily. I would love a Type R. I live in SoCal and traffic is bad more than half the time which is why I got a DSG. I'm tempted to trade mine in for a 8.5 R DSG. The rebel in me would get a used CRV and trade my current Golf R for a Type R.
Closer ratio gearbox on more track focused models. I remember I had a 2010 WRX which hit 60 in 2nd and did 4.7sec 0-60 whereas the sti that same year took two shifts to 60 and was a half second slower almost even with 40 more hp. Needless to say Subaru sold a lot more Wrx’s in 09/10 since the fanboys are looking at stats like 0-60 and think they’re saving 10k with Wrx over sti.
To be able to hit 60 in second gear the gears would have to be very long which wouldn't be good for performance... But maybe you like longer gears like an old Acura NSX. Ive never ben able to hit 60 in any old Honda I own I always had to grab 3rd .
@@RaceCarFriends People dont understand the mk8/mk8.5 is the last generation of petro golfs as they going to full electric so we hold the last year model of the car it will retain value possibly gain value as a majority of the automakers are going hybrid or electric its literally the last manual golf generation and last petro run engine they will be making which will make it historic since its the "last" in 20-30 years their will be some young men that want to be able to tune/mod these cars instead of buying electric cars that you cant do anything to, no personalization and they will be paying a premium no diff then people buying a rx7/supra thats 20 years old for 50k-100k+ depends on condition/mileage.
Dealer was the issue with the gas. The car did exactly what it was supposed to do. All leather will crease. The rear camera has stayed open since the mk7. There's a recall on the infotainment freezing. VW doing VW things. They've always had electrical gremlins.

I was enamored by just how handsome the Mk8 is, but I saw so many posts on Reddit and Facebook groups about electronic and electrical issues. I rarely see anything like it in any of the N forums. I am happy with my choice. My N has been perfect thus far.
Yup the Elantra N is an amazing car for the money I kept trying to find them locally but the dealerships never had them.
Thanks for the advice I'm going to try to adjust how I sit and get out of the car to limit the amount of wrinkle added to the seats.
Thanks I appreciate it and yup I think you're right.
@@RaceCarFriends Yw. Oh and you might think about getting some seat covers if you're OCD like I am with details. Lol. I subbed. 😎
@@davidjames4583 Bet thanks I'm definitely going to look into seat covers, welcome to the RCF family.
I’m surprised to see this many small issues with this car. I believe the Mk8 has been out for 3 years now, and they are still having some of those issues, hopefully some software updates will fix most of the issues!
Yeah man it's pretty disappointing TBH.
Damn that sucks. There were no issues with my 22 Golf R. There's a recall for the backup camera, you gotta go have it replaced if yours is effected. And yeah the car defaults to comfort mode on startup
Awesome thanks for the info that really helps to know, glad to know that you haven't had any issues with your Golf R.
@@rtep27 How about creases in your seat in the leather! How is it holding up in comparison to his seats?
I have a 23' 20th Anniversary R, it defaults to Sport mode. I got a couple of recalls done or inspected in my service visit, and they upgraded the infotainment software version to 1969. And my digital dash has held my settings since day 1. Weird yours does not. Also, the bass in this system, is not bad, at all. I modify the eq settings, and like listening to electronic music, and no doubt the bass hits. Funny to hear otherwise.
@@shaglioni Nice I really wanted a 23 model year that's the best looking one in my opinion.
@@shaglioni Sorry, I meant sport mode. But you can have the car coded to stay in any mode you want and upgrade the harmon kardon system through acm technik. I did the harmon kardon upgrade along with the fender sub swap for a better audio experience
man it's time to go Audi... hehehe You already in RS3 territory and the RS3 is a BEAST super underrated.
Also good resale!
@@WillMotivation Lol facts but no manual gearbox, that's the one thing keeping me from going Audi RS3.
I'd consider it if the RS3 came in a hatchback and with 3 pedals.
@@du3lcitiz3n Facts same here, that would be an amazing car with 3 pedals and in hatchback form!
@@WillMotivation DCT shift sounds are pretty sweet and the paddles work really well and launch control is nasty, but I get that he's a man that prefers to row his own gears!😀😄
Dang brother sorry about your issues with the new Golf R . It really is a sexy car though and hope all the bugs get worked out for you. At least you still have your FL5 and I’m still loving mine even more everyday. I had a 2012 Gti I believe lol it’s been a while but it was pretty good no issues except for a recall they had to replace the steering box and brought it in and they replaced it but didn’t align the front end lol and felt it pulling hard and let go of the wheel and almost went into oncoming traffic 😳
Took it back to the dealer and they said the technician tried doing an old school alignment by eye lol WTF .
Yup it's true, for me I prefer longer gearing for cars that I plan on making fast, it helps with roll racing.
My mk7.5 never did that with the rear camera. I have heard that the mk8 has lots of complaints about the touch screen buttons .
Yup my 7.5 never had any of these issues, just the grab handle thing and that was it.
That frozen screen is a violation of FMVSS111. I’m shocked they let that into production
😳
Most likely a communication problem between modules.
@@twobeagles1365 Sounds about right.
Man is VW one of the brands you deal with?
@@RaceCarFriendsthere’s a recall for the reverse screen glitching out, they can update the firmware
I had an issue with my reverse camera too
Aww man for real? Do you miss your Golf R at all? 👀
@@RaceCarFriends I loved the car but it didn’t feel that special for the price. Felt numb. Was super comfortable though
@@Gonin60 Yeah I know what you mean, are you happy with what you have now? It's getting harder and harder to find modern cars with that fun feeling.
@@RaceCarFriends love my s2000! I’m
Currently trying to find my next car. I hear ya
@@Gonin60 Yup the S2000 is an amazing vehicle, I honestly feel like the most fun newer car available is the Type R, have you driven one yet?
I feel bad for people who have issues with the Golf R cause it’s never major major issues but they are so annoying to experience daily. I haven’t had any issues with mine and it’s honestly the best car I could’ve ever bought
I feel you and agree I love my Golf R.
Im so glad I only know Non Back up camera cars....I don't ever want to get used to using the camera when reversing. Buy the way I know that you know how to go without the camera since you're a veteran car enthusiasts. Im hearing that kids only know the camera and cant go without.
Lol yup that's what saved me I still use all of my mirrors all the time.
I know countless owners of mk7/mk8 golf r. Apart from water pumps minimal issues and can handle power. Some have 200+ miles
Yup overall I love my Golf R and plan on keeping it.
I've over heard for the tweaks like for it to save ur previous settings when u turn off the car if you get an obd11 I believe you can code it
Yeah I've heard the same thing I'm going to look into it.
Aww man don't do it! Stay loyal to Team Manual! Lol
My 24 R screen freezes everyday. The Apple CarPlay connects and disconnects daily. Worst infotainment system in a car. I love my car but the infotainment system needs real updates.
Man that's annoying I hope they have an update that fixes all of these issues.
To fix the issue you have to disable factory gps sadly. Just use apple car plays gps. There are videos that shows how to do it
I turned in both my Golfs 1st 2018 Golf GTI Autobahn 2nd 2019 Golf SE in 2019. I was going to lease the R when at the dealer but saw how the interior looked in person and said NO WAY! Than they where asking 10k markup as well .That really turned me away. I think the 2025 has caught my attention .
The 25's should be very interesting just sucks for people like me that want a manual gearbox variant.
I'm with you on that . But 2 OUT OF 10 don't satisfied VW . I'm just hoping VW just builds them like before 2020 MK7 7.5 etc. I just might come back and buy an R
@@rgonzalez6735 Facts I hope so too.
Listen to the rebel in you and do it, you'll be happy that you did 😎
Golf R is really nice but for $45K-$50K, it better be flawless.
I agree with you.
You're under warranty. Take it in and get a new backup camera. Had to get one on my 22 GTI.
Very true, I might do just that.
In type r disabling factory gps fixes infotainment issues. Just use apple car play gps
Yup you're right.
Lol yup those 0 to 60 times are really important to most people lol.
For how expensive these cars are I would be extremely pissed off.
Lol I was really depressed about it for a while.
Ugh. Sorry dude. Maybe time to consider a new sti...
If a new STI comes out I'm going to be all over it!
To be able to hit 60 in second gear the gears would have to be very long which wouldn't be good for performance... But maybe you like longer gears like an old Acura NSX. Ive never ben able to hit 60 in any old Honda I own I always had to grab 3rd .
Yeah the new Type R's hit 60 in 2nd gear.
Bluey late but on time

LMAO! Nah I'm keeping this Golf R for a long time ( God's Willing )
@@DynamicAttraction Yup I agree with this big time, I'm actually making a video about this very subject!
Dealer was the issue with the gas. The car did exactly what it was supposed to do. All leather will crease. The rear camera has stayed open since the mk7. There's a recall on the infotainment freezing. VW doing VW things. They've always had electrical gremlins.

Reason why smart buyers by new things last. 😅 The first problem was really no problem. The second was no problem either. You use minimum 95 octane or higher. Not 93 😅

I originally from the UK, now living in Canada. My dad in the 80s and 90s was a foreman for VAG group. Back then VW were solid. Thanks for sharing brother.
