Air Lines Flight 123 not only had to deal with loss of control due to hydraulics being severed, but also rapid decompression loss & loss of the horizontal stabilizer. Rapid decompression loss has caused fatal crashes without any additional problems. Decompression loss is a whole another set of problems to deal with. The horizontal stabilizer (tail), is more critical to flight performance over a chunk of a wing missing. I find referencing JAL-123 to the attempted DHL shootdown laughable. Using United Airlines Flight 232 ceash as reference is reasonable though.
