  • They say a real warrior should know their weapon like the back of their hands, but how well do our #LPL pros know theirs?

its interesting to me that some champions have their chinese versions of their names whereas some dont. Can someone give me a brief explanation on how that works? Alongside with some examples would be much appriciated

They are nicknames, often with some correlations to their attributes, and the more popular champions tend to have them. For example, Lee Sin is 李星, which is a direct auditory translation, but his nickname is Mang Zheng 盲僧, which means “blind monk”. Some other common examples are Tai Tan 泰坦 for Nautilus, which means “titan”, Xiao Pao 小砲 for Tristana meaning “little cannon”, and Wu Chi 武器 for Jax which just means “weapon”. Some of them are pretty creative, and most of them just stick over time, so there’s really nothing that works, it’s just a part of the community.

its just a balance between how easy the original name / champion title is to say and how catchy the nickname is. Like Lee Sin, The Blind Monk. Many called him blindy/blindfuck (瞎子), the derogatory term makes it funny so people often stick to it.

Koreans study chinese first before going to china. Just like Ruler, they need to learn basic communication such as need help, attack frontline/backline, flank.

In interviews they can speak korean or English but in games they need to learn Mandarin
