This is great man. I always end up not using the LA2A on tracks because although the attack is good, the release is just too slow. This plugin just fixes that and adds an option for saturation as a bonus.
Never disappointed with UVI. These guys just make quality stuff. I know they tend to focus more on sound ware, but they really need to keep on with their effects line. They don't give you a 1:1 emulation... they add useful, modern features that make them unique.
I absolutely love UVI. I got rid of all of my subs and only have UVI sonicpass. And thanks for clearing up the 7 models. I didn’t realize that they were 7 different LA-2A’s. Pretty cool.
It's unique pieces, it's gonna be hard to find out. I'm actually helping them connecting with a studio here to model Les Paul's own 2A the black one with the DI input on the front (I have a video on it on the channel)
I don’t need another Opto compressor plugin, but this was a fun ear training exercise for all the different flavors of LA-2A you can find out there. Thanks as always 🙏🏼
Thanks for TOP content and in-depth look. May i ask which microphone / preamp / comp / eq you used on Bella's beautiful voice while tracking? Thanks a lot for your dedication!
You're welcome! Her usual chain is OC818 into API 512c into SSL EQ (for cuts) into either distressor (8 times out of 10) or Wes Rhea. Mixing is usually 670 and Empress EQ. This particular take was done with a Hammer HA-69 into 1073 (original) into Distressor
Was just waiting for this video. Being a huge fan of optical compressors, I couldn't wait to download the plugin when the release was announced. Needless to say it didn't disappoint. It's one of the few plugins in my favourites folder now. The responsiveness makes it also extremely useful for a smooth sidechaining of the bass to the kick drum.
I’ve never even heard of this company until now. I’m gonna demo this plugin to see how it stacks up to my Golden Age Project Ga2a and UAD LA2A and CLA2A and Neold UA2 and IKMultimedia’s version of the LA2A and Analog Obsession’s LaLa
Really? UVI is a behemoth, besides Falcon (movie industry standard for sound design) they have Relayer, Drum Replacer, Spark, Plate and the new Delay X that are insane plugins
Anyone downloaded the trial version? I'm trying but after giving them an email it says that trial link has been sent and nothing is in the email. Checked all folders including spam. Tried 2 different email addresses. I would like to demo it before buying. Thanks😊
hmmm its okay, trackcomp has a more metallic annoying high end, i find Neold U2A with 4x oversample to be the closest thing to a real la-2a in the plugin world
The Compressor is pretty cool but those vocals sound amazing (recording and performance wise)! What Mic did you record them with? The compression brings up so much fine detail and space around the voice, it really (not just kind of) sounds like she is standing between my speakers. Also I can't wait to hear the full song, the melody is quite catchy even as an acappella.
Thank you, I recorded Bella with a Hammer Audio HA-69 tube into a vintage 1073 into a Distressor. I know quite a chain, we did this at Paramount Records. Unfortunately there's a high chance that this song will never see the light of day even tho' it's done and ready because we made the mistake of collaborating with totally unprofessional people for this track.
@@mixbustv sad to hear that, hearing it had me exited for a moment. Other then that, thank you for disclosing your recording chain, it made me understand better what I can expect from such high quality gear and what I am often missing from recordings made on cheaper Mics and Interface Preamps. Never heard of that Mic before but I'll check it out. Have been eyeballing Telefunken TF Mics for an upgrade until now, as I had recordings in the past from those and they reacted very good to EQ and compression.
Oh wow, now my favorite opto-comp mode from HorNet multicomp+ mk2 have a super versatile competitor (versatility is a thing you always find in UVI products). Actually, the only plugin i miss from UVI, always getting whatever they release. Thank you David for introducing me into the UVI world years ago with Falcon at Patreon (my default synth since then). I'm sure they'll make a FET compressor next, can't imagine how awesome it is going to be. 💥💥💥
"When UVI comes into the room, you listen". I also hold UVI in high regard. Thanks, for a useful and informative video, as always. I'll try it. Just got myself another UVI gem; the Sweep machine. It is fantastic, and kind of a hidden gem in the UVI catalog. BTW, in the beginning of the video, on Bellas voice, the delay/reverb is absolutely stunning - please tell us how you did that. And of course, Bellas voice is too.
Well thank you. That take has a pretty crazy chain, Hammer HA-69 mic into original 1073 into distressor (we tracked at Paramount) so between her voice, performance and chain that's a good start :D in fact the rest is as simple as it gets: echoboy in "analog chorus" mode with both low and high cuts at 2 'o clock. 1/8 left 1/4 right, and ready??.. D-verb Hall large both cuts at 15/16K with a big low shelf cutting about 8-10db from 300Hz and down.
this is by far better than waves la2a or t-racks for example, UAD maybe has a nice sound, though this thing is million times more versatile! also the drive sounds amazing! this thing makes any source better in seconds, very impressive!
I might be looking like a fool, but im genuinely looking for help to understand something a bit better: if the responsiveness of a LA-2A isnt your taste, why not going with something that you like more right off the bat? And how much LA-2A is still there, if you change it in the compression aspect? It sounds dumb, maybe, but i just hope for an answer that is easier to understand that way.
There are no dumb questions first of all! You are correct, purists will do exactly that, will go for another compressor yet, there are different versions of the 2A in the analog world, even tho' there's basically a couple that are the most common. With that said, you DO have the "one" here original and classic just as a purist would want, these are simply different options which are indeed useful because the 2A is a quite limited compressor by nature (so are others) and you can definitely keep the - in my opinion main character - "squeeze" of the 2A even if you change attack and release or overall timing.
can you make a video about make up gain cause when i gain up to the same i cant hear a difference only difference i can hear if the gain reducation is applied
sounds awesome, but no autogain! Surely this should be the standard now? If you were using the real thing you'd use two hands. This can't be dome with a mouse, so it should come with autogain! Cant belive there's no option for that?!
@@mixbustv I think very exciting would be one of the cheapest replicas on the market: Klark Teknik or something more expensive like Lin Audio or Warm Audio? And software comparison to uaudio?
Not sure if it's really woth their time RN, maybe a bit too late imo, as its gonna be really challenging to beat the Pulsar one with 4x or 8x oversampling engaged, wich has been praised by basically every single RUclipsr that reviewed this gem so far
Thanks for the video - big UVI fan and was hoping this would not be 'just another LA2A'. My problem is with your voice pickup. Sounds phasy. I know you've used lav mics in your videos before and they've been clear but not this one.

I've always been unhappy with 2a plugins, this looks very very promising! Thank you Dave
Same here! Except UAD, it sounds classy
UVI is class act man, love this one it sounds really good

So much better than the regular 2As!
At 11:20 you explain nicely the alternative to sharp attack, thanks

Probably the only LA2A plugin that I would use, love the different T4's
This thing is a beast. bella’s voice on the NYC classic was my favorite, bringing out all the raspyness was amazing.
You know!
As soon as Opal was released I got it, and I was very impressed with the features. This is fantastic! Gold Tool!

I just tried the Channev Neve style channel strip from Analog Obsession on kick drum. You have to try it if you haven't already. It's cheap too.
Have you tried this on the master buss? It sounds very usable and amazing
Nice, any idea how this compares to the DMG TrackComp 2A model, which also has some extra tweaks?

I compared this to a Teletronix original and found it to be closer than UAD, on the “Sharp” curve setting
Analog ones giving that color which no plugin can give, maybe in future AI can figurate it ;)
Wouldn't it be cool had they added an "air" function, who knows maybe in an update. Thanks for the demo.
Hey, have yo tried tomo audio labs lisa from plugin alliance? I think It can be very interesting
I haven't

Really great plugin.
Compressor is awesome but the tube saturation isnt doing enough even when I dial it at higher drive settings. Might be a bug.
Or you can push the input knob at the top 😄
Sounds amazing.

Wow really impressive
David, how is it compared to the LA3A?
Well the 3A is a solid state, is quite different. I'm a sucker for 3A's lol especially lately
I can hear some kick bleed just a tiny bit in this.
drive without overrsampling? im sceptical
I wonder if we put it there if you could hear with and without :D
Is it possible to do a software plugin vs. Hardware video for this one?
Possible yes, yet which model I'm comparing to?
