@ac360lover17 California Arts Graduates are notorious for reusing designs. The auctioneer has Smee's head construction and Merlin's nose and hands, and some copying of Stromboli's body motion. (Not to disparage this scene's animator Cliff Nordberg, one of the greatest action animators who ever lived. this scene just doesn't show him off well - the reason he's on here is because he waited a few years longer before retirement than his chums did. He was in his 70s and slipping.)
"He's a strong donkey. He's gentle and kind, and good enough to be in a KING'S stable."
And he ended up in the stable of the king of kings
@@KingJoffreyII I actually like how that was more ambigious, a bad writer would just spell it out. Donkey got a good master, that was all it mattered.
Those merchants said the auctioneer was "jolly," they never said he was nice.
I really wish I could find the whole cartoon somewhere. I really enjoy it and haven't been able to find it for years. Thank you for uploading this!
Maybe late reply. But Disneyplus has it now. I never saw it before yesterday, was a very beautiful story
2:45 Well look at that, it's not every day you see an ass kicking an ass.
If that fat auctioneer was a donkey he’d be fat one
1:38 a similar crowd shot was used in "The Sword in the Stone"
Gotta love recycled animation
@@Wolfbane8 Speaking of recycle animation you know this boy mirrors Mowgli from the jungle book at some point
@@jamessparkman6604 yup. And the auctioneer looks a lot like a mix between Captain Hook, Stromboli, and King Louie.
@@thomashuffman3237And Tony
such animal abuse. If I have 1000 pieces of silver, I'd buy Small One, a gentle and kind creature would be the ideal of a pet
the little boy looks just like mowgli!
He’s a boy? I thought he was a girl
Yeah, but they were voiced by two different American actors.
the auctioneer reminds me of the puppiteer guy in ponochio
I was thinking the same thing
Stromboli
And King Louie.
It’s because they show cruelty to the protagonists.
Rest in Peace Hal Smith (the voice of the Auctioneer)😔🙏🏻

apparently its out on dvd in Classic Cartoon Favorites, Vol. 9 - Classic Holiday Stories. its on amazon for 11.49.
The auctioneer looks like a cross between Borf from Don Bluth's "Space Ace" and Tony from Disney's "Lady and the Tramp".
With Elliott also animated by Don Bluth & crew. ; )
Reminds me of the time I tried to sell my 1972 Mercury Marquis to a Persian car dealer.
The Auctioneer geting angry, he turns red the face and the eyes!
2:40 Is The Boy from The Small One (1978) wearing red swimming trunks?
At 2:55 The Auctioneer turns red the face and the eyes!

Cliff Nordberg animates all of the Auctioneer, except the Chuck Harvey scene at 1:06.
