Thank you so much for this video! I’ve never heard of a buddy burner. I was a Campfire Kid, much more lame than Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts apparently. Our cats eat a disturbing amount of canned cat food in those shorty cans, and my mother in law is QVC’s best customer, so I’ll be snagging some cardboard when we visit this week! I learn so many cool things from your channel, even how to pressure can, and I really just can’t thank you enough!❤🇺🇸

I bet that would make a good little heater in a pinch, if you set a clay pot over top of it to capture the heat. You'd just have to put the clay pot on the rack to keep the air flowing. I've never seen this done before so I appreciate this video very much. Really cool, Jinne. About how long does one of these burn before they're pretty much spent?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS BRILLIANT SURVIVAL HACK, JINNE. I WAS A GIRL SCOUT FOR SEVERAL YEARS, BUT WE NEVER LEARNED TO MAKE ONE OF THESE (THAT MY OLD BRAIN CAN REMEMBER, ANYWAY. 🤔) AS YOU (MUCH TO MY FAMILY MEMBERS' FRUSTRATION) I SAVE EVERYTHING THAT I THINK WILL COME IN HANDY IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. AMONG OTHER THINGS IN MY STORAGE ROOM, I HAVE A BOX FULL OF ALL SIZES OF CANS, A BOX FULL OF VARIOUS SIZES OF GLASS JARS AND BOTTLES AND ANOTHER BOX FULL OF OLD CANDLE WAX. I have some of these that I made as a kid in Girl Scouts along with quite a few new ones I made. I always save wax pieces, broken candles, etc. Besides tuna cans and cat food cans this size I also saved the smaller cat food cans. A friend and I pooled all of our wax pieces and made over 50 small candles with those. You can also save used birthday candles and use them as little wicks when making these or making smaller candles.

@@cgarcia4487 I haven't actually burned any of the stove type cans all the way through to give you a time. I have used them and then put the flames out by covering them to smother the flames. I have had the candles I've made from the small cans burn several hours but again, I've never burned any of them completely out. I have these things put away for emergencies and don't make a habit of burning them unless I really need to.

Found out later that that was not part of the school curriculum but for some reason she taught it anyways and now it is 2023 and I still have that one tuna can to this day.

Good video to explain how to make and use these little can-candles. I find them to be a great little 'back up' for in-home cooking, if needed. I have made them, and I use a #10 can lid to extinguish the flames from my tin-can candles. Crimp the lid's sharp edges so they're safe and can't cut your fingers. Then add a layer or two of duck tape strips along the edge of the lid. (Cut the duck tape to thin strips) The #10 can lid is large enough to completely cover the tin-can candles and not burn the duck taped edges. The fire will go out quickly using a lid like this.

I combine it with an upside down number 10 can, that I cut a flap in the bottom to slide the waxed cardboard tin through., instead of the rack. It raises the pan higher and the pan doesn't turn black. I still put it on the stove like you did with with a cookie sheet or something like that to hold it safe on the stove.

Greetings and blessings from southeast Louisiana.. Hope you and your family fared well during the recent hurricane.
In case we do get winter this year I'm looking forward to trying this out. Also, I like having a pot of water boiling allowing the steam to add moisture and heat into the air when it isn't chilly enough to turn on the furnace or the fireplace only provides heat in the living room. The idea of using saved cardboard, wax and tuna cans inside the house is fascinating; using saved larger chicken and turkey tins, too...I have a rocket stove, propane, etc. but this is another backup for my backups. Still have the a/c on, probably 'til November or December (?) but will give this a try shortly. I have canned meats, etc. so as not to need extended cooking/prep time. Hubby says this has been around for a long time but this is a" first" for me.
    Thanks and hugs, Jinni

Putting the pot with the wax in another pot, just like you do it with chocolate, also has another important advantage: It prevents the wax from catching fire as it only gets as hot as the boiling water.

Just found your channel a couple weeks ago and I'm hooked! Real solutions for real people with a nice doss of humor. What else could you ask for? Today you were reading my mind. Lost power over the weekend and got out my Ecoflow. I used it for simple things and 4 teapots of water. Then it went dead. So, each pot cost me $250. 😢 So, I thought, time to find a way to make tea without using fuel because I'm not giving up my tea. AND THERE YOU WERE WITH MY ANSWER! I almost fell over. Going to dollar tree to load up on cheap candles and will make a few thousand of these. I'll need to dumpster dive for cans, but it's a small price to pay. Next I'm going to let you teach me to can!!!

You did an exceptional teaching video on a buddy burner. I am new at prepping, I was checking out Amazon on different types of camping stoves. Do you think having a butane camp stove is good to use inside of the house. I do have a wood burning fireplace I use for heat in the winter if it ever gets cold enough. I live in Phoenix AZ and it doesn't get too cold at my location, however with the Monsoon storms have caused blackouts for a few hours on end and I have only an electric stove for cooking.
I would appreciate your thoughts or direction. I enjoy your Dollar Tree and Walmart food hauls for the pantry.

I recently made some Buddy Burners from slightly larger cans. The largest can I used was a Dinty Moore beef stew can. (I think the height to width ratio is the most important factor, you want the can to be no taller than the width of the can) I also used the extra large tuna & chicken cans. Another thing I do is stuff a match down in the center of the Buddy Burner. I found some 'Made in Mexico' matches that are made from some kind of twisted waxed paper instead of wood or plain paper. They make perfect wicks for the Buddy Burners, making them easier to light.
Edit: Don't forget to save the lid from each can you use to make Buddy Burners... Dropping the original lid on it makes it safer & easier to extinguish the flame when you're done using it.
