- Lonnie shows some tips and info for staying warm all night when in a lean-to or other open type shelter. Come along with me as I spend the night in my lean-to at 6 degrees above Zero Fahrenheit
Recipe used in video is as follows
Jonnie Lake Beans And Rice
-3.25 cups water ( more may be needed during cooking process)
-1.5 cubes of bullion chicken flavoured
-0.5 cup short grain long cook rice
-0.25 cup pinto beans
-3 tbs chopped dehydrated veggies
-0.5 teaspoon minced dried onions
one third can diced spam or equivalent bacon
-bayou blend spice or cajun seasoning
Add all ingredients into cooking pot and simmer until done (beans are soft)
Ending song: "Tucson" found in RUclips Audio Library
What a badass. Just playin his flute out in the wilderness by a fire in the middle of the night... Hes the uncle we all need.
derbin4048 for real
Really appreciate your calm voice
unbelievable that you got these freezed logs to flames. good video
+Survival Lilly It does not sound logical but there is very little moisture in the dead dry standing wood that I harvest and in reality it doesn't burn much different than it does during the summer. Thank you my friend for taking the time to watch and comment
somehow any dead standing wood i've come across, most of it was absolutely rotten, full of moisture... probably wrong species... i guess spruce and pine are more likely to be dry? :)
duh i forgot i'd already mentioned this, sorry :)
Survival Lilly oh heh I know you lol
Far north. thanks for teaching a grown man how to make a fire. I made one for the first time about a year ago from watching you. Long fires for the win. I made it out of ...maybe peach. It last around 24 hours, a piece was still there. Added a log next to it, and it started itself over.
Anyhow, you mean a lot to me brother, and you got me into this way of life.
Also, survivor Lilly, I watch you sometimes too. good videos, especially on herbs and plants. I've noticed. So, thank you too.
Finally, Lilly, Where I am in Ohio, I don't know if its the hardwoods or what but, yeah, the wood here seems to burn in winter, in this long fire configuration, and they are impervious to rain or snow...pretty much.
you know Lonnie, there are so many yt channels explaining stuff, showing this and that, where you learn a lot surely, and so one... your channel is a mix of that, but the most important thing is that your videos are that kind of videos where you finish to watch it and you just want to take the rucksack , sleeping bag and go outside. and im sure very much people do that ;) i think these are the best kind of videos :) greeting from italy
+Pescho Anvi Greetings to you from Alaska. Thank you for the kind words. Several folks have said that after watching this vidoe it made them want to head for the woods and experience the outdoors. That is great words of encouragement for me to hear / see.
Absolutely, agreed with Pescho. Also, the amount of work that goes into making these videos, setting up, "acting" (as it were), shooting, editing, rendering, I hope you know it's immensely appreciated, the work you do for us viewers.
+adarkerlight Thank you very much for those encouraging words. It all would not be worth it if not for you folks who watch.
+Thomas “Bibsoutdoors” Haines I appreciate the kind words of encouragement. You folks who watch my videos will never know how much *YOU* have helped *ME*. You viewers with your encouraging and positive words have done a lot to heal some "social scars" that others have left behind
+Far North Bushcraft And Survival love your honesty. soo refreshing.. sounds like we have a lot in common. glad to see i'm not the only one who had or has problems with society. you know the saying nice guys finish last, i'm beginning to think that it's true.. but it won't stop me from being who I am.. I guess I may not win the race but hopefully I will finish it knowing I did it with a good heart.
This has got to be my favorite video. Thank you for sharing it- I've watched it about 1800 times. God bless and protect y'all.
How many times now?
Its 2021, march...how many times now? :)
1800 wow almost as many times as I've watched Easyrider haha
Lonnie, all the best to you and Connie. Thank you for all you do for all of us. We appreciate you both! Stephen, Ohio
+BuckeyeBushcraft L. Thank you Stephen and you are welcome. Connie and I appreciate you folks as well.
The flute mixed with the crackling fire just sounds so peaceful!
+Commyboi Thank you. I enjoy playing the flute in those settings as well.
Can I just say I never new stuff like this before and I stared asking my grandpa if I could go out in the wild and stay a night alone and I used your techniques and they work perfectly and I never would have gotten to do this without these videos so can we all say thank you Lonnie 👍🏼😊
There is nothing better than sitting around a fire and enjoying the peace and thinking. I'm sure I would love those beans and rice. I dearly love Spam. I have been eating it since I was a wee fella. Love the hot water bottle trick. I sleep with a thick wool beanie that I can pull down around my ears and the back of my neck. Keeps me very warm while sleeping. What better way to wake up . A beautiful morning, hot beans and rice and a hot cup of coffee. That truly is a great life. Thanks for the video and a great time.
+dalton vickers You are welcome my friend and I agree. I toss and turn a lot in the night and a beany cap wont stay in place on me. I personally need a type hat that wraps under my neck to keep it on and also to keep it from spinning around on my head in the night. I have tried some face masks but they end up twisting and I wake up looking at the inside of the hat over my eyes lol.
I envy you Lonnie, and your lifestyle... I live in Northern West Virginia, the mountain state. I love the outdoors and everything that offers....... Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience with us, I appreciate it sir.
Hell of dish to wake up to, slow cooked and ready on waking, can't be beat for comfort or eating!
Thank you for the video. I lived in Fairbanks a while. Went up there for the job. Drove up there one early February. Rolled my pickup truck, busting all the tires and windows, off the road, down into a ravine, about 50 miles East of Tok. A couple of young men rescued us, my wife, my dog, and myself. The folks of Tok took care of us and got me to work in Fairbanks, early. The temperatures were down to 32 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. The snow was 2-3 feet deep. The best thing about The Alaskan wilderness is the people. They saved our lives. Lonnie, you are of that bunch. I will never forget that. God bless you. If you come down to central Texas, you have a place in my home. Texas
This video is a work of art.
Well Pal, your simple, honest approach is why many o us love You Tube outdoors vids....thanks for passing on the knowledge without any unnecessary fanfare or excessive ego.
+Julius Gonzo You are very welcome. Thank you for the kind words of encouragement.
I know I'm a little late to this video but I like his no nonsense approach to camping, most other RUclipsrs are trying to get you to buy way too much stuff for the occasion
I've been going to the woods for 55+ years,
Never thought of long fires before nice ,thanks lonny......
Extremely glad your doing these videos, I believe this sort of thing should be taught as a supplement added onto the school systems. While most see it as novelty these day's I see it as essential, people forget how to survive where dose that leave them worse comes to worse? I LOVE bushcraft and the outdoors, and useful things are what I love to learn and use and speaks to my Norse blood. Thank you for making these and explaining for people to learn from, not many seasoned bushcrafters share their know how with out high costs these day's...I will teach my kids all I know when there old enough to soak it up...piece of mind is what it is :)
This will probably be to much thou I hope you find appreciation of it. When I watch your videos they bring back so many good memories of my adopted Dad. Him and mom took me off the streets where I would run away from my real father. Gene taught me more about myself and survival after my grandad passed. He taught me the warriors way. I miss him so much. He's most likely with God yelling and screaming about the things he didn't agree with. So I know he's finally found peace. I have learned a lot from you Sir and I thank you. I thank you also for the memories.
+apacheredwolfe. Thank you for sharing that with us. It sounds like you had some people in your life that were made of tough fibers and were the real deal.
If not for them I would not be who I am today. And you sir greatly remind me of dad (Gene).
Wow, the flute adds so much to the video - cool to see that it's not just 'canned' music, but actually you playing it!!
I've gone back and watched your build videos for the native American flutes, along with some of Blue Bear's videos... Very cool!
I might give this a try over the weekend. :)
Just watched this video now. Beautiful. A man truly in tune with the environment he lives in. Loved the idea of breakfast. Might give it a try in my slow cooker - not half as exciting as being in the wilds, but one can dream. God bless.
Great video Lonnie. Someday you will have to show us more of your flute skills and how you made it
+Mark Young (Shunpyke) I do plan on making a video on making the flute. I am still very surprised at the interest generated by this flute.
Beautiful music will.get a man through many a hard time.. we are going to need flutes and songs and drums. Fiddles are going to be like rare gems...
A lot of people can survive in the wilderness, but if you want to feel completely at peace, be comfortable, well fed, and gain some wisdom, go with Lonnie.
Yep, you should do a camping album with that pipe. It tickles a part of my soul that makes me spend time in the wild.
The flute was the cherry on top, love the video.
+kirk olsen Thank you. I enjoy playing my homemade flute. Glad you like it.
Good to see the shelter in action in the snowy season! The trappers used to cache resources (traps, gear, sheet metal wood stoves, some food, axes, knives, tools, matches, cordage, etc), in many places along their lines, including their tiny cabins and shelters. I can imagine them caching dutch ovens in their many camps so they did not have to carry them. Upon arriving and bush camp, they emptied whatever meat and other grub they had into the DO, kindled the fire and walla, instant stew with whatever ingredients were at hand! A few spices, some salt, and preferably some extra fat, and they ate like kings!
This is like a spiritual experience. There is something inate that draws us to nature and makes us feel a part of the whole.
Thank you so much Lonnie for putting these together. After watching you put this series together over the fall, it was great to see it put it to use in an overnighter.
+David Anstey You are welcome. I too had been looking forward to spending the night there at the lean-to. Life just kept getting in the way much to often.
What a great breakfast to kick start day, beans is one of my favorite morning meals especially when I plan on having a long day, keeps you going for sure, looked delicious Lonnie ....!!!
+William Larkham Jr (Bigland Trapper) Thanks my friend for watching. I sure do enjoy this recipe. We developed this recipe while out at our cabin. we put all the ingredients in a pot and set on the woodstove all day or night to cook.
Man. This is one of the coolest videos ever. Talk about keepin' it real. This is what it's all about. Good job!
+SuperFreeamerican Glad you enjoyed the video. I enjoy doing these videos for folks who, like yourself, appreciates them.
love your no fancy pants way of doing things and your accent is easy on my lugs xx
I still can't get over just how quickly the weather changes in your part of the world. Come to think of it, I think I make that same comment around this time every year. I loved your flute playing and hope it will feature in future videos. Cheers from Oz.
+biggles1024 The last two years the winter acts like it just really is not sure if it wants to be winter or it wants to be summer. The weather will turn cold like typical winter and everybody thinks okay now winter has finally settled in. Next thing we know it is warming up again to above freezing and the snow and ice begins to melt then back to winter and back and forth all winter. This winter seems to be no different so far in that respect. We just went through a typical winter cold snap but now the forecast is saying we are going to be getting some above freezing temps next week along with some rain. This kind of weather makes it difficult for Connie and I to get out to our cabin and stay there for any length of time due to fear that the ice and snow that enabled us to get there may melt.
Good stuff Lonnie. I can never imagine you sleeping cold with such a wonderful beard haa.
All the best
Sandy
+Wiltshire Man lol. You know, I never notice the beard helping to keep me warmer all that much until I shave my beard off. Boy oh boy do I ever notice it then lol wow.
I really enjoyed this one.
I live vicariously through your videos, until we can get to the place where we can do it ourselves.
We’re in the 5th year of our 5 year plan to get to the high lonesome. Somewhere in the northern Rockies... maybe Alaska.
In my job, some days I have to spend time (hours) in a freezer that maintains between -10 to -30 degrees. I use a helmet liner also. Mine was made for tank drivers, and it does a great job of keeping my noggin warm. I also use it for cold camping.
Thank you for taking us on this adventure Lonnie, I really enjoyed it!!!
That flute playing was on point. nice job
Great video my mother used to use an old cider jug filled with hot water in my bed during the winter months, what I remember they made great hot water bottles, thanks for bringing us along.
+Randal Flagg A hot water filled cider jug would indeed make a great bed warmer. Thanks for dropping by for a spell.
Always informative and practical. Never that TV show survival BS. Thanks for everything you do. Keep it up.
Me and my daughter like watching your videos. We are lurning so much. Thank you.
Great video, thank you for sharing all those great tips about shelter & fire construction. Watching you have your "Johnny Lake beans" for breakfast made me hungry!
You're the best, Lonnie. Thanks for another great video.
+Benjamin Crouse Thank you very much. You are welcome. If it wasn't for my appreciative viewers such as yourself, there would be no reason to do these videos.
Guys as always great video....I learned many things from all of them...and really enjoy the peacefulness of them....
Thanks for a great peaceful show I can't wait for the next one
+dave smith Glad you are enjoying the vids. You are welcome and thank you.

I really enjoyed that, I appreciate all the time and effort you and your wife put forth on your videos. Thank you
+n8mayfield This video was indeed a lot of work to "pull it off". Life kept getting in the way and kept delaying this video. I was glad when everything fell into place that finally allowed the time to do the video.
it's always pleasant and very instructive videos. and for the flute was just the icing on the cake. take care !!!
+daniel saint-martin Thank you for the kind words. Glad you enjoy my home made PVC flute. My camcorder died in the middle of my flute playing session for this video. I guess I know what my camcorder thinks of my flute playing lol.
+Far North Bushcraft And Survival I was reminded of Dean Evenson's music. I hope you record more flute playing in the future so I can have it on in the background.
lovely flute music, it was perfect and seems like you.
Great outing my friend, thanks the kind i love!!!! thanks for taking us with you, all the best and stay safe out there, Taro
+Taromovies Swiss Bushcraft. Thank you and you are welcome. Thanks for stopping by and watching
i keep finding myself coming back to replay this video, especially when you’re playing the flute around the fire.
You're awesome Lonnie! As is your wonderful wife. I've been sub'd for quite a while, I just don't comment a whole bunch. I often find myself re-visiting your older videos. I just watched your latest video as well and love the set up. Just thought I would say thanks and look forward to your next video. Take care and be safe.
I'll tell you what. Whenever I'm having an insomnia episode I seek out one of your camp videos. First I learn and they are very relaxing to watch and listen to.
Great videos, I have learned tons from you and you have even saved me from narcotic sleep medicine. Lol thanks
+Adam Seeley Glad the videos are useful on a multi dimensional level. :o) Yeah those sleep meds are not good for a person in the long run.
Greetings from Finland Lonnie. Just wanted to that it's a joy to watch your videos! I feel privileged to see such high quality content.

+trevor parsons Thank you my friend. Glad you are still enjoying the videos. If it wasn't for you and the other viewers who are so supportive, there would be very little reason to continue producing these videos.
Hi Lonnie and Connie in Alaska from NH.
Just a Wonderful Video! I Love Beans & Rice & Spam, I'm from North Georgia, that's what I grew up eating, plus everything out of the garden and most things fried! Thanks for taking all of us with you, Y'all Take Care & Stay Warm!
+James White I see why you love the combo of beans rice and spam. It seems to be a great combo. Bacon is great in this recipe as well. My wife also loves her garden and we reap the benefits of fresh veggies all summer from her garden. Thanks for coming along via the camera lens. Atb to you and your loved ones as well.
Just stopped by for a nature buzz. Thanks again Lonnie.
Love your videos. Wish I was enjoying the peaceful outdoors with you sir!

Another fantastic video Lonnie! Thanks so much for taking us along! That breakfast looked pretty darn good to me! All the best, Dawn
+SouthPaw Bushcraft Thank you Dawn. I do love that recipe. My wife and I came up with that recipe when we were out at the cabin and the name stuck. We put everything in a kettle and leave it on the woodstove to cook all day.
An old mate of mine (now passed) who loved sailing the oceans in old wooden vessels always expressed the word simplicity to me " none of all this technology and rubbish they have today, that's you to a T Lonnie (meaning you are exactly the same) so relaxing and peaceful to watch👍.
I'm always so excited to see how you get it done in the woods.
So great.

+Paul Henry Thanks "Pops". It is probably not too late to make the move. Peace to you and your loved ones as well.
This is my favorite bushcraft channel. The info is straightforward and well explained. Your voice carries such an air of wisdom and truth. Native flute music is icing on the cake. A video on flute making, maybe?

You videos re the coziest! If there was a cafe that just did one pot dishes like your rice and beans, I would eat there all the time. Being out there in the wilderness, the great thing is any digestive side effects are just fine too, a man can be a man! I sure do admire your way to live with nature😊
Hey Lonnie
Thanks for another great and enlightening video, that Johnny Lake Beans & Rice sounds real good I am definitely going to give it a try.
You know Lonnie, every time I watch one of your video's I always learn something new that I want to try, and like many other people it makes me want to just get out there no matter what the weather is like. Thanks again my friend.
All the very best
Simon
+simon cook Sounds like I achieved one of my goals for the video if it makes you want to get out there. :o) Glad you are learning from the videos as well. That is another of my goals for these videos.
Beautiful, Beautiful intro. thank you for that.
Buck was the icing on the cake!
+aholesmith Thank you for those kind words. Glad you like the intro. Yep, Buck is my buddy and he generally goes wherever I go in the woods.

+funkyprepper Thank you
I'm glad you revisited the lean-to for a sleep over. Great vid.
+Zerkbern It was an enjoyable trip for me. Glad you liked the video.
Great video Lonnie. May you and Buc always find the Freedom trails. I'll not bemoan my own country to much only to say that men like you keep the dream alive for a lot of us over here, who have to live under a nanny state. May you and Buc always know free will and a warm fire. Halcyon days my friend.
+Robert Hiorns I very much appreciate those kind thoughts for me and Buck. I don't know what country you live in but am indeed sorry that you can not experience the same level of freedom that we have here. I will do my best to continue to produce these videos so that others such as yourself who may not have the freedom that we do, will at least get to experience in a small way, through the videos, the freedom that we experience. Atb
awesome videos sir!the preservation of this type of knowledge is so important, and you are a beautiful human for sharing this with all

Cheers Lonnie I enjoy watching these videos, in my eyes proper mountain man style and weather and scenery we don't often get here in ol Blighty, unless we venture into Scotland, breakfast looked very nice indeed, thanks, atb, Paul.
+Neanderthal 62 Thank you Paul for the kind words. Cheers to you and Atb to you and yours as well.
Great vid Lonnie. I've learned a lot. love the shelter you built as well.
You should do a video of you playing your flute with the fire crackling. That would be awesome to listen to as you go to sleep.
The flute part
