  • This G-2800 rotator was sent to me for repair, it was only installed for about 2 years, upon testing it seemed to be working fine, BUT. Since I had two other G-2800's in for service recently, I decided to video this one as had a feeling I knew what the intermittent problem was. I removed the motor from the gear chassis, removed the BK pinion & BK Spring, to find the BK rotor (BK butterfly) was loose, sliding up & down the motor shaft. Not enough lock tight on the grub screw that holds it in position. If this was left any longer there could have been a lot more damage done.

I’ve bought two of those, and for what they cost I would expect more from a trusted brand.
Both are on the shelf, I get more longevity out of the RCA tv antenna rotator.

Most of the problems these rotators have, is cause by poor assembly &/or the under size 3mm grub screw used on the BK brake butterfly as mentioned in the video.

I’ll do mast inspection and maintenance soon so will replace the rotor. I have a new Hygain TX2 available (NOS Hygain, not MFJ) or can get a new G2800 rotor. Which of these two rotors do you feel is more robust/trouble free? Antenna is Mosley Pro 57B-40, new rotor controller will be Green Heron RT-21. Any suggestion on a different rotor? Any check/mod/fix I should do on the new TX2 BEFORE installation? I value your opinion a LOT. Thanks

Hi Jim thank you for the comment, these two rotators have a major difference in specs etc. The T2X has a Wind Area of 1.8mSq, where as the G-2800 has 3.0mSq, This is mainly because the G-2800 has 3 sets of final drive gears on to the housing where as the T2X only has one set. The Brake Torque is also way different T2X is 104kg/m, where as the G-2800 is 250kg/m. The Rotation Torque is also a lot different T2X is 11.7kg/m, where as the G-2800 has a range of 8.0 ~ 25Kg/m because it has a DC motor with speed control.
I have a selection of rotator comparison charts for a lot of makes & models of rotators, all written in the same layout & metric measurements for easy comparison.
Other brands of rotators Create RC5 series (worm gear drive) has wind area ratings of 1.2 - 2.5 & 3.0mSq, you can see more info on my web site.

I have a Yaesu G-450c that has just lost its 'brake' and the antenna moved position in the wind. I turned the antenna back to the beam position it was pointing 'by hand' before the winds. I could hear the gears turning freely inside with rotator with no un-towards noises, I guess the brake has failed as I should of not been able to turn the rotator by hand. Using the rotator controller all seems fine and the rotator turns and the controller needle position seems ok once it caught up to the position of the rotator after I manually turned the rotator. Thanks for your detailed informative video of the Yaesu G 2800 which has given me an understanding as to what could have possibly failed on my G-450c. Looking at the G-450c rotator exploded view diagram I can see the very same 'BK ButteryFly' in the GT-450c..... I wonder if the grub screw has backed right off allowing the shaft to turn fully or worse still the 'BK ButterFly' may have snapped. The last time I installed my hexbeam antenna on the rotator I did notice a little left to right slap but nothing to excessive :-(

Thanks for the comments on the video. Since you stated the rotator seems to still be turning OK via the controller, I would have a guess the BK butterfly grub screw has not totally back out & is still in contact with the motor's shaft, but the BK butterfly has dropped down missing one end of the BK spring There is a couple of other thing's that can cause the BK brake to not hold. (1) the BK spring ends have snapped off. (2) the BK drum is one of the cheap crap versions that the BK spring cuts/melt the drum. The only way to really find out what has happened, is to strip down rotator & while you have it apart check everything plus service it. PS I have noticed they don't use enough Lock Tight on the BK grub screw plus @ a guess has not been done up tight enough when it was assembled. Regards Peter H

@@duoro-rotators Hi Peter, thanks for your reply with further helpful information. Once the UK weather improves and warms up a bit I'll get the rotator off the mast and strip it down. Thanks for boosting my confidence, Cheers Paul

Hello ive some troubles with the 2800 yaesu. Can you explain how to correct re-assembly and full adjustment? I make the repair with the ‘butterfly’ , but now I think ive made some mistakes with the alignment between controller and rotator. Thanks in advance.

Hi IZ2MGN, Thank you for the enquiry.
However I can not explain how to properly align your rotator etc on any open media, as that is my job & how I make my living ie pay bills etc. If you want to get in contact with me via my web site (the link is in the description of the video) I could write up a alignment manual & sell you a (laminated) hard copy, sent to you via post only. Regards Peter

Very infomative clip. I have a G-2800 with a stripped plastic gear but wasn't able to find a internal parts list for ordering the part. Any ideas? Thanks.

Sorry I missed your comment, The No.1 gear in a G-2800 is a fibre gear not plastic, I have these gears in stock, if you still need this gear please get in contact with me via my web site, which is listed in the description of the video.

Hi Steven, There is a number of things that can cause that problem with your G450c. First in the controller :- Broken display drive belt, Cracked drive gear on the POT, Stuffed POT, One of the pins (1,2 or 3) in the output plug/socket has dislodged, Faulty wiring &/or joint in control cable wires 1, 2 or 3. The ROTATOR :- Stuffed POT, The screw that holds the small POT drive gear above the limit swing bar has come loose. I can give you testing procedure to help you check & eliminate some of the above problems, contact me via email on duoro2@bigpond.com .
