Hey everybody! Thanks for watching this video on "5 Albums to Expand Your Taste in Music". Lately I've gotten a lot of suggestions for more general, rapid-fire videos like this. There's a whooooooole world of weird subgenres within the greater, music landscape, and we're gonna try to preview a few of them. Please, for the love of everything, this video is not trying to go into crazy detail about the most authentic forms of these subgenres. This is simply meant to introduce people to this stuff that they might not know. Let me know what you think down below and thanks for watching!
Albums / Expand / Music / Taste / Tastes / Educational / Genres / Subgenres / Indie / Favorite / Intro / Math Rock / Experimental Hip Hop / Ambient Pop / Jazz Rock / Art Pop / Listen / Reaction / Tricot / Danny Brown / Air / Steely Dan / Moon Safari Видеоклипы
I love experimental hip hop but I don't know why I don't have any female friends?
"yeah I have a lot of female friends. So what if they are all crackheads?"
i've touched a female's hand once
Alberto ; aye me too
Once you go experimental Hip Hop you can never go back. It's absolutely demolished my chances at a normal life, when I here pop music now all I can think is "this would be so much better if it sounded like shit".
LMAO
People today: There’s no good music anymooooooore!
Me: Nah, you’re just lazy.
Greetings Beautiful soul (forgive me abit i know I am not exactly what you may have come here for ..) but my name is Ibn Orator...I am an Avant-Garde, introspective & Political Hip Hop Artist from New Haven CT. All the best
Ibn Orator
P.S. these times being hard is an understatement for alot of us ..so id like to say that i love you, if you haven't heard it from anyone and that things are about to change as they always do, for better or worse….#stayup!
that's so true
Exactly. I always say that to people. There's a lot of great music, but it's more hidden. Most mainstream music isn't that good
Exactly
To Pimp A Butterfly.
Some obscure indie recommendations you probably won’t know:
Coldplay- Yellow
MGMT- Kids
Imagine Dragons- Radioactive
Neutral Milk Hotel- In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Arctic Monkeys
Good one
Is neutral even indie anymore, they're pretty big, socially not genre-wise.
@@illford6921 hes being sarcastic, all of these are popular, well known artists.
😭 bruhhh
This is sarcasm right? Iuheoiwdfhoijefjefoiw
dude, hear me out, what if u made a spotify playlist for people looking to discover new music... or just any playlist, really. I trust your taste heavily.
I really need this man
Watch fantano, thats how I find out about most good stuff
@@captainafro2310 what? What is that supposed to mean? A critic being overrated? Are you talking about him being the busiest? Is there anyone else who reviews as much stuff? I like Shawn cee but he just does hiphop stuff. Not useful in the least. Whereas melon has introduced me to swans, daughters, mount eerie, fleet Foxes and a lot more
hey I trust Alfo as well but for a video like this you can get a similar list of albums from the top charts on rateyourmusic.com. If you want to find top albums in genres it is pretty good, or you can dig thru top of all time charts until you get to something you haven’t heard before and read the reviews/descriptors to find out more about it.
Don't listen to playlists, listen to albums
I’m kinda into some indie artists you’ve probably never heard of
-
Lists off Tyler, The Creator, Frank Ocean, Brockhamptom
Urgh. This hits home too hard.
tfw brockhamptom
Had bitch tell me she listens to mxmtoon and called her obscure never heard of here then looked her up and has over 3million monthly listeners
@@Thepharcyde04 he's obscure.
@@Thepharcyde04 or she* 3m isn't much
1: Math Rock: TRICOT's THE CGPP
2: Experimental Hip Hop: DANNY BROWN's ATROCITY EXHIBITION
3: Ambient Pop: MOON SAFARI BY AIR
4: Jazz (Pop) Rock: STEELY DAN's AJA
5: Art Pop: BJORK'S VASPERTINE
Thankyou for saving me 10 minutes :)
@@realnegajpeg9935 the purpose is give people stuff they might not have tried and he literally says that they aren't the most underground/obscure albums. Naturally the suggestions aren't all underground as that wasn't he purpose.
@@realnegajpeg9935 tbf, you made a completely irrelevant comment
Thank you sir!
You mean Tricot?
The other benefit of Steely Dan is that their discography is big enough that I always have a present for my dad on his birthday
*Jotaro sounds intensifies*
I have a playlist of every Steely Dan album from Can't Buy a Thrill through Aja and finishing with FM from the movie soundtrack. It's all just right!

Good job sheep!
Ah yes, I too am sheep
You're only supposed to do that with Fantano
Also fun fact: Danny was very much influenced by Bjorks discography for the sounds of Atrocity Exhibition itself
Really?
Her discography is near perfection
Don't forget the album title was named after the Joy Division song of the same name.
Ehh human behaviour by bjork sounds like a mid point between joy Division and atrocity exhibition
Also by Talking Heads
I am so happy you mentioned Bjork. She is incredible in the way she incorporates art, fashion, technology, and experiments with different songs in her music. She truly is one of a kind.
Got my name from that Steely Dan album and it’s a pride I display often
omg tricot!! i haven’t seen anyone recommend them ever, it’s like a really special treasure being discovered for the first time

i’m genuinely sorry man it’s good shit
@@anthysis7059 This happened to me with Magdalene by FKA twigs. I hope time heals the wounds cause damnnnnn I loved that album,
That sucks dude. Maybe try a different album by her, maybe her post breakup albums (Vulnicura and Utopia) would fit.
My .. Heart .. Goes out to you 💜
That's awful. I hope you can listen to her again someday, especially Vulnicura and Utopia (in that order). I was amazed at the change of tone showing her healing between the two
You NEEEEED to listen to Deathconsciousness by Have a Nice Life it is my favorite album of all time and it will change your life
What a coincidence I just listened to it today for the first time and I found mind blowingly good totally second that
badlula you are an absolute king. If you haven’t heard Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennaes To Heaven by Godspeed You! Black Emperor HIGHLY recommend as well. It’s pretty much tied for my #1.
Yeah it’s AMAZING one of my favourites as well
But wow I think I liked Deathconsciousness even more
That album is god tier 🤩🤩
I'm not sure why but I love Unnatural World much more than Deathcon. Deathcon is great, no doubt, but Unnatural World just makes me f e e l
honestly kate bush changed the way i view music, she's still ahead of the musical curve 30 years later, and still can't be described by a genre.
any sort of quirky art pop musician from today owes their career to her.
I agree. It's funny when he was talking about Björk (who I love) I felt like he really should have mentioned that she's been hugely influenced by Kate Bush. Kate is a true innovator and a lot of art pop musicians owe it to her for paving the way with her wonderful work.
God i love Kate bush 😢❤️
@@Missjunebugfreak Kate is cool but I think some give her too much credit as she herself also had her influences (Laura Nyro is one of them, I think). Bjork did say she respects her and lists The Dreaming as one of her favorite albums, but I think musically she's too different.
Nader Abed
Dude, everyone have influences. Of course. And whether you were influenced or influential doesn’t really matter to the quality of the music, except that it changes the context of the music. Bottom line is that Kate Bush is an absolute genius :-)
here in uk she is called the first leading lady of progressive rock ,and the last of the originals
If anyone is looking for a good psychedelic album, American Head by The Flaming Lips was recently released
Thanks for commenting this!! I literally just listened to it and its really good👌👌
Best album from them in years imo, maybe since Yoshimi.
Thank you. I missed this release
When Danny brown was brought up i AUTOMATICALLY thought of Ain't it Funny to this very day I haven't heard a song with that unique of a sound
One of my favorites from him is Ego Death ft Busdriver and Aesop Rock, but that's partly because Aesop is by far my #1.
@@-user_redacted- That track is fucking hilarious, the way Danny come's in at the end is amazing and made me laugh so much when I first heard it since I didn't know he was on it beforehand

Try LORN, his industrial trippy electro makes me feel things I cant say.
Its amazing
Didn't he have a song on LittleBigPlanet?
LORN is a god, anvil still gives me goosebumps
A Lorn @. Hello freind
Om Unit- Underated af
HTRK- Psychic 9-5 club and Summer Rain
Here are 5 albums I'd recommend:
Jimi Hendrix-Are You Experienced
Parliament/Funkadelic- Maggot Brain
Bob Marley- Exodus
David Bowie: Low
Brian Eno: Before and After Science
Just listened to Maggot Brain for the first time last week and my mind was blown!
@@camach. Maggot Brain is one of my top 10 favorite albums ever. The title instrumental is one of the most raw and moving performances I've ever heard, and the range of influences from metal to big band make it one of the best funk albums ever imo.
@@thedopestbody Nah, man, Funk is superficial. Maggot Brain is pure unadulterated Phenomenal, Cosmic Omniversal Astral Rockin' Blues. Eddie Hazel's magnificent guitar solos on songs like the title track and Super Stupid represent even greater heights that George Clinton failed to surpass with Parliament, Knee-Deep, and Atomic Dog. The Lyrics aren't on the same level as something by Dylan, sure, but the album itself is definitely worth a listen too.
@@TheAvizanski I'll definitely check yours out. Some of my favourites are
Prince - Sign 'O' the times
Keane - Hopes and Fears
Simple Minds - New Gold Dreams
The Stone Roses - Stone Roses
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
Jesus christ why the hell would you put marley next to all these legendary albums.
My recommendations
Grimes - Art Angels (electropop , artpop)
Beach House - Depression Cherry ( dream pop, shoegazing)
Fontaines DC - Dogrel ( post punk)
Goat Girl - Goat Girl ( psych-rock, psychedelic, post punk)
Half Japanese - Charmed Life ( outsider music, experimental rock, lo-fi)
Mgmt - Congratulations ( psych-pop, experimental rock)
Art Angels is just otherworldly. Grimes is so ahead of her time. Even with Miss Anthropocene
I've been listening to Beach House for years and I never knew what exact genre they're called. First time I've heard of shoegazing, sounds pretty cool.

5 albums that blew my mind on my journey through music:
John Coltrane -Òle
Aphex Twin - Drukqs
Stevie Wonder - Songs In The Key of Life
Jonny Greenwood - The Master
JPEGMAFIA - All his singles from 2020
All his singles from 2020 is also my favourite jpegmafia album
YESYESYES john coltrane and aphex twin, delicious
@William Magee Oh I didn't say the albums were obscure in anyway. These albums were just the first ones that helped open my mind to new music when I first heard them. There is no right or wrong answers when it comes to music. It's all about the context of what you've heard before that determines what you're gonna enjoy.
When it comes to free jazz I think Ascension is not a good choice to introduce someone to the genre. You'll have them running for the hills scared if they don't have context for that kind of music. If we are looking for albums from Coltrane Sun Ship and Transition would be great. They have a little bit more structure but are just as wild and free. Easier to grasp on to.
But like I said before whatever the genre you can't really introduce it to someone by just listing your favorite albums and telling them to listen. Your music tastes changes organically over a long periods of time. All about context.
Peace.
@@Nikoych That bass on Olé's first track still haunts me and Aisha is unspeakably beautiful. Also I agree with what you said about the subjectivity of music. There are so many albums that I love today that I wasn't able to enjoy on first listen, but after listening to other stuff I was able to come back to them and really digest the music completely
@@PedroAugusto-tb2zo Yes! I still haven't heard anything that sounds like Òle when it comes to bass playing. Just insanity. Great introduction for anyone looking to get into jazz.
It's a fantastic feeling when you come back to an album that you really didn't get previously and suddenly it all seems clear. Thousands of gems to be found when you keep an open mind.
Aja Is probably one of the most pleasant sounding albums ever made.
5 amazing albums i’ve been listening to a lot recently
Slanted and Enchanted- Pavement

Radiohead expanded my musical tastes more than any other band. From Burial to Arcade Fire, Four Tet to The National.
I listened to arcade fire but it didn’t hit me like Radiohead did
Same thing. Radiohead led me to discovered Kendrick Lamar to Bjork.
That Danny Brown album was fire and none of my friends agreed
You need new friends ig
My friends think I'm stupid for not liking Juice Wrld, Lil Baby and all these mainstream trap rappers or singers.
Like dude, I'd rather be listening to Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown or even some old school Childish Gambino.

Thank you so much for the recommendations! I've been in a terrible music drought lately and this really opened me up to Tricot and Air! Feel like I've got a wild journey ahead of me with both of these artists :)
So mine would be:
The White Stripes - Elephant (blues rock)
Foals - Total Life Forever (accesible math rock)
Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory (experimental hip hop)
Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R (stoner rock)
Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (neo soul)
Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly (hip hop with countless influences)
Daft Punk - Random Access Memories (disco/electronic)
Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia (nu disco)
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say That I Am, That's What I'm Not (punk/garage)
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (post-punk)
I love this list
Rivers of Nihil - Where Owls Know my Name (Tech-Death-Prog-Neo-Melo-Black-Djent-Doom-Jazz-Metal)
Total life forever isn’t really math rock but fantastic album non the less :)
@@liamrobinson5303 I'd argue it's like a transition from the definitely math rock Antidotes to the more arena-oriented Holy Fire. There are still some shades from the debut, like those intricate riffs from After Glow and Blue Blood for example. It's beautiful.
Total life forever has that bit of transition from math in Antidotes (This Orient, What Remains and the absolute gorgeus end to Blue Blood) and the beggining of their Alternative and more accesible stuff from Holy Fire (Black Gold, Miami and TLF) however it comes to their most soothing and comforting sound and it’s own thing. Their best imo. Absolutely beautiful album

Plz make more music recommendation videos! During a time like this where everyone is stuck at home I think I speak for us all when I say we need all the content and music we can get
I'd pretty much heard of everything mentioned here but i was especially grateful for the Tricot shoutout because they're just amazing. I know some people are resistant to listening to music in other languages but tricot transcends that. They're so good at what they do.
Thanks for this Alfo! Moon Safari is one of my favourite albums, but I don't know your other recommendations and I'm really looking forward to getting into them
Bro I forgot about slint and I literally looked through all my saved music for hours trying to find breadcrumb trail but I couldn’t remember either names. Ur a life saver. Love the channel DOIN GODS WORK⚡️🌩🌚
Hearing björk - lionsong and rediscovering björk from my childhood, expanded everything of myself, I found music that made me feel at home. I made connections with new people through my love of the new music and I found myself helping myself with these music as a sorta meditative process.
My recommendations in no particular order:
Low - Double Negative [indie rock, sadcore, glitch-pop, art pop]
World's End Girlfriend - Hurtbreak Wonderland [experimental rock, noise, glitch, breakcore, modern classical, post-rock]
Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz [experimetnal pop, glitch, noise, indie folk, electropop]
Danny Brown - uknowhatimsayin [alternative hip hop]
Tarentel - From Bone to Satellite [post-rock, experimental rock, noise]
Mono - You Are There [post-rock, modern classical]
Envy - Insomniac Doze [post-hardcore, screamo, post-rock]
Mogwai - Mogwai Young Team [post-rock]
Süleyman Tekin Gürmen Glasgow represent 👌
If you like World's End Girlfriend, I'd also add Vampillia (since they are signed to his label). Can't even name the genre you just gotta experience it. They are definitely inspired by Joe Hisashi's music but also by Mr Bungle and black metal. Shit's bonkers!
@@mishab4065 It's a bit difficult to define what genre exactly WEG is known for, but some people do actually classify as post-rock because of no vocals and some rock instrumentation too (as Simon Reynolds said that the genre is best described as "rock music using rock instrumentation for non-rock purposes, using guitars as facilitators of timbre and textures rather than riffs and power chords" in his review on Hex by Bark Psychosis, the first ever post-rock album that coined the term itself) but most of the stuff that he in fact has done from Farewell Kingdom to his most recent mini-album Meguri is described as a hybrid between glitch and modern classical because of classical instrumentation like violin and cello and simultaneous skipping and chopping that 65dos would incorporate in their music. The point is that his music is genreless at one point, because he actually reinvents itself at each album (e.g. Ending Story was a glitchy plunderphonics record with IDM touches on tracks 2 and 7. But when we get to Hurtbreak Wonderland, it sounds like a completely different artist but with the same glitchy spirit of his earlier works.) This guy is very difficult to get into, and some people (who are not into the glitch genre and his music overall) might find his glitchy mix with classical and post-rock annoying. If you really want a great introduction to this guy, check out his collaboration with Mono, they released a handful of albums that can be considered post-rock. But yeah I understand your point.
Uknowwhatimsayin was lowkey more fun than atrocity. I see why critics would rate atrocity higher but for an avg music fan, uknowwhatimsayin is much more enjoyable.
Considering he already recommended Danny already, I recommend JPEGMAFIA-Veteran after Atrocity Exhibition, then The Money Store- Death Grips after Veteran
I'm so glad you put a spotlight on math rock, so much good stuff that people really sleep on in that genre. I highly reccomend Twin Galaxies by Delta Sleep.
Thank you a lot! I'm going to listen to all of these albums and artists
So glad you mentioned atrocity exhibition
Idk if it's a good starting point but it's a damn good album
D. P. It seems somewhat easier to get into than other experimental hip hop albums though
@@alienjack6375 I beg to differ because of his voice. I think something like RTJ4 or 2 would be a better starting point
D. P. Fair enough. Something like the rtj’s then atrocity exhibition
@@pd9052 I can definitely agree with that. I hated Danny the first few times I heard him, but as I heard more I grew to really enjoy his work.

As well as Jazz Rock, Jazz Rap is absolutely beautiful too. Loyle Carner is a perfect example of this especially his songs with Tom Misch imo
Thanks for making this video. I've been in a filter of just metal and classical music lately, so its good to hear something different.
Already listen to Björk and Danny Brown but I fell in love with your other suggestions too. Thanks man.
I’d say another recommendation for dream pop imo would be “Ceres & Calypso into the Deep Time” by Candy Claws. It’s absolutely gorgeous, and it’s very nature based and good at creating a nice atmosphere.
I’m a simple man. I see Björk. I click.

Björk is truly something else.
Thank you so much for this list.
Nice video! Loved the Soft Machine clips to introduce Jazz Rock.
Relevant response: Cuneiform Records recently released another phenomenal archival Soft Machine performance. This one is sorta special. It is from a brief period with a short-lived lineup. Has 3 European shows (not all three in their entirety) from ‘69 when Elton Dean joined Ratledge, Wyatt, and Hopper. This band would go on to make my personal favorite material from the band throughout the many incarnations and evolutions they had. The fun, rare component is that the super talented Lyn Dobson initially came on board alongside Dean. It’s great. Any Cuneiform SM release is worthwhile. The band on the recent release, Facelift, is Dean on alto and saxello, Hopper on electric bass (‘60s Fender Jazz Bass at this point. He and Babbington used Shaftesbury fuzz boxes, and mostly Hiwatt stacks. As a bassist myself, it’s dream gear for dream sounds), Wyatt behind the drums, and sometimes vocals (whether improvised pseudo-vocalese sorta stuff or in traditional manners), Ratledge was really getting into the Pianet electric piano, but had what was like a Lowery electric organ that he utilized beautiful. Dobson tackles flute, harmonica, tenor sax, and I believe a soprano sax too. Dobson had a great career, and maintained strong ties with other Canterbury artists after departing Soft Machine. Nick Drake, Keef Hartley, John Martyn (perhaps other Pentangle associated artists too, Henry Lowther, the great Neil Ardley, etc. etc.
My taste in music has always been very diverse since I was young. I dont know how you could only listen to one genre or not explore, wouldn't that get boring, there's so much music in the world people who say they don't like music haven't found it yet.

One subgenre of music I've been into is jazz fusion. If you're into instrumental music, jazz fusion is essentially a blend of jazz and funk music. Probably the most foundational album in the subgenre is Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock, but I'd also recommend Heavy Weather by Weather Report. Chameleon (Head Hunters) and Birdland (Heavy Weather) are some of the most standout tracks jazz has to offer.
from heavy weather I think palladium is also good.
Fusion has massive albums overseas as well, especially Japan. If you check out T-Square you get these super complex jazz textures that sound like Mario Kart tracks, it's so fire, their songs Truth and Daisy Fields are so cheesy it's comes right back around to being cool. Massive recommendation there.
If you like those bands, then you will definitely like the band Snarky Puppy.
D. D. Holy shit dude I was about to recommend Snarky lol.
there's some really shit stuff that gets called jazz fusion, but also some real gems. It's a name that has really held back the good stuff.
Thanks for the video, I just subscribed and saved all these albums on Spotify! I know I like literally any genre of music (yes even country) so i don’t know where to start when wanting to find new music to listen to bc there’s just so much great stuff out there, so this was very helpful.
I watched this video ageess ago to just take the first recommendation you gave and dip. I’m coming back because I’m so thankful for the tricot recommendation and want more. CGPP IS MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE AS WELL I LITERALLY SCREAMED WHEN I HEARD YOU SAY THAT RN. It gives me the vibe of the last episode of an anime series. It’s got an emotional feel especially with the slower paced guitars playing at the very start. Sometimes I feel like it should really be the last song on the album.
Deaths - Symbolic got me into death metal, so I guess that's a good album to expand your taste.
I agree with the Math Rock take so much. When people ask if guitar music will be revolutionized again, I think Midwest Emo and Math Rock is the genre that is doing that most currently. Sleepy Dog and Tiny Moving Parts. Good stuff
i think definitely that and the metal community
TMP is the shit! I also think Free Throw and TTNG are great for Emo/Math Rock stuff
Only instrumental but check out Standards too!
more of the videos! this is dope
This is a wonderful video. Thank you.
Since everyone's recommending something obscure, the most obscure subgenre of music that I love is called "Ethnic electronica", a cross between ambient tribe music and electronica.
My favorite song of that kind is
Deep Forest -Sweet Lullaby
Some random guy from Reddit recommended it to me and I never looked back since lmao.
Greetings Beautiful soul (forgive me abit i know I am not exactly what you may have come here for ..) but my name is Ibn Orator...I am an Avant-Garde, introspective & Political Hip Hop Artist from New Haven CT. I've recently released a project titled "The Fishbowl Syndrome" that is centered around the topic of our mental health and how art is sometimes viewed here in America;to which my first debut music video "The Horse on a Trampoline" works showcase on the spectrum of my own experiences with it, that i feel fans alike of FKA twigs, Janelle Monae , EarthGang, Flying lotus, Childish Gambino or those of Bjork, Kanye West, Lady Gaga , Lupe Fiasco, & Vince staples may resonate with...id like to share this with you by giving a warm welcome to my Channel to not only, like and subscribe but to comment with genuine feedback. (Please leave a comment there underneath the video and not here) as i would like for my listeners to feel welcomed to give more in thought than in clout and start a conversation which is what my subject matter is based on ..."Commentary on our shared world".In hopes that this may be fruitful to you i look forward to your response

All the best
Ibn Orator
P.S. these times being hard is an understatement for alot of us ..so id like to say that i love you, if you haven't heard it from anyone and that things are about to change as they always do, for better or worse….#stayup!
My recommendations to people usually for different sounding music are:
Boards Of Canada: MHTRTC
Aphex Twin: Richard D James
Bjork: Homogenic
Oxbow: Thin Black Duke
Deltron 3030: self titled
Thin Black Duke is such a hidden gem
Deltron impressed me way beyond my expectations. The sci fi shit was pretty cool
Solid picks!
Thanks dude! I know every record here except oxbow, solid recommendation!
@@davidm9026 "Serenade in Red" is their best album, imo.
Thank you Alfo I'll check these out!
Great picks, thank you!
I'll throw in 5 of my favorite semi-obscure experimental albums that I think are good for beginners:
Codeine- Frigid Stars LP (1990, slowcore)
Slowcore was a subgenre of rock that developed adjacent to grunge and alt-rock in the late 80's and early 90's. It tackled many of the same nihilistic themes, but instead of the loud and unpolished sound of grunge, it used a slower, more atmospheric sonic pallette. This is my personal favorite slowcore record, mostly just for how crushingly sad it is. With how slow and lethargic the instrumentation can be, it really does portray the feeling of depression and not being able to move, while also being hauntingly beautiful at times.
Boards of Canada- Music Has the Right to Children (1998, IDM)
The mid to late 90's were a boom time for forward thinking electronica, the best of which came from Boards of Canada's 1998 debut. This album focuses less on dance rhythms and more on psychedelic soundscapes and catchy melodies. The repetitive song structures allow the production to almost put you in a trance.
Dalek- From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots (2002, experimental hip hop)
Dalek are basically the godfathers of industrial rap. One listen to this and you can trace the lineage of albums like Yeezus and The Money Store. The production is extremely eclectic, pulling inspiration from everything from metal to psychedelia, but my favorite aspect is the rapping. MC Dalek has a butter-smooth voice that he uses to deliver esoteric but well-crafted lines about things other rappers wouldn't even conceive of.
The Caretaker- An Empty Bliss Beyond This World (2011, ambient)
This album was based on a scientific study claiming that Alzheimer's patients could still remember the music they listened to when they were younger, as well as thoughts and feelings associated with that music, which might be the most unique album concept I've ever heard. It's basically a hauntingly beautiful sound collage of music from the 1930's and 40's. I'd also recommend Everywhere At the End of Time, which tackles similar themes, but it's a lot less accessible.
Clipping- Splendor & Misery (2016, conscious hip hop)
Clipping are best known for making grimey, industrial hip hop (the same kind Dalek makes), but on their sophomore effort, they get a bit more high-concept. Splendor & Misery follows the story of a runaway slave in the distant future, alone on a spacecraft drifting through the galaxy with nothing to guide him but his machine. The sparse production and theatrical rapping help to emphasize the album's dark and isolating atmosphere, while slave songs are sampled throughout the album to tie the past, present, and future together.
@William Magee I'm totally unfamiliar with the genre, and am fully aware that Boards of Canada are great.
Thanks for recommending Dalek. I hadn't heard anything from him before, but he sounds good so far and I'm looking forward to checking more out.
Inb4 100 gecs meme
Great picks. Tricot is such a great introduction to Math Rock. Where I personally got into the genre through retroactively checking out Hella because of Death Grips and in effect w as s diving right into the less accessible version of the genre, I really appreciate the way Tricot takes all that complexity and technical ability but also has just as much Pop sensibility. It's definitely not easy to compose something so complex but also easy to pick up on first listen.
Also, I think AE is one of the best introductions to experimental rap. It definitely has so much potential to give people a more out there experience with Rap while also rooting it in enough accessibility to make it more palatable than more overt exprriemtnal records.
Thanks for shouting out Tricot! One of the best math rock bands out today. Thank you Topshlef Records for signing them in the US.
Aja was a fantastic record, so glad steely dan got some love here.
Vespertine and Atrocity Exhibition are in my top five albums of all time lmao, great list tho
Really liked this video! Definetly found one or two new artists to listen to! Hope you'll do another one in the future, maybe with more artists or different genres!
You had me at Tricot! Great to see somebody give them love
Steely Dan is easily one of my favorite bands of all time. From Aja to Can’t Buy a Thrill to Pretzel Logic, they can’t miss.
Prince, used to like uk band field music, some of their stuff is like the dan and peter gabriel
Awh common man, when you started on experimental hip hop I was soo hoping you were gonna go with Clipping,
Danny Brown’s good too tho
ALL of these are exquisite choices 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Great recommendations. I love it!
If you are a beginner..
MBDTF - Kanye West
In Rainbows - Radiohead
Another Green World - Brian Eno
Stop Making Sense - Talking Heads
Abbey Road - The Beatles
Everywhere at the End of Time - The Caretaker
SAW 85-92 - Aphex Twin
Heaven or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins
VHS - CASTLEBEAT
Spiderland - Slint
Aja - Steely Dan
Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
Tago Mago - CAN
In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
Debut - Björk
Some of these have eclectic sounds embedded in them, would be a good start for a new listener to get into different genres and acquire a good taste in music...imo
MF Aphex Heads I think Caretaker type is for more focused listeners, that album takes a toll on you mentally, and is one hell of a listen. As for the essentials for some beginners, Bjork debut, Abbey Road, In Rainbows, ITCOTCK, and MBDTF are all great place to start.
there are sone great albums in that list but p much everybody loves the beatles, i don't think Abbey Road would expand your music taste by much(not that you shouldn't hear it), it's not even the most experimental beatles album.
I would add
Rush - 2112
Death Grips - The Money Store
The Dear Hunter - Act V
Oceansize - Frames
Igorrr - Hallelujah (mix of grindcore and electronic, very open mind needed)
Stolen Babies - (they have just 2 albums and they are all great, think girly pop meets alt metal)
O'Death - Out of Hands We Go (very dark and spooky country, they are a hell of musicians)
Tiger Lillies - Freakshow (think the internet's funniest shitpost but with circus music)
The Velvet Underground & Nico
The Clash - London Calling
Both essentials imo
In Rainbows is the best album I’ve listened to in my life. I’ve listened to hundreds too. Great suggestions though!
Lateralus by TOOL changed my life, especially when listening to the album as a whole. They’ve always been my favourite band but I never listened to the entire album as a whole until a few months ago. It’s one of the best albums ever made imo
good prog
loved this vid :D i always wanna listen to new stuff but sooo many people online are super gatekeepy about the music they listen to. I'm gonna listen to these recommendations asap

Loved this. For Jazz Rock, I’d recommend Jaga Jazzist. Seriously impressive and listenable long plays.
Bless you for shouting out tricot, one of my favorite rock bands working today easily. Their albums 3 and Makkuro are my favorites, I need to go revisit their older stuff some more.
One of those bands that just doesn't have a bad release. You will really enjoy their older stuff! Also, they have a new album coming out October 21.
I recommend my all time favorite album 'CALIGULA' by Lingua Ignota (classical/extreme metal/noise)
Standout tracks: DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR, BUTCHER OF THE WORLD and IF THE POISON WON'T TAKE YOU MY DOGS WILL.
"It's about my experience in Providence, speaking out about abuse and feeling invalidated, and people who I thought were my friends no longer being my friends, and the crushing experience of how that feels." -Lingua Ignota speaking to The Guardian about CALIGULA.
Didn't know the Steely Dan and tricot's albums. Gonna check them out. Also props for choosing Vespertine out of all albums in Bjork's catalogue.
You introduced me to Moon Safari and for that I am thankful.
